Been in for the fish fry once and the buffet once! Everyone who worked there was very nice, but I will say that you're more than likely going to be waiting a decent amount of time for food so plan for that. I think both meals were good! I do think the price of the buffet was a little high. It was about $28. Food was good and you get a lot of it, but was just a little steep to me, although, all of it was homemade so maybe it is a justifiable price. Wammy's Kitchen is a good spot! This location has changed hands several times, and because of that I didn't even know these guys were here until last week. I believe they're pretty new still. They offer several sandwiches and meats on their menu, including their famous "Wammy Burger", as well as seafood options like pasta salad with shrimp, and onion rings or fries as a side. One thing to note: if you're a vegetarian, you won't find much here. The place itself looks great. They decorated it nicely, so that you have a great spot to eat indoors, or if you'd prefer, take your meal to go to eat at home or outside on the patio tables by the main entrance to the church/mall. When we ordered, a super nice lady took our order. Staff is very friendly and helpful. It did take too long to get our food, but we did have a group of 8 and I'm assuming they still need some time to work out the kinks, being new. Leave yourself some extra minutes if you're coming with a group. The turkey burger that I got was well-seasoned, those that got burgers were fans of those, and I liked how crispy they cooked the French fries! My husband and I were looking for a place to grab a bite near the area we were in. We put in restaurants near me and Wammy's popped up with 4.7 stars so we had to check it out! Well it DID NOT DISAPPOINT!! We walked in to two ladies having lunch, they immediately said "get the burger its fantastic"! We looked and oh boy was it looking big and chock full of meat, onion, pickles etc. so that's what we had! It was a huge pattie, homemade, with the perfect amount of lettuce, pickles, onions, tomatoes. My husband had the onion rings, which were perfection, in our top 3 category of onion rings! You bit it and no onion string came along! My pet peeve! The fries were nice and crispy. Then a plate of condiments came out with all kinds of sauces for dipping along with the usual mustard, ketchup and Mayo! I am dairy free so they made sure there was no butter on my bun! We had a lovely chat with the chef/owner and heard about soul food Sunday so we will be going back next week for that. It's a buffet of different foods like smothered pork chops, fried chicken, baked ham and tons of sides. The meat may change each week. There are a bunch of different items on the menu like a catfish poboy, a polish sausage but the menu is being updated so I don't recall all the others but I bet it'll be fantastic! Then another woman walked in and she makes homemade candy, sweets for the restaurant that looked awesome but we were way too full!! The restaurant is in a mall setting that is now a church, trade school and offices so don't let that deter you! Don't sleep on this hidden gem make the trek to get some crazy good food! read more

Driving through Colonial Village Parking lot we say the sign for Wammy's Kitchen. Thought we would stop on for lunch. Good food in abundance. Love the Mango Salsa with chips they brought while we waited for our food. My grilled chicken sandwich was huge and the fries were crisp and tasty. My husband got the catfish po-boy and it was a large and filling sandwich. He loved the French fries. Recommend for a great lunch. read more

I just moved here from Chicago. I'm looking for a soul food restaurant couldn't find one just so happened to see this woman in Sam's Club with a cart full of disposable pans. I asked her did she cook and she said yes I have a restaurant name Wammy's kitchen tell her I will see her the next day I don't eat fish but the buffalo fish was 10 out of 10 then they told me about soul food Sunday I got the pork chop with macaroni, yams, chicken, and a side of lava beans when I tell you, this is the best food I've had since my grandmother passed away the beans remind me of hers the pork chops as well. The macaroni is perfect. The yams is perfect. The chicken is perfect. Everything is perfect. It should be called wammy perfect kitchen. I just recently caught wind of this place and couldn't wait to try it. On Sunday's they are open 1:30-5 pm, and I made that fit into our lunch plans. Boy am I glad I did. People who have told me about Wammy's used terms like "soul food". But it is much more than that. It reminds me of the kind of food we ate at my grandmother's house after church. Comfort food for sure but more than that too. Comfort food with attitude. On Sundays, it very much like a meat and three, except, wait for it, it's a two meat and four! I enjoyed pot roast and baked ham. The pot roast was supremely prepared. Somehow the roast was so well cooked you didn't teeth to chew it. But somehow the carrots weren't mushy. They incorporated peaches and pear into the ham, being careful to only complement the ham, not overpower or detract from it. My four sides were Mac and cheese, collard greens with cabbage, pinto beans and black eyed peas. It was served with a square of cornbread. All four were home runs. The collards with cabbage was an artist's rendition of my favorite green. Not bitter at all and the cabbage added some nice consistency to every bite. The black eyed peas had a savory smoke taste, no doubt using a well smoked piece of pork. Pinto beans were just as tasty albeit prepared without the added smoke flavor. And the mac and cheese reminds me of my favorite dine out mac and cheese at Michael Jordan's old restaurant in Chicago that came from his (ex) wife Juanita's grandmother's recipe. That's how important mac and cheese is to me that I remember all that! [Disclaimer- my wife's Mac and cheese is the best in the world]. The homemade raspberry tea was delicious The dessert offerings were caramel cake, red velvet cake and pound cake. All very good. Gail makes some chocolates that you can order to go that rival the best chocolatiers in the Midwest (her business is called AbiGail's Delight). The owner and her staff make you feel welcome serving beautiful food in a friendly and welcoming atmosphere. I have to go back during the week now to try the Wammy Burger that I keep hearing about. I highly recommend this place to anyone that enjoys great food. read more

I was at Wammy's Kitchen today in Rockford, IL. I was so excited to finally be able to support someone I grew up with and personally knew of her culinary skills. The food at this restaurant was awesome. I had the chicken wings and cheeseburger. The sizes of the entrees were large, taste was delectable, and customer service was very good. Other persons in our party had catfish, poor boy, Wammy's Signature burger, and polish sausage. Everyone was praising the food! I appreciated that the chef came out to talk with the customers and thank them for coming to the restaurant. I will definitely return to the restaurant and share the great experience with others.
