Very tasting, fun location! Just be careful as the food can get spicy really fast if you are not used to it. I ordered medium heat... but it tasted great!

King Crab and a pound of shrimp and more!!

Great food, great time, and great waitress! King Crab was perfect, we loved shrimp and the garlic butter seasoning ... and even the corn was good.

The seafood bread is so delicious! The seafood boil was very good too! The crab legs were a good size, and plenty of shrimp, sausage, potatoes, corn, and eggs. We ordered the #10 combo for $139. It fed 4 adults and some kids. Our server did a great job with our party of 11. It was a family friendly restaurant for sure. All around and choice.

#4 Cajun with a side of Sam's Special.

My sister and nieces were in town for the holidays, the night before they flew back home we decided to have one last family dinner. There was 6 of us. My mother, sister, 2 nieces, one of my sons, and myself. Since we all liked Seafood we thought we would try Storming Crab. We went mid-week so it wasn't busy and where greeted promptly. They quickly sat us and our server went over our options as none of us have ever been there. We decided that the 6 of us could get by with a Dinner combo #2 and #4. They list it as feeding 2-3 people, and depending on appetite of the diners, that seems fairly accurate. None of us went home hungry. We also had an order of the seafood bread... which was fantastic. Do recommend getting it if it doesn't come with your meal. For flavoring we chose the Cajun on the #4 and the Old Bay butter on the #2, both were really good, but the table favorite was the Old Bay butter. You have to get the same seasoning per combo. Because of the way they cook/season the combos they can't do different flavors per combo. However they will give you a side of a different one if asked, and I wanted to try to Sam's Special. It had a good flavor, but I didn't think it was all that hot/spicy. Our server was very nice. She even offered to take a group photo of us. We were grateful for that as my selfie skills are seriously lacking... or so the twenty somethings told me. She was very nice and informative, answered our questions and made sure we were taken care of the entire time we were there. The interior is done up with a pier/dock theme with nets, traps, and fake sea creatures strung around the place. It was also heavily written on. Part of their shtick is that they give you markers so you can write your name or draw something on the walls or any surface you can reach. My son and nieces did exactly that... Not really my style so I just watched. Overall our experience was good. The food was decent, it is pricey, but so is seafood in most places. If you get cheap seafood, you're probably going to regret it. The food might not have been the best seafood I've had, but we are in the heart of the Midwest not a coastal town, but for Rockford, it might actually be the best option that you have.

I tried Storming Crab on a whim just because I was passing by and saw the sign, have to say, I have to say I was well pleased with pleasant environment, to the excellent service to the absolute best food I had at any seafood establishment in a long while (certainly coming back), Lady was my server and was nothing less than fantastic, and anyone that has read any of my reviews knows I don't pull no punches, and if the food is crap, I go for the jugular, calling things as I see them, because some have had the unmitigated gall to put some certified garbage in front of this Eater, Storming Crab gets props (+10) on all levels, keeping it , Storming Crab gets 10/10 for delivering on excellence in food service, thats what I got on this night, I know Ive had an enjoyable meal when I get full and satisfied b4 I finish. So if ya reading this, my question is why you still reading, get on over yonder, grab yerself one o dem menus and get after some o dat finger licking grub "ya heard", and if the other items in the menu are as good as what I had, Im sure you will be "well pleased" too.

Storming Crab earned a special spot on my profile. General comments: No issues with the staff. They were pretty efficient and friendly Pros: +Very vast menu. Plenty of options, many of which are done through combinationsof main course and side items. For example a diner could select 2 entree items 2 sides, and a sauce. +I had white clams, sausage and veggies. I enjoyed the muscles, but the sausage wasn't as warm as I wanted it to be. Veggies were good however +Mom had the scallops, and they were up to par. No complaints +Dad had black muscles, which were good, but what really impressed me was his gumbo. I like gumbo a lot and this was one of the best things on the visit. It had a real kick, which is also a plus if you like spice. +Most of their dishes and sauces seem to have a fair amount of spiciness on some level. +Finally I just had to have cajun rice. I was pleased with the dish Cons: -This place is one of the more expensive option one would find. There's nothing economical about it, but that is because fresh seafood is inherently expensive -Speaking of fresh... dishes like this is tough to do. The bigger the party, the more likely an entree may be more cold than it should be. May be safer to do smaller groups -These cons may be tied to the fact the menu is so vast, that price changes will be very frequent and items subject to regular alterations Bottom Line: If service and food consistency is off at all, this place is a 3 star. If service is playing at a higher level, it can be at least a 4 star, hence the rating. Glad its in the area, and I want to give it more tries

    raw oysters
    Marie K.

I went here with my family to celebrate mother's day since my brother recommended the place. We ordered 1/2 dozen raw oysters , 1/2 dozen baked oysters with garlic old bay butter seasoning, lobster boil, and the soft shell crab basket. My mom enjoyed the raw oysters and the baked were really good especially with lemon. The soft shell basket my brother ordered had 2 huge crabs bigger than my palm, and it was really good. Compared to other restaurants in the northwest suburbs the price was really reasonable and it was only about $90 for the whole thing. The lobster we ordered was a whole lobster with the shell and all ( kinda hard to see in the picture), and I wasn't sure how to eat it at first. We asked the waitress and just pried it apart, and the lobster was really tasty. This is my new Rockford favorite place! You should dress casual since the boil seafood can get a little messy even with an apron they give you. (They give you gloves and apron if you order the boil) Also has doordash and other delivery options.

12 Sea Scallops with, Red Potatoes and corn. The side salad is enormous and delicious.

My husband and I were so delighted during our first experience @ Storming Crab!! What a wonderful new and refreshing way to do seafood!! Everything is prepared in a Louisiana style manner!! You get to choose how spicy or mild you like your food prepared!! The staff was so friendly and helpful in helping us enjoy our time there!! We were there to celebrate my husband's Birthday, and got to experience "signing the walls" with whatever we wanted to share!! It was so fun to be able to read what other people had to say!! We DEFINITELY recommend this awesome restaurant with family and friends. They are second to none for their quality and originality!!! Sincerely, Randy & Kathy Fritz

Dear Council Oak Management,…read more My husband and I dined at Council Oak last night to celebrate three very special occasions: my retirement, my birthday, and his birthday. This was our fifth or sixth visit, and we've always enjoyed dining with you, which makes this experience even more disappointing. Our evening started off very well. The hostess asked if we were celebrating anything special, and we shared our celebrations. When our server, Amy, introduced herself, she also acknowledged my retirement and our birthdays and engaged us in a friendly conversation about our plans. Because your staff initiated these conversations, we naturally assumed there might be a small celebratory gesture at the end of the meal, as is customary at many fine dining restaurants. We weren't looking for anything extravagant, just a simple acknowledgment such as a small dessert or cookie. Instead, nothing was offered. In hindsight, it felt unnecessary to ask about our special occasions if there was no intention of recognizing them. The service also became inconsistent throughout the evening. Amy disappeared for a significant portion of our meal, and another gentleman stepped in to assist us before Amy returned and apologized. While we appreciated the apology, the overall pace of the meal was extremely slow. We arrived at five o'clock, were among the first guests seated, and did not leave until approximately seven forty-five. There were only two of us, yet we waited about forty-five minutes for our entrées, making the dinner far longer than it should have been. We have always enjoyed Council Oak, which is why this visit was so disappointing. I wanted to share this feedback because I hope future guests celebrating important milestones have a better experience than we did. Thank you for taking the time to read my comments. Sincerely, Sue O

I'd like preface: 1. Atmosphere is great…read more 2. Staff was very nice. 3. The food that we ate, tasted good. 4. Sat at the bar, drinks and bar staff were nice. 5. We DID ultimately receive a 50% discount on our plate, which I am acknowledging was gracious and I am thankful for. 6. I grew up eating fish, not only at home but in restaurants/bars. I am giving this restaurant a three star review however. We ordered the walleye fish. The two bites I was able to take, definitely tasted good. However, in both bites, I was picking out several bones. Upon inspecting, we found over another dozen bones in the walleye. Bones happen in fish sometimes, but this was an astronomical amount that made it impossible to enjoy the fish or even eat it comfortably. We quietly just told the bartender about the bones and just asked if we could have a portion of the fish discounted because we ate everything else. Which tasted great. We absolutely were willing to pay for everyone else, didn't want a discount on the entire bill. Just a little something for the fish. She talked to her manager and then the manager came out. Now IF the manager had just apologized and offered a discount, this would've been a 4.5/5 review. However, the manager proceeded to give us a lecture about walleye. She insinuated that we never ate walleye before; she said people who don't eat walleye, don't understand that there unfortunately are a lot of bones. And that there was nothing they could do about it. Keep in mind both the bartender as well as the manager acknowledged that the walleye gets several complaints because of the amount of bones. (that sounds like a supplier problem, and should probably be addressed). My family used to own a restaurant in a campground, we served a walleye, we did not have issues with bones. If there ever was an issue, we understood that fish could be unpredictable, and we would just offer a discount and remake the fish. (It happens) Again, I am grateful that she ultimately gave us a 50% discount on that plate. We were more than happy to pay full price for everything else. But having someone give a condescending lecture about walleye, assuming that I have never eaten walleye before was unnecessary. I didn't need the lecture. That alone made put a damper on the entire experience. The way management handles unfortunate situations can make or break it for customers.

I thought of Hoffman House, which is co-located inside a hotel. We'd eaten there years ago, and their prime rib was very good. While driving north, my wife looked it up. They changed from a white table cloth restaurant to more of a sports bar theme. Their entree list was rather anemic and just not worth the trip, except they did offer Prime Rib on Saturday. We made the trip. For starters, when you walk in there is no hostess station. The bartender told us "Sit where ever you want." so we found a booth that was clean and sat down. The seating was, well worn as in worn out. The seat covers were chipping on the chairs, and the booth seating was just dead. Our server arrived and we placed our order. My wife ordered tea, and I had a Guiness draft which was properly poured. The server brought out 4 honey buns, which are light and fluffy, sprinkled with powdered sugar, and served with a honey butter blend. They are best when they arrive - HOT. (Eat them as they arrive) It wasn't very long before the main course came out. No salad was offered. My Prime Rib was ordered and served medium rare, and the baked potato was cooked properly. I was expecting some horseradish sauce with the Prime Rib - nope. My wife did enjoy her shaved Prime Rib sandwich - the roll it was on was nice, and she opted for the premium onion strings, which were tasty. Why just okay? This was a place to go for a nice dinner with your family. It has transformed into a tired sports bar. Lots of screens, but it's kind of half-hearted with regards to the sports bar theme. Servers aren't in sports uniforms, there isn't a lot of stuff on the walls. The seating is worn out and should be either refinished or replaced. It feel like they ran out of money or concepts during the conversion, and just stopped. There is nothing compelling here to bring us back.
