I solicited few learning centers from Alamo to Dublin and landed with Brightfox for few reasons: 1. The approach is very strategic. Upon assessment of your child ability, they will come up with a REALISTIC plan without pushy 'marketing' tone that forces you to buy blocks of hours. They would ask your child to take the assessment twice to ensure consistency of results and serve as your child's ability/knowledge baseline. Then, they will set up a time with you and your child to review about timeline, targeted score and hours needed to review those areas that need improvement, inclusive lots of practice tests that I found extremely important to build the child confidence and comfort in taking the test. 2. Low ratio: 2:1 and sometimes even 1:1. One hour per Subject. 3. The hourly rate (in block discount) is far more reasonable than others that I inquired. 4. Brightfox Education user portal is very intuitive, easy to use/track and modern. 5. Administrative plus! There's always someone to respond ASAP (most of the time) or reasonable time, especially Ms. Heather, their office manager is SUPERB in providing response, flexibility, etc. Genuine interest in your child's success. 6. Enrolling our son in Intelos' tutoring and test prep classes has turned out to be one of the best…read moredecisions we've ever made for him. Our son has been a top straight A student all his student career until the 2nd semester in his Sophomore year. He received his first ever B+ in math. We have noticed his math grade has gradually slid down and offered to help him, but he strongly resented any type of help from us. He didn't want us to teach him or review his assignment. The resentfulness then led to countless intensive and bitter quarrels and anger on both sides. Fortunately, one of his friends recommended Lauren (the math teacher and co-founder of Intelos) to him when summer started. Just like the other 99% of the teenagers in the world, our son doesn't listen to his parents, but he listens to his friends. His friend told him Lauren was able to help her a lot in math previously. Thus, he was willing to give it a try with Lauren. He started weekly math tutoring with Lauren at the beginning of the summer. Later at the end of the summer we enrolled him in the two-week intensive ACT prep class to prepare him for September's ACT test. His math has improved tremendously just within these 2 months and he scored 35 out of 36 on September's ACT composite score. Lauren and Hugh (the other co-founder of Intelos and teacher for English/reading/writing) are not only very knowledgable but also experienced in how to work well with teenagers so that they listen, follow, and benefit from the instructions. Before Lauren and Hugh started Intelos, they were the former head teachers at the well known Elite Educational Institute. We are so happy that we didn't have to send our son to Fremont and he was able to receive all the help he needed locally in the Danville/San Ramon area. In addition, Lauren and Hugh are always very willing to work around the client's constrained schedule. My son has many activities and heavy work load from multiple AP and Honors courses. Once the school started, his available time became very limited. I thought that this would have been Deborah Bloom. Sadly, it was a very expensive mistake. During the intake, she seemed knowledgeable and asked all the right questions. We discussed a plan and it was set into action within a few days. However, there are a few areas that made me cancel my contract with her and went elsewhere for representation. First, the letter that she wrote to be dropped off at the school district was full of misinformation and I had to rewrite it. Not to mention that she charged me 130$ for the letter she wrote that was useless. Second, many emails and phone calls were left unanswered. When you are dealing with the school and have a few questions about the process, it is imperative that your hired advocate is there for you. I had a hard time getting Deborah to call me back. Third, I dealt more with her office assistant than Deborah. I'm sure her assistant is very knowledgeable, but I think that having her assistant do all the legwork made the room for the issues that I faced during an IEP meeting with the school. Lastly, during the IEP meeting, Deborah was extremely unorganized and unfamiliar with my case. She missed many important topics and asked the school district for something that was never discussed between us. I was in shock when she asked this and frustrated that she did not have notes for the issues we needed to bring up during the IEP meeting. Hence, a waste of money and everyone's time. After the meeting, I called and canceled our contract. Thank goodness I could get some of my retainer back.
