Try the wine slush! Oh ya, you heard that right; they mix their wine w/ a drink mix, unassuming greatness. Priced well, a wine tasting of 5 plus the glass for $5. Also, depending on what u try, you get food items (a chocolate, cookie, etc...) or a cold try, then it served hot. They offer dry, semi-sweet, sweet and a port type varieties. Most of the bottles were around $14, together with the tasting it's less than $20. Our pourer was great too, she used to be a school teacher, and her love of teaching continues here with slightly tipsy adults. Good grounds to relax on after--country solitude. read more

We LOVE Strawbale Winery. Our family goes there to relax almost every Thursday during the summer months when they have their Summer Porch Series. We bring our lawn chairs, a blanket and our daughter (who is well under the drinking age!) to enjoy the family atmosphere at the 100+ year old farm. My husband and I drink the winaritas or buy a bottle of their Kay Gray to share. Our daughter drinks soft drinks sold for just $1 a can. The music is usually a local acoustic individual or group - it's lovely background music for conversation among friends and the musicians play mostly folk, country and blues with some contemporary music mixed in for good measure. Every Thursday they feature a couple different food vendors. You can almost always find wood roasted pizzas cooking $10 range) and you can also choose from a weekly food vendor who serves pork sandwiches, tacos and burritos, sub sandwiches or a local favorite, Monkey Balls. (These are meat balls, wrapped in cheese, wrapped in bread and deep fat fried. Delicious!) ($5-$7 range) The winery is a working farm in addition to having the tasting room, gift shop and events. Don't be surprised if a chicken or winery kitten come to visit during the evening. My daughter loves feeding the chickens with the little feed bags given each child when they arrive. You'll find the owners, Don and Susie, out meeting guests on these lovely summer nights. My daughter looks for them every Thursday, because they often have a bag of ice cream treats to hand out to the youngsters at the farm. Strawbale Winery comes with my highest recommendation, whether you're a visitor or a local. read more

One of my favorite wineries I've had the pleasure of going to across the country. Really friendly atmosphere where you can sit down, chat with the owners and sample various wines. When I was there the owner let us try some homemade jalapeno chocolate(yum!). Speaking of which I highly recommend the jalapeno wine! read more

What a great experience it was to visit Strawbale winery. I didn't know that there were any vineyards in South Dakota until we found it on yelp. The tasting room was very rustic and made with all sustainable materials. The staff at the winery also gets a big 5 stars. They were all very friendly, helpful, and knowledgable about the wines that they produce as well as the locally produced products that they had in their tasting room. This is agritourism at its best. read more

Saw this on the news (KELO) when we were on vacation in the area in August as they called the place "Napa Valley of the Midwest". We showed up for one of their Thursday "Summer Porch Series". We were greeted in the drive by a young woman asking for a taste of their wine from a community cup. Not real keen on that idea for public health reasons. But anyway we went inside for a tasting and the festivities. We entered the tasting room and we were greeted with a man singing "Do you know where the banjo came from". As well as the families chickens running around at our feet and a sign nearby that read "The chickens are members of our family. Please treat them as such...." The tasting room itself is very small as the average bedroom and people packed in like sardines. We waited around for over half an hour and could not get a taste or even purchase a glass unless we were willing to drink from the community cup. All the wile the man singing was playing the same song over and over. It got even better as outside a fast food vending truck was selling "Monkey Balls.". I'm no wine snob but I have been to many wineries to say that this place is a disaster and by all means is no standard for South Dakota wine makers who bust their backs everyday to do what they do. I hope no visitors take the impression that this represents South Dakota's idea of the Napa Valley of the Midwest. Please see any other winery first and I mean any. If you still insist on going, consider yourself warned. It was horrible. Seeing as how someone apparently had this post removed and seemed to clarify what were in the monkey balls and the other topics I mentioned I would assume you are either friends or family with the owners and share in the same delusion. Don't mark my review as inappropriate because you don't agree with it.. Take it as feedback on what to improve or possibly change. Stick you nose in the air at customers and don't be surprised if one day your business is struggling. read more
