History

Established in 1929.

In 1929, Striffler-Hamby Mortuary - LaGrange began as Hammett and Groover Funeral Home, in LaGrange. In the mid 1950s, Hudson Maddox bought Hammett and Groover Funeral Home and changed the name to Maddox Funeral Home. Hudson Maddox operated the funeral home at 118 Church Street until his retirement in 1973, when he sold the business to Joseph E. "Gene" Page and Hudson's brother, Charles Maddox. In 1986, Gene Page sold the business to Striffler-Hamby Mortuary from Columbus, Georgia, and Maddox-Page Funeral Home was relocated to 1010 Mooty Bridge Road. In 1989, the name changed from Maddox-Page Funeral Home to Striffler-Hamby Mortuary. In 1995, Striffler-Hamby Mortuary was acquired by an affiliate of Service Corporation International. Today, we are a proud member of Dignity Memorial® network of funeral, cremation and cemetery providers.

Since the Higgins' acquired the funeral home in 2020, things have changed. It is more like it was prior to the period in which Carriage Services owned it (1998 - 2019). It's now like it was on the days of yore. During our last usage, the Higgens were more concerned for our needs (and some were a bit eccentric). The prior corporate owners were more concerned about payment. Higgins at Hunter-Allen-Myhand is more concerned about meeting the needs and well-being of the family. Pricewise, we noticed they had become more affordable since leaving corporate ownership. We basically copied a family funeral from nine years earlier. The cost dropped (and we used the same casket, vault, etc.). They are, compared to the chain funeral homes in LaGrange, a better bargain. The Higgins live in LaGrange and are a part of the community. They work to meet the needs of the families using the funeral home.
