As parents who value strong discipline and clear authority, we still believe that how children are corrected matters deeply. What concerned us wasn't firmness--but a pattern of fear-based discipline that doesn't reflect the heart of Christ. We discovered that the school still practices corporal punishment through eighth grade, and from several conversations, it's sad to observe a heavy emphasis on outward obedience and strict control. While structure and accountability are important, we believe Christian education should point children toward internal transformation, not just a type of performance-based behavioral compliance. In our view, this school emphasizes rules over relationship, control over discipleship, and punishment over restoration. That may produce order, but it does not create disciples. Jesus called children to come to Him--not when they had it all together, but because they were already worthy of His presence. Ultimately, we chose to look beyond surface-level order and asked whether the environment at Strickland truly reflects the grace and truth of Christ. I was at this school for about a year and a half, and honestly i wish i'd never been there at all. The bullying that went on was terrible. I was bullied very obviously and only two teachers (mr. and mrs. hill) tried to help me. and yes i will be calling our teachers for their actions. it's about time someone did something about this atrocious school. I was held back because of math and language being advanced but ended up doing 5th grade math instead of 6th grade math because of the workload. it was so bad. i'd be up late every single night doing only math while knowing i still had two or three other subjects to complete that same night. there were many nights i stressed about homework to the point of crying or not wanting to go. now for one good thing, mrs. hill was the sweetest teacher. she always checked on me and would often chat with me after school because she was one of the teachers that waited outside with everyone at pick up time. i was definitely sad when she retired. little did i know the horrors that would lead to. the next year was 7th grade and it was bad. mrs. windsor is by far one of THE WORST teachers i've had and i'm about to be a senior. (honestly the majority of the teachers at this school were bad..) this woman got mad at me for things outside my control. i have what probably is selective mutism in which i am PHYSICALLY UNABLE to say/sing anything out loud with a group (also can't sing around anyone or alone). she consistently got mad at me when i didn't do things "right" despite me being unable. she also got mad at me for needing to use the restroom. i would drink water throughout the day as most would, and so of course i'd have to pee. well, she'd always be mad but i never ever went while she was teaching. i always went on my time. now for the worst incidents with this teacher.. she caused me to cry several times per week during the one semester of 7th grade. by far, the worst thing she did was to get me suspended. now, i never truly studied for our spelling/vocab tests but i would review the vocab words by writing them several times on a piece of paper. i always wrote on a stack of paper because of sensory issues when writing. when it was test time, i put the "study paper" in the middle of the stack, not even visible for copying. (side note: i have NEVER cheated on a test) she originally got mad at me for not covering my test. the reason i hadn't covered it was because i didn't see a point and also having too many things in my way stressed me out too much (i'm autistic and only learned that in the last year. again, sensory issues). i had gotten away with not covering my tests many times before so no idea why this time she was so upset. she then aggressively picked up my small stack of papers which left a paper cut on my finger (wasn't as bad as i thought it would be). she was going through the stack for some reason and found my "study paper" from before the test and questioned it. i told the truth that i had used it to study and wasn't cheating. she refused to believe me. this whole incident led me to being suspended. i will also not that this school made me almost severely suicidal. i was at the point of actively planning it out. i was suspended for the monday after thanksgiving break. by the end of the week i was back in public school. mr. rigdon (the principal, at least at that time) had told my parents it was best they pull me out of the school before i got expelled (which would've been on my school record). the next day, i was in public school. if i had been expelled it would have been for no reason. oh, not to mention the paddling. every kid from age four to 8th grade. this school is ridiculous. i personally forced my mom to let me stay home in order to avoid being paddled. oh and this school has zero care about your health issues. i have asthma that was still kinda bad and no matter what, everyone was required to run excessive laps at the field during p.e. it was awful. i never felt safe at this school. please do not send your child here. it is more than borderline abusive. the trauma is NOT worth it. read more

Strickland is the best decision we could make. Our kids were accepted very early, they learned to read and do Math test in 1 minute since kindergarten. Also, are great at writing in cursive. The Teachers and principal treat you like family, I feel very safe every time I drop my kids in the morning, because I'm sure they are safe, and learning a lot. Strickland Christian School - Elementary Schools Near Me - Austin, Texas

Our child is in a K5 class at Strickland Christian School. While our child has learned a lot during the school year thus far, the School's disciplinary guidelines need a serious overhaul. The school excels in academics (I will not discredit their learning program at all), especially when the 5 year olds are learning phonics, cursive writing, mathematics and reading. However, they take corporal punishment too far for the younger kids, to the point I would consider it a bit abusive. I disagree with my 5 year old being paddled after 4 marks for things like: playing with sweater zipper, not following wall pointer, playing with pencil box, talking during prep time (i.e. before school starts), etc. Our child got severe anxiety with this school and every day, instead of starting with a clean slate, he was automatically ostracized by the teacher before he had done anything wrong and it set him up for failure from the beginning of the day. He would vomit on himself almost daily every morning before he went to school as a means to try to get out of going to school because it was so awful for him. They really have no clue when it comes to behavioral training. Kids are not robots and shouldn't be treated as such. The lower school "principal" is an old hag that should've retired about 20 years ago. Consider this your warning. read more

I decided to add to my review. I guess you could say this is not just a review but an open letter to Strickland. Strickland is exceptional in the way of academics, esp. in grammar! Probably the best school out there for learning grammar, literature, and memorization. Lessons on the gospels, Acts, and Revelation were in-depth too. The teachers were also great role models for working hard. The school was very compassionate and loving when my mother was diagnosed with stage 3 cancer in the 8th grade. I needed comfort, and they came through. But the negatives outweighed the positives. As a former student (7th-8th grade) now college bound- I left the school genuinely wondering if these teachers were sane. A couple examples: For some reason my temperature dropped one day, and I was on the literal brink of hypothermia (95.2F, lips were blue, shivering violently). Rather than helping, the principal and his wife prayed for God to heal me and then sent me back to class. I didn't feel completely safe in their care after that. -A student confided that a public school friend of hers committed suicide because of bullying, and the teacher responded believing that the friend was a bad influence because she committed suicide since suicide is a sin. Forget compassion, right? Additionally, their view of women is appalling, which I guess is the standard for most fundamentalist Christian schools though. It also took me a few extra years to unlearn Strickland reducing us girls to our body parts, that our bodies were essentially just walking sex objects in need of being covered up. My body lost its function as the vehicle through which I lived and instead became the measure of how others determined my overall worth, virtue, and respect. Teach young men the self control you perceive they lack. They're a lot stronger than you think, believe me. Strickland obsessed more over my body than any boy ever has! My friend and I had trouble dressing ourselves after Strickland; we were so used to being told what to wear. Individualism is essentially forbidden: uniforms; hairstyles, jewelry, and makeup were heavily regulated; we weren't even allowed folders of our choice to put our papers in; there was no art or music class for the upper grades. We did get to journal though and always had neat prompts. In psychology, the most effective way to teach a person or animal a new behavior is positive reinforcement, in which a positive stimulus is used to increase the behavior (quoting what I learned in college). However, Strickland uses corporal punishment regardless of age, giving students a sense that they don't have the right to their own personal space. Not to mention their method of discipline is an example of the Gambler's Paradox, a phenomenon which conforms to the widely accepted hypothesis among psychologists that corporal punishment after the age of 8 only teaches the subject to be deceptive and to try to get away with things. In the Gambler's Paradox, a gamble only needs to pay off occasionally to encourage a participant to continue gambling. In this case, if a child confessed to something for which they knew they would get punished, they still got punished. If they lied and got caught, they got punished. If they lied and didn't get caught, they didn't get punished. Thus they are positively reinforced to take a gamble and lie. Read K D's review. I'm unable to prove with evidence including names of parents or students, so you don't have to take my claim to heart, but her review wasn't the first time I had heard about (or even seen) a little child cry or get sick from anxiety before the schoolday began. Every child is different though. But if yours is very sensitive and prone to worry, this school isn't for him/her. Right after leaving the school, I became too timid to negotiate or to stand up for myself. Aside from academics, I did not develop the tools to succeed in life. I already had that drive, the organizational skills, the outside-of-the-box thinking, etc. before I moved to Texas. (I'm not saying they don't instill those things, I simply mean that I was already past those needs.) Instead, all Strickland did was worsen my perfectionist tendencies. Honestly, the principal seemed like he was on a power trip. This school was very strict, demanding, and controlling. And that is coming from one of their most well-behaved students and 8th grade salutatorian. Even yesterday, all these years later, I was sorting silverware at work and I kept looking behind my back, subconsciously expecting the principal to be there telling me I'm doing something wrong. read more

It is the best school from K4 - 8th grade. Affordable tuition and excellent quality education. All teachers are great human beings who love their class like their own kids. Parents involvement makes this place special as well. This school provides loving and caring environment to my kid with exceptional education!! They have policy of paddling kids if they don't obey even after 4 warnings. My kid never got paddling and there was a time when a boy in his class got 4 warnings and didn't get paddling because it was his first time that he got 4 warnings. Teachers here are very patient and don't just give warnings for small little things. The only time I have seen kids getting paddling is when there is something big (like hitting other kids, bullying, or breaking stuff). So I don't have problem with teachers who are disciplining my kid and making him a better person who OBEYS!! I love this school, so does my son. Its summer break already and every day he tells me that he misses his teacher and school. I would recommend this school to everyone with young kids who wants affordable high quality education! read more

While public schools are busy paying for advertising because enrollment is declining (somehow in the midst of Austin's astronomical growth?!), renaming schools, and dealing with drugs, the debate on transgender bathrooms, and other things -- Strickland Christian School is educating young boys and girls. Strickland is consistent. Strickland has educational demands that stretch the kids to work and grow their minds, while also being a caring, nurturing environment for both those who may struggle and those who may excel. Our son attended public school through 7th grade and was always near top in his class...but lacked significant fundamentals in learning and most especially in self-responsibility and work ethic. In one year at Strickland he was faced with demands he had not previously faced, but also had teachers who applied themselves to helping him through it and it has worked wonders in both grounding him and building his confidence. Camaraderie in the kids is high, as is parental involvement. Strickland is humble, yet with high standards. Hard working, doing more with less. It is also one of the most fun, friendly environments for our children. I cannot say enough about the dedication of the teachers and administrators. They truly love the work and the kids, and it shows in the way they apply themselves to challenge, grow and nurture smart, capable young citizens, both for the life in the world, and life in the service God's kingdom for the betterment of those around them. This school makes the children do wonderfully academically! Although they do paddling, it is used in a reasonable way! They use a "3 strikes your out" policy that keeps the children focused and ready to learn! Once you are about to attend the school as a new student, they test your knowledge in academics and make sure your child is fit for the school. After relocating to the area suddenly, I was tasked with finding a school that would fit 2 of my 3 children... Hands down, Strickland was the best suited & cost effective option for private school in Austin. Having children in both Elementary & Middle school grade levels, I'm speaking from a broad perspective. They are challenged in their learning and taught to have respect for themselves & others. It's what I try to teach at home & it's the environment I'd like them to be in away from home. The little ones get PLENTY of time for play & socializing from about 11:30am until pick up at 3pm (for full day). The classes in the upper grades are a lot smaller, so the kids get lots of attention to their work & study habits in preparation for High School. Every child is different as every parent is different. I have three children who attend Strickland and have been for several years. They all succeed in academics and character. I also have a daughter who is now 15 and a freshman in HS who could not make it through the program at Strickland. She could not see that Strickland was only making her a better person and trying to help her face the day to day "real life" we live in. She couldn't understand that there are consequences to every action, even with our guidance, however some things that she can appreciate now from Strickland is it made her a more responsible and better person. She attended Strickland for three years and still says yes and no ma'am to everyone she talks to, she can still recite the daily bible verses that she learned, she knows every preposition, every being verb by memory, can name all parts of speech to most sentences from the beginning to the end and the list goes on. We are so pleased that we do not have to worry about our children's education in the future. I am a working parent and being able to go to work knowing that your child is in the same care you would provide to them is the best feeling in the world. The academics are more advanced than most schools due to the teaching methods. My daughter has attended Strickland for 2 years now (Kinder and First) and my 4 year old started in the K-4 class this year, we are loving it. I love the structure Strickland provides. My children know exactly what to expect in the classroom. The teachers attempt to limit distraction with clearly defined expectations and consistency! My first grader is so smart it blows my mind! She is reading books without words, she has a Bible study time where she reads her Bible. The other night she started reading through the Psalms and began to cry. I asked her why she was crying and she said, I am so happy that I am reading my bible! That was a proud moment as a mother. My K-4 is already learning her vowel sounds and is wanting to read like her big sister so bad, and will be by the end of the school year!! The teachers and staff love Jesus and are so kind! They have expectations and they believe my children can reach those expectations. My son attended Strickland Christian School for two years (pre-K and Kindergarten). Despite doing well academically in the half day Kindergarten program at 5 years old (writing fluently in cursive, passing 1 minute speed tests for math facts and all other areas of study) he was paddled as disciplinary act for playing with his pencil and staring off at the wall during wall work. This school uses paddling as a means of discipline and readily uses it. Needless to say, we did not return for first grade. I do not recommend Strickland Christian School unless you agree with their disciplinary measure, especially for very young children. read more

My kids have been here since kinder and are now in middle school, and we absolutely love it here. My son recently got invited to participate in the Duke TIP Program as a result of his ITBS scores, and will be taking the SAT as a 7th grader! I noticed other reviewers were worried about the paddling policy. I was nervous when we began "shopping" for our kids' school, and will admit that the spanking thing was a worry for me at first (I just wasn't sure how I felt about other people spanking my child), but I remembered that my public school, back when I was in grade school, had corporal punishment and I was never paddled because I didn't want to get in trouble! In our case, my kids did go to another school for one year, (for financial reasons), but begged to come back. The teachers and staff have had so much grace and love for my kids and taught them so much more than just academics. Is it for everyone? Maybe not. Is it perfect? Of course not. However, what this school offers, in the way of character, love, support, community, and of course curriculum, is priceless. read more

Strickland school is the "hidden gem" in Christian schools in South Austin. Our children attended there for pre K and kindergarten before we moved to San Antonio last summer. The foundation they acquired at Strickland was solid in reading, cursive writing, and math facts. They were pushed to be their best in all they did while nurtured in a loving environment. It is amazing how much they learned during the two years they attended Strickland and the academic program is only Mon-Fri 8-12pm (for preK and kinder). They are able to stay after 12pm for lunch, playtime and rest time during those years. We enjoyed doing a combination of half-days and full days. We also enjoyed the focus on some of the basic tenets of the Christian faith such as the Lord's Prayer, 10 Commandments, Ps 23 and Ps 100 that were all memorized in those 2 years. They participated in a great music program and had the opportunity to perform twice each year. Our children thrived there and we miss Strickland a lot. Now being in a larger Christian school we can see the value of Strickland and that our children were very well prepared for success. The faculty and staff truly care about each individual child and family in a very no-nonsense genuine way. read more
