I recently graduated from the Citizen's Academy put on by the Carson City Sherriff's Office. We…read moreme6t every Wednesday evening from 6-9 PM for 10 weeks. This very informative Academy offered me the opportunity to learn about the various services offered and to observe a large array of situations that Officers encountered daily. Here's some of the services that I had the privilege to learn more: - Detention Center Tour (Learned the difference between Jail and Prison) - Coroner's Office - Detectives Division - Lab & Vault Units - SWAT - Search and Rescue (Volunteer) - AERO Squadron (Volunteer) - Mental Health (MOST) - Special Enforcement - Gangs Unit - Dispatch Center - School Resource Officer (SRO) - Volunteer Organization (VIPS) - Traffic - K-9 Unit - Patrol - Active Shooter/Post IHOP Education I very much appreciated the time that Sherriff Ken Furlong shared with us at the beginning of each session, and professional knowledge that his officers and staff shared with us during all their presentations. It was eye opening at times to realize how much goes on in greater Carson City and how big (Lake to Desert) this Country really is. Special thanks and gratitude to Colleen Schiller for coordinating all of this. My Wife Gayle used to run the Citizen Academy of the City of Walnut Creek and believe me, putting on programs like this are a LOT of much appreciated work. Thank You. Notes: 1. I hope that I'm never on the "other side" of any of these fine officers. I do try to convince my Wife that I'm a "Bad Boy", but she's not buying it. 2. Douglas County (where I live in Genoa) has a similar Citizen's Academy program. Please contact their Sherriff's Office for additional details. 3. The Carson City Sheriff's Office does a pretty good job communicating various crime issues and requesting information. I read about things like this daily via my newspaper subscription through the Nevada Appeal and the Record Currier. Douglas, Lyon, and Story Counties too. 4. Citizen's Academy presentations may or may not sometimes be biased towards the positive. I personally thought I received balanced presentations and was pleased that the officers seemed to want to be there, were straightforward about their duties, and were eager to answer questions. 5. If I were to suggest any improvements, maybe bring some Fire Department presentations into the mix would have rounded out my "uniformed services" knowledge. 6. Another goal of this Citizen's Academy is to recruit volunteers for various programs. There's some paperwork involved (which I have in hand), and I'm sure that when I do raise my hand, any volunteer efforts on my part will be well appreciated.

From a somewhat difficult circumstance, they made certain that I was informed, although they were not there for " my protection" per se, I felt that I was treated well and with a great deal of respect. They extend courtesy, professionalism, and work diligently to preserve the dignity of the in- custody individuals, and treat them with a great deal of respect as well. They are challenged daily I am certain, but continue to do their difficult jobs to meet the needs of our community very well. The Deputies in the jail are super- all of them. Thank you for all that you do. Of the names I recall, I would like to personally thank Deputy Carter, Deputy Oropeza, Deputy Garcia, and I am certain there were many more. From my family to you all- a warm and heartfelt thank you to you all!! Katherine

I have no problems with the CHP or any sheriff/police department as I am American and love my…read morecountry. Although, I recently received a ticket for "speeding" a few weeks ago by CHP officer Steven Strobel in Truckee, California. Strobel was hands down the worst officer I have ever dealt with. I have no idea if he was having a bad day, but he WRONGFULLY towed my car in the middle of nowhere due to the fact that "he didn't have enough time." I was on my way to a convention in Tahoe/Reno for the weekend and my car was being worked on, so I had to borrow my Father's Lexus. Since it's not my car, I didn't have the insurance or new registration or any information on the car for that matter, as my Dad keeps all of his info on his phone. When I was pulled over, he instantly took my keys and explained the issue. I told him the scenario and he kept rushing me to get information needed( which I understand) and I was making numerous phone calls to receive that information. My father wasn't answering and Strobel was getting super impatient with me. He started getting irritated and repeatedly called me a liar and intending I lied about registration and insurance. He told me to get out of my car with all my luggage as my car was being towed and I can pick it up. I told him I was four hours away from home and he told me to take a train. I was in the middle of nowhere and was left stranded. Because of that I had to buy $100 uber to the nearest civilization, and buy a hotel to wait 2 days to get my car out on monday morning for a whopping $800!! This situation was completely unfair and unlawful. I will be pursuing this case deeper. Also, after research I learned that this officer is from southern california. Keep the Left out of the CHP. Strobel is a joke.

Update: About a week ago a pedestrian setting up reflective…read moresafety triangles at the scene of an accident was run over and killed by a Truckee CHP. This is very unfortunate. I don't blame the officer involved as this event is likely the result of an office who's leadership is unwilling to accept that their officers may not be perfect and address minor safety and other issues before someone ends up dead. From 2012: I recently tried to ask a Sergeant Andy Mayo at the Truckee CHP about a parking ticket that I received. It was an interesting ticket because it was for two things: not having updated tags, and being parked in a no parking zone, neither of which appeared to be violated in any way (a passing by Placer County Sheriff looked at the ticket and also could not figure out why we were ticketed). However, I know that officers are human (and make mistakes), so I wanted to talk to somebody at the office about the incident. This is where it all went downhill. I could not have a reasonable conversation with Sergeant Mayo. He refused to explain to me anything about the ticket, he refused to look at the car which clearly had updated tags, and he refused to look at the many pictures that I had taken showing that the vehicle was in fact not parked in a no parking zone. The only thing that this Sergeant would say was that he refused to question the integrity of his officer, and accused me of being drunk (I was not). I was treated like a piece of trash. Mayo also told me I couldn't record our conversation (when I was getting a bit frustrated). I was later told by another officer in the department that I should be allowed to record as I was on public property. This whole situation bothers me because I see law enforcement as agencies which are supposed to "protect and serve", and it seems as though Sergeant Mayo has a vastly different view on what "protecting and serving" entails. I don't mind getting a ticket, I do deserve to be treated with respect. I want to have faith in our law enforcement in California, but when officers like Mayo are in leadership roles it is hard keep faith.

They have tried to lure us to move here, but we keep reminding them we don't like snow. Accommodations are quite expensive-- especially during the high season, which is actually summer, not winter. But don't expect a deal in winter either. There is a lot to do in Truckee. For those who like mountain biking or hiking, there are tons of trails around. Naturally, there are several world-class ski resorts nearby as well. Expect to pay a lot. Truckee is one of the most beautiful places in Northern California. There's a good reason that people flock here. One of my favorite places to visit in town is the Fifty-Fifty" brewery. It is very close to Sierra Bible Church. On Sunday mornings you can get your spiritual enlightenment, and then follow it up with some liquid refreshment. If you go to the second service, the brewery will open about the time the church lets out. I'm not sure if they coordinated those times or not, but it works out well, at least for me. Truckee has so much snow, they have developed a world-class system of maintaining the roads. They actually teach other cities how to do it. There is an excellent State Park based upon the Infamous Donner party history. It's well worth taking the tour there. Now that our kids own a house here, we can avoid paying the expensive hotel bills. But I'm afraid our kids might make us shovel snow.

Donner Lake was literally LIT up last night, with the MOST spectacular fireworks & finale show of all time! I can honestly write this, as I've had plenty of experiences with 4th of July firework shows, from around California (ie: numerous Bay Area locations, San Francisco Bay, North & South Lake Tahoe, boating at the Delta-fireworks put on by the Hilton Family), but none to date, have come even close to comparison, of the fireworks put on by the, Town of Truckee-Truckee Donner Recreation & Parks Dept, year after year. Because I can't personally thank each person, I'd like to take this opportunity to express my & my family's gratitude to EVERYONE; from the Town of Truckee, Town of Truckee personnel & road crew, Truckee Donner Rec & Parks Dept, Truckee Police Dept, Truckee Fire Dept, Truckee Hwy Patrol & to all those that volunteered, to make this day a special one. Thank you, for your time, patience & all of the hard work that was contributed & performed by every single person involved in making this years, 4th of July celebration at Donner Lake, amazing, fun & safe!
