Perfect lil stop on your central Florida road trip! The roadside sign and exterior may give the illusion that the store is out of commission--but I'm pretty sure it's just the same building and sign from when they first opened in 1935! There's a little dirt parking lot out front and a small interior. Walls are filled with family photos of the Struthers bee-keeping through the decades and the shelves are lined with house-made honey products. My family has been coming here for years to buy their honey and pollen--the little honey bears make great teacher's gifts/stocking stuffers and the pollen is a 10/10 add to a smoothie. This time we tried the candies--different flavored hard shells with a generous honey center! The lemon and oranges ones are my favorite. There's no attendants inside so you pay on the honor system in the big box. There's a log book to the right where you fill out what you bought and how much you paid. Prices are very inexpensive across the board for high quality, family-owned, locally-made honey goods--you'll never find something this good for this price at a chain grocery store. I am so disappointed. we have been buying here for many years. we live in TX and my parents bring us some when they visit. the last two that we have gotten we have had to throw out. they crystalized and got hard :( you have changed how you make it i guess and it is no longer pure honey as that never goes bad or crystalized. please go back to the old way. it has always tasted so good. read more

We have passed by this place so many times and wondered about it. When I read a Yelp review awhile back, I said we are absolutely stopping the next time we are heading east on state road 60. So here we are with the rain pouring down and we are buying honey. The door is open 8 am to 8 pm. As it's been stated, everything is in the honor system. Following the people who signed in before us, we wrote our name and city down plus what we bought and the amount. We decided on a 24 ounce honey bear for $7. The smallest size was one pound for $5. So we saved 50 cents per quantity by buying the larger size. I think this is a relatively bargain price for natural, raw/wild honey. And we are hoping the honey tastes as good as it looks! You put your money in the slot as others have shown. By the way, they also have two very clean bathrooms -- should you need to use the facilities -- one for women and one for men. read more

You walk into Publix or any other grocery store and hit the produce section... Do you search for the rotten tomatoes, bruised bananas and discolored lettuce? Of course not; you go for the freshest and heartiest produce you can find. Same thing goes with honey... and there is nothing fresher than straight from the source. I happened to be traveling from Tampa to South Florida about 10 years ago (a trip I made many times). Bored of the typical Interstate 75 route I decided to take back roads and small town highways; and so glad I did because in the middle of nowheresville was Struther's Honey. A very unassuming building with exception of "HONEY" posted for every passing car to take notice (and I did). Being the adventurer I pulled in to check it out; I'm not even the biggest honey fan. I thought I'd get a lesson into the art of beekeeping. Unfortunately, I got no such education and a tour was out of the question. As a mater of fact, the grounds felt abandoned (although clean) but there was no one around. The front door to Struther's Honey was partially opened so naturally I entered to be greeted by.... no one. The door opened to a "help yourself" store and everything from small bottles of honey to gallon jugs of honey to bees wax and honey combs was done on the honor system. Basically pick what you want on the shelves, everything is marked with a price and slip your money into the little slot in the wood box in the middle of the room. The walls are littered with beekeeping information (bees, pollen, royal jelly, honey) and accompanied with photographs to back it all up... this was the closest I was getting to a tour and education; and frankly it was plenty for me. Over the past 10 years, majority of my road-trips to Tampa are accompanied with a stop here. CONFESSION: one time I came in and grabbed a few small bottles (to give to family and friends) and I "oops"; because I only had large bills... do I say "oh well" next time or do I "steal" the honey. Truthfully, anyone can walk in and walk out with anything they want and not pay. I ended up leaving a letter in the money box stating what I took and how much I owed, after all no one was around to ask first. I did mail the cash to them and shockingly received a thank you letter for the integrity. read more

We found this place years ago when we were traveling across the center of the state. I thought my fiancé was joking when he wanted to pull into a building that said "Honey" in the middle of nowhere along State Road 60. We pulled up in front of the place and there was two buildings and there were beehive boxes all over the place. At the end of the main building it looks like a porch that would be on the front of someone's home, so we went in. I thought we would learn about honey or talk with one of the people there and of course buy some, but there was no one. There was just a big wood box with a slit in the top for you to drop the money in after you pick whatever honey you want. It's so nice and refreshing to see people trust other people with a business on the honor system. After so many years coming here, I like to brag and say that I finally did meet someone from struthers when I came one day and a person was restocking the shelves. They were very nice and it just made me want to come back on my next trip. In honor system store the walls have lots of articles from newspapers and magazines about them and they also have a lot of educational information about bees and honey. For decades my Aunt had a Winter house on Eucalyptus Rd just behind the Struther's and every year she would bring me a half-gallon tin (it use to be sold in tins, like paint) and every once in a while I did visit and could bring back my own. It was by far the best honey I ever found and I miss having it. Hello my name is Katie and I'm an addict... a Struther's raw orange blossom honey addict. I am a tea drinker and have come to covet this honey in my morning tea. It pours out the texture of purée and tastes like no other honey I've ever tasted, not gamey or strong or lacking depth. My in laws introduced me to it a few years ago and bring me back a gallon (yes they love me that much) each year when they return from Florida. I have the misfortune of living in western Pennsylvania, at least 27 hours by car from my favorite unprocessed raw orange blossom honey and my heart drops a little when I'm forced to turn the gallon bottle upside down to finish it off when I won't get a new bottle for at least 6 months or more. I grew up in Polk County, born and raised a true southern gal...My grandmother had a home in Waverly, right on the outskirts of Lake Wales....she worked in the Waverly Growers Packing House sorting oranges. She was an amazing woman who taught me so much, especially how to appreciate the most important things. Like family and friends, working hard, being proud, and humble. My sister and I spent nearly every summer at her house and she always planned little adventures for us. She always kept us busy. Having said that I'm a little shocked that I've never been here before. Stepping into this little shop and looking at all the photos and newspaper clippings was really nostalgic and exciting for me. I absolutely LOVE anything homemade. I love the history of a place and being able to not only witness it but also be a part of it.
