We booked a private self-defense class with Jay at Streetwise Defense for a group of 8 women -- and WOW, it was incredible! Jay created such a supportive and empowering environment, teaching us practical, real-life techniques to get out of sticky situations. He walked us through scenarios we could actually find ourselves in and made sure we felt confident practicing each move. You can tell he really knows his stuff -- and cares deeply about helping others feel prepared and protected. Not only did we walk away with new skills and a fresh sense of confidence, but we also had an absolute blast. Jay kept things engaging, high-energy, and even fun while still driving home just how important this kind of training is. Can't recommend Jay and Streetwise Defense enough -- whether you're looking to build confidence, learn how to protect yourself, or just want to do something meaningful with your group. This class was a game-changer!

We went through some nitty gritty moves as far as strikes and escapes from common holds. No fancy footwork, just real-world applications. We got to practice with a real-life person pretending to attack us, and that is invaluable, especially if you've never experienced what it's actually like to be grabbed. A single self defense class isn't going to make anybody a pro. Beginners (including myself) will still feel a bit awkward and befuddled with what we learned. And without repetition and lots of practice, we'll likely forget some of the moves. But at the very core of the principals taught by Michelle is that we women need to remember to use our voice when we feel threatened. So many of us are too timid to be loud, we don't want to make a scene, we're apologetic. Well, we get a lot of practice in this seminar on speaking out! And that in itself is very empowering. I hope Michelle offers follow-up classes. Her seminar isn't just about learning the moves, it's about learning to be confident in our space. And that's something I want to continue practicing.

I was not very well versed in all things BJJ at the time so I will share my experience accordingly. First things first, I didn't understand the big differences between Gi and no-Gi BJJ. It is a critical question you need to ask yourself what you prefer before getting started. Before the move, the gym I practiced at was using Gi. Honestly, I think the Gi sucks! My hands would get hurt getting stuck in grips, extra rashes, and damage to my ears and face. Everyone was taped. It is just more brutal on the body IMO. As an 'old man' for this sport longevity was one of my deciding factors. That being said, THIS gym is no-Gi which I would recommend over Gi. The other part I will mention is about this gym itself. The support and comradery of the coach (which draws the quality of students) and the students are extraordinary. Coach is VERY hands-on, teaches most of the classes and even does roll with his students on occasion. Ending note...everything is clean, sanitary, and professional. No bullshit BJJ gym, get in here and give it a try (for yourself or kids)!

My motto: "Being in shape requires one thing: hard work. And working hard requires no talent" About 4 weeks ago I attended my first class. I was feeling nervous. I had heard crossfit is a hardcore fitness challenge. I walked in with butterflies in my stomach not knowing what to expect. I was first greeted by Meg which runs the gym and who also is a certified crossfit trainer & a has a black belt in Kempo Karate. I still did not know what to expect, and was feeling intimidated by the "WOD" aka work out of the day. I had never done a overhead, power push, jerk before. (scared) Once the class was instructed what we had to do, I was guided by Meg on body mechanics and BAM!! I fell into the swing of it. From my first day experience, it has me coming back four times a week. Everybody is very friendly and welcoming. I remember someone telling me "we all been in your place before", and it only gets better =) Everyday is a new work out so never a dull moment. ***Shouts out to Meg, Alex, Jonathan, Vanessa, and Manolo they all have the drive to provide direction, supervision, encourage, dedication, and motivation enabling you to work safely at your full potential.

What I really liked about this gym was the variety of classes they offer. You can try different types of workouts and figure out what you enjoy without having to commit right away. They also let you borrow gloves and other equipment for free during the trial classes, which I thought was a really nice touch. I ended up trying the HIIT and DEKA classes, which were my favorites, and most of the coaches I had were really great. Unfortunately, my experience with one of the kickboxing classes wasn't as good. I specifically asked multiple times beforehand if it was okay that I was a complete beginner, and I was told that it was totally fine. However, when I showed up, pretty much everyone else already knew what they were doing, so I naturally felt a little intimidated. I also wasn't given much guidance despite being a first-timer. What really bothered me was that the coach called me "silly" when I wasn't able to follow the instructions. I understand that a fast-paced class can be challenging for beginners, but I didn't think making fun of someone who was trying something for the first time was appropriate, and it definitely put a damper on the experience. One other thing I wish they had was a proper locker room or changing area. They have gender-neutral bathrooms, but they didn't feel clean or comfortable enough to change clothes in, especially if you're coming straight from work. I really liked the variety of classes and the generous trial period, and most of my experiences with the coaches were positive. I just wish the beginner experience was a little more welcoming and that they had a better space for changing.

He brings the right tools to train on self-defense and understands how to communicate to the student - including providing relevant stories and examples to make it relatable. Every young woman should go through a course like this: - Situational awareness: How to avoid being in a bad situation (when you are alone, when you are with a male 'friend' who has different intentions, or when you are with friends at 'gatherings' with 'beverages'). - Self-defense: How to defend yourself from an 'friendly' who is aggressive or a true aggressor (how to get out of 'uncomfortable' situations, how to get out of common physical 'holds', and how to fight back). I highly recommend and we will be back for a refresher before my daughter goes off to college.
