This is a "house with a tower" style lighthouse rather than the usual conical tower you'd see at many others. It is open for tours but I was here early on Sunday morning and the staff was not here yet. Built in 1849 and only 40 feet high, it has undergone extensive renovations recently but it very endangered by erosion. The city and county and state have installed sandbags and such to try to keep as much of the land as possible but I don't know that it's working. Keep it up, y'all. The last bit of the road to East Point is sand and the area around the lighthouse was pretty dense with sand fleas and other tiny bugs. I did not spend too much time here today. It reads, "From September 19 to 24 1910, about 45 years after the last shot of the Civil War was fired, the 44th National Grand Army of the Republic (G.A.R.) Encampment (convention) was held in Atlantic City. The G.A.R., a Union (Northern) Civil War veteran's organization, had in attendance over 18,000 of its 214,000 members arriving from across the nation, many still suffering from wounds inflicted decades before in the War Between the States. The days of the gathering were marked by parades, and meetings for the Encampment were held at Steel, Million Dollar, Steeplechase, and Young's Ocean piers. Among the notable Civil War veterans in attendance were Major General Daniel E. Sickles, Lt. General Nelson A. Miles, and Johnny Clem, the famous "Drummer Boy of Chickamauga."" The sand wasn't too hot. There isn't any shade so make sure you bring your own! Reapply sunscreen again and again! Water felt clean we saw dolphins in the distance, bird nests and even whale bones from a recently buried whale! So many memories on this beach from when we were young and so many new ones with a new generation of our family to enjoy it for the first time.

You can get access to a bigger selection of ebooks if you sign up your library card with the libby app. For those that are here for the summer only and wondering how to get a card, you can bring in a copy of your tax record or I believe a utility bill to apply for a card. This really is a nice library. On the second floor there is a deck overlooking the wetlands and bay which would be a great spot to read and enjoy a cup of coffee. The sea isle city historical museum is also located within the library. Now, the main thing that gets this library 5 stars is the kid's programming. We came here all summer and the amount of programs they have for kids is awesome. The library in my hometown still refuses to do any in person indoor kids programming because of Covid and never brought back out the kid toys. My daughter is only 3 so she has never been able to enjoy our local library (Haverford Township) for basically her entire life. So, the SIC library has been a breath of fresh air this summer. The children's librarian who does story time is great along with all the other the library workers. Thank you to those who run this library for providing great educational activities! And for other parents who may be concerned, the programs for young kids here seems to be developmentally appropriate and not "woke"!

It connects Atlantic City's "Downbeach" neighborhood to the mainland by traversing wetlands and a bay. Three fixed spans and one double-leaf bridge make up the causeway. The bridge was built in 1932 and collected tolls until it was forced to close because of financial difficulties. It was reopened in 1939 as the Margate Bridge Company, which ran it until 1964. The Margate Bridge stock was put up for sale at that time in Federal Court. The Margate Bridge was purchased by the Capaldi and Hansen families, who made the highest offer. In the State of New Jersey, there are just three privately owned toll bridges. The toll to cross the bridge is $2.25. Fire Control Tower No. 23 is one of a series of towers with observation decks that was used to triangulate the position of enemy ships and direct the artillery fire from nearby coastal batteries. This tower is all that remains in NJ and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Leashed dogs are allowed to explore the property and you can learn about the history through signage dotted along the path. There is also a Veterans Memorial eternal flame sculpture. Dogs are not allowed inside the building, but it is still an impressive stop on your visit.

This was the first opportunity to learn about them, and I of course took it! These were built during WW II as part of the Fort Myers Delaware Bay defense system. They were observation posts used to report enemy ship activity, directing nearby artillery. They were not in service for long as advances in technology made them obsolete. This is one of two that have been restored & are open to the public- the other is at Cape Henlopen State Park in Delaware. I had an interesting chat with a volunteer, who told me that people often think these were used for spotting fires, which was never their purpose. He told me you can go inside and climb stairs to the 6th level & look out the slotted view. I elected not to as I've recently fractured my ankle & I didn't think my physical therapist would be happy with me climbing all those stairs just yet. I'm looking forward to a return visit once my rehab is complete. Note: They have reduced hours in the off season (October to April).
