I have lived with pain for 40 years. There was always an excuse for the pains; at 13yrs old it was growing pains, at 24yrs old as a kindergarten teacher it was lower back pain. In my 30's it was hip and shoulder pains because i carried my kids around. Life literally became one big pain. It never went away it just shifted to a different area in the body. Pain existed from the moment I woke up each day and it was debilitating. I went to every medical doctor possible, had every test done and I would get the same answer each time "inflammation" and then a prescription for an anti inflammatory. Here I was 50 yrs old, feeling like I was 80 and tired of this cycle of pain. I tried alternative therapies like chiropractic, acupuncture and I even changed my diet but nothing helped me. One doctor wanted to put me on an anti depressant because he thought it was all in my head. It was NOT in my head. I was in pain and frustrated that no one could give me answers. So, I accepted that I was going to feel like this forever until one day I stumbled across an article on Structural Integration- rolfing method. It made a lot of sense so I searched the internet to see if there was anyone that practiced near me and thankfully Charles Ruland was right in my neighborhood. I called and made an appointment. I have to say I was skeptical at first because nothing has ever helped me in the past but after the first session, I requested to continue with all 10 sessions. It has been the greatest GIFT I have given myself. After only 3 sessions, I noticed significant changes in the way I felt. My body was looser, I was fluid in my movements and pain was reduced. Today was session 9 with Charles and I feel amazing. I am still in disbelief that I am feeling so well. I can now walk, dance and do yoga several times a week with out pain. I had chronic back and shoulder pain where an x-ray showed that it was due to a neck issue. Following my doctor's advice I went for physical therapy for 2 months twice a week with very little improvement. My friend told me about Charles who only had the highest regard for him as a professional and a person. I could not agree more. Not only was Charles an expert in the field of Structural Integration, he was also positive, reassuring and his calming energy always put me at ease. I always felt that he cared about my progress and me. I didn't need physical therapy, I needed to clean out the fascial adhesions my body created to protect itself. These adhesions had limited the mobility in many areas of my body. Some of the limitations were commonplace and I was completely unaware of them until Charles began to work on them. After a few sessions, I felt as if I were born again. My body felt free and organized in a most efficient way. I just completed the traditional 10 series Rolfing session with Charles and I feel connected to my body once again. The body-mind connection is there. In session 1 Charles asked me to slowly bend forward while sitting in a chair as he worked on my spine. Sounds like it would be simple enough to do. I was unable to make that connection and work with my body. By the last session I was very much connected to it and completed it without fail. The different areas were talking to each other again. This is what Structural Integration does. Through injury and trauma our body has learned to segment itself into different compartments. Charles's in-depth knowledge and ability to manipulate the fascia has allowed my body to communicate and be whole once again. My posture has been realigned and I feel like I'm ten feet tall! I worked with Charles Ruland the winter of 2016 on the 10 session program for Rolfing and structural integration body work. I entered the program with 5 year chronic lower back spasms and sciatica issues and tried many different remedies including surgery 2 years ago with no major improvement in symptoms. During and after the program, I felt my body changing and adjusting for the better and have achieved significant improvement in my overall condition since going through the program. I no longer experience spasms and my sciatica condition has diminished greatly for the first time. I feel like the body work has kick started and accelerated the healing process as each week I feel better and more stable even after the program was completed. I believe the Rolfing and SI practice to be very beneficial to anyone experiencing muscular and nerve related pain issues and would also recommend it for general health and improved physical performance. I believe in the method. It's also important to work with an experienced practitioner. I chose Charles because he had the foundational professional training combined with years of hands on experience. After the first session, you can appreciate his expertise in this field. I've had treatments from many kinds of body workers in including chiropractors, osteopaths, PTs and LMTs. The structural integration and Rolfing work performed by Charles Ruland has had the most profound effect on me than any of the other treatments. I went to Charles because I had issues in my sacral area and upper torso. After the first couple of visits, I started to feel something different and beneficial was happening to my body. By the time I had several treatments, I would leave the office and my legs and hips and entire body seemed to move so freely as if I was walking on air. I had also become used to minor interference in other areas of my body too. For example, just getting up from a chair would trigger aches and pains that I'd grown accustomed to. At the end of the prescribed course of treatment, all of that was gone. After many years of dysfunction, all my body parts seemed to be working in unison again. This work is truly transformational. Decided to try rolfing because of chronic s.i. joint pain and am very happy that I chose Charles Ruland. Contrary to what some may have read, rolfing is not a painful experience and if you are looking to make a true lasting change in your body it is worth looking into. Charles is extremely experienced and intuitive with his work. After completing the 10 series I felt a positive change in my posture and have even had people tell me I look, "taller" "thinner" or just "different". Although my issues are not entirely resolved , it has been much improved to where I was one year ago, and I plan to return to make appointments in the future. I was rolfed 25 years ago and it helped me a lot in a general way and also made me about 1/2 inch taller. Now, I have osteoarthritis in my hip and a lot of tension in my shoulders. I I've had 9 sessions, and, once again, it makes sense to me. I hope I have this right, but the chiropractor I went to dealt with my bones--my spine, and all the massage I got was for muscles, but rolfing takes care of the fascia that connects the two and makes space. Charles is highly knowledgeable and good at what he does. He is good at explaining what is going on. I do feel better in general and although my hip still hurts, my movement and walking is improved. I feel fortunate to have found such a great rolfer within walking distance of where I live, in Huntington Village. read more
