Today I had a terrible experience with the dentist Dr.Kwok…read more Because of past experiences with tooth extraction I suggested that I was sedated for a back tooth extraction I was scheduled to have done today. Dr.Kwok insisted it wasn't necessary and convinced me using photos and examples to carry on with the surgery. As I expected, the extraction was not possible as it was impossible to put the nerve to sleep, at the end it was surmised that there must be an extra nerve somewhere and finally the operation was terminated part way through. My mouth was stitched up and I will have to see a surgeon quickly as my tooth has been ground down somewhat and is loose and very painful. I was shocked mostly at the doctor's attitude about what was happening, it was almost unbelievable. His priority is clearly not my tooth or condition, they sent me off without a surgeons appointment. Not any sign of an apology for what had happened although clearly I had warned the doctor and staff that I should be sedated. They even insisted on charging me for the cleaning they did right before the botched extraction, so I ended up paying them money for the privilege or tearing my mouth up, stitches and all, for no reason. As well I knew the freezing wasn't taking and told him several times throughout this painful 45min/1hour experience and each time he dismissed and ignored me until finally upon trying to extract he could see I was serious about the pain. This was not the worst part really of this appointment though. I went back to the office, along with my wife who is quite a fair minded person, to discuss the situation and see if we couldn't make it better. I really didn't want to leave Arcola as my family has been there for a while. From the conversation it was made even more clear how little I was valued as a regular customer as Dr.Kwok's attitude throughout the entire discussion was surprisingly aloof. He argued using semantics and was entirely self-serving and inauthentic. Like talking to someone in bad faith he was dishonest several times during our discussion. I went into the discussion thinking it would be easy to rectify the situation, I didn't want anything really but an apology and some better after care for the situation he left in my mouth. However, I left there feeling that the man I once respected was a weasel completely, and much more petty than I assumed. Dr.Kwok hurt me physically today unnecessarily, did not successfully complete an operation that he insisted on doing against my suggestion. He then did not apologize for that or accept any accountability at all. He then charged me money for my visit. He actually said "but the cleaning was successful". I said "Yes, I suppose except the blood in my mouth currently". I personally believe, after my discussion with him today, that he is dangerous to customers potentially and basically his niceness is completely fake. He hurt me quite badly today and very obviously cares less. So I highly suggest finding a better dentist that will at least acknowledge when things don't go as he planned.

If you're looking to replace just a molar or thinking about getting rid of dentures, this is the go…read moreto place! I did tons of research, I was even considering dental tourism to Costa Rica because I got my veneers done there before and was happy and NYC because I knew a friend with connections....but then I realized my little sister came to Chrysalis before and she had nothing but good things to say, so I decided to get it done with Dr. Kwon. Plus, it's local, if anything should happen, it's closer and safer... The cost of traveling would have been the same (flights, hotels, food etc....) The office is super modern, clean and nice! Stones, hardwood floors, waterfalls, music through the entire office, tv's, many chairs and patient areas, dispensed water, just a perfect setup! I got two dental implants, although it does take 3 visits but it's worth it. Tracey, the patient coordinator, will explain the procedure, and she's the most detailed person, and has worked at the practice for many years. Susan, the lady who does your paperwork is very knowledgeable and helpful. They will try their best to cater to your schedule. Please note the CT scan fee of $150, this gives you a more comprehensive 3D scan of your mouth, making sure no nerves are impacted and you have enough bone to support the titanium implant. It's not like the X-rays you get at your family dentist, I would say this is necessary, not every dental office has this machine, I think it's worth a pretty penny or two! I believe most dental insurance won't cover this because of the price, but for what's it's worth, literally a lifetime with little maintenance, an implant will pay off with time. Why would you spend $10,000- $20,000 on a vehicle that depreciates instead you can have something that will last a lifetime with proper care (flossing, brushing, regular checkups etc..). Technology has come a long way, we should take advantage of it. Bridges would destroy your other teeth and needs replacement after 10 years, and no one wants to wear a partial denture.... I'm only 30! I really did my research, as I couldn't justify the cost at first. Vancouver/Lower Mainland doesn't have too many veteran implant specialists, but Dr. Kwon has been around for 20 years. So I just finished the surgery today. Please note, you do need a doctors note from your family doctor saying you are in good health, I'm in great health, but because I was nervous, I think my blood pressure and heart rate went up, I can only imagine others who might have issues. It took less than one hour. The room was like a regular dental office/chair, but had much more tools and a very sterile environment. Dr. Kwon had two assistants, I think this is to keep the surgery area as sterile as possible. One to pass the tools, the other to provide suction of the blood and saliva and making sure the patient is comfortable. I had an entire paper covering/shield that covered my entire head exposing only my mouth, my face was covered as well and my hair. The only worst part is getting a needle in the mouth... You might get more shots because it's surgery, not a cavity filling! As for the rest, the implant placement, nothing but pain free and it feels like a mini screwdriver putting a screw in place. 8 hours later, with a bit of prescribed ibuprofen, and antibiotics, I'm not feeling much pain or bleeding. Dr. Kwon put Gore-Tex stitches/sutures, this keeps out bacteria, I feel fine, like nothing was done today. I didn't need to chew on any cotton balls!! I could have even taken transit home, but already arranged for a ride. So I will go back in two weeks to remove the stitches, and I can't wait to go back and see the results and the team. Dr. Kwon also teaches other dentists in his spare time, which says a lot for his passion in dental care. Owning such a busy practice and teaching after work, can't be easy. I will only trust dentists that teaches others, as my family dentist is also a professor at UBC, you would want someone who is up to date in any area of work. Please look after your health, wealth is health!

Since then, the pain has subsided and my overall oral health, I am happy with. This was all possible because Highgate worked with me and listened to my concerns and worked with me to resolve them and for this I'm being grateful. Update: I am in continued communication with the office and am working towards a resolution. I met with Dr. Katy once again. She was very polite, professional, and organized. When we met originally and things were somewhat chaotic, that was her first week in that office. Perhaps things have settled in and my initial visit was just off the cuff. I will continue to keep Yelp updated. Original Review: I would like to speak to the manager here. I had a root canal by Dr. Katy and I'm still experiencing pain. I find this rather odd as I should have absolutely no feeling in that tooth. I've had a root canal before and that tooth is fine. No feeling and no problems. I also found Dr. Katy's chair side manner quite unprofessional and very disorganized. When I went in for this root canal, I said I wanted an implant because I didn't want to deal with the process of a root canal again. I was talked out of this by Dr. Katy and I'm rather disappointed as I feel I wouldn't be in this predicament had I trusted my gut instinct.
