I can never thank Dr. Sondheimer enough for saving my eyesight. My experience with cataract surgery was to say the least, phenomenal. I had worn glasses most of my life with only minor prescription changes, so I was quite surprised when my vision suddenly became blurry and I found out that I had cataracts in both eyes. I was 56. My vision was rapidly deteriorating and I was referred to Dr. Sondheimer for evaluation. I was going to need cataract surgery with lens implants; options included several types of types of lenses and he explained the features of each lens. I chose multifocal lenses which would function much like "progressive" eyeglasses - there would be no "lines", and my vision would be corrected for all distances: near, mid-range, and far distance. Dr. Sondheimer spent hours with me evaluating my vision and making sure all the measurements of my eyes were correct so that he could order the implants. He even went out of his way and called me after office hours to have me come in for a special measurement that he felt would be helpful in getting more exact dimensions for one of the implants. Both surgeries were done on an outpatient basis; both were totally painless, and I went home later in the morning after each surgery. I never needed pain medication after either procedure. That was 7 years ago. My vision is now 20/20, I do not need glasses, I read normal text in both dim and bright light, and can drive at night. Dr. Sondheimer is not only an accomplished professional, he is also very personable and easy to talk to. He explained everything in easy-to-understand terms, discussed pros and cons of each choice, invited questions, and made even the most stressful situation manageable. As a health care educator, I have worked with many excellent physicians and I can say that I have had the good fortune to be cared for by one of the very best in Dr. Sondheimer. Dr. Stuart Sondheimer is amazing. Few years ago my mom had eye exam done at Costco. Eye doctor at Costco recommended that my mom might need cataract surgery and advised us to see another doctor and get consultation for cataract surgery. We found Dr. Stuart Sondheimer. He examined my mom's eyes. He said her eye looks fine and he advised her not to get the cataract surgery at that time. We are glad that we chose Dr. Stuart. he gave genuine recommendation. We are very thankful to Dr. Stuart. My mother is doing fine. I was convinced then. He's very polite. He will take time to evaluate your eyes and he will never rush you in. I had glasses for 19 years. In these many years I have seen many eye doctors and I never met any eye doctor like Dr. Stuart. Dr. Stuart is amazing. I decided to contact Dr. Stuart's office to find out if he does eye Surgery. His staff said that he does, so I made appointment to see him. Dr. Stuart examined my eyes. He recommended me to go with Monovision and PRK because it's the best option in my case. He gave me pair of contact lens for try out to see how I like them. I am an amature photographer. One day I was taking pictures at an event. I looked through viewfinder with my left eye and It looked blurry. I figured that it's my contact lens. I told about it to Dr. Stuart. he gave me another pair of contact lens and switch the power. I was fine. Then I went for final consultation. I really liked his idea of trial contact lens. It actually let me experienced how I will see after the surgery. He did the PRK surgery on my eyes. I don't regret it. I am glad that I found Dr. Stuart. through the whole process he had been on top of things. I ran out of eye drops. He called the pharmacy right away. He responded to all questions that I had. He never forced my to get the surgery done. He made sure that I feel comfortable. I can go on and on.... He is amazing. Amazing. Thats the word that i use when describing my relationship with Dr. Stuart Sondheimer. His ability to completely explain cataract surgery to his patients and also to give patients confidence and trust in the way he will care for you is uplifting. When you are comfortable with any medical procedure to be performed by a medical professional then the procedure becomes much easier. Dr. Sondheimer builds these feelings in his patients which are Trust, Confidence, & Feeling comfortable. I experienced poor vision due to cataracts in both eyes. My vision was very poor originally with wearing glasses for nearsightedness for 50 years.Due to Dr. Sondheimers professionalism and extreme care for his patients, i can see perfectly clear Without the need of wearing glasses.Dr. Sondheimer not only peforms the cataract surgery, he also follows up like no other medical professional i have ever had. He calls your home to ask how you are doing including a way to communicate with him (cell phone number) in case of any concerns or questions about your procedure. One statement that he made to me was very inspiring. Ask me anything about the procedures i perform, and if i can't answer the question completely then i need a new job. Looking for opthamologist in Chicago area? I highly recommend Dr Stuart Sondheimer. I struggled with terrible vision for 30 years. Due to an astigmatism contact lenses did not fit properly and constantly shifted in my eyes. My husband had LASIK surgery performed by Dr Sondheimer with terrific results in Dec 2005. Shortly after, I visited Dr Sondheimer to see if I was a candidate. After the same lengthy exam that was performed on my husband. Dr Sondheimer determined that he would not perform the corrective surgery on my eyes because I would not be happy with the results. Unheard of rather than taking my money and doing the surgery, he declined...imagine my disappointment. On my husbands one year follow up visit, he asked if there had been any changes in technology that would improve my results? Dr Sondheimer pulled my chart and after careful consideration asked that I come back in. In January of 2007 we began the process of examining and measuring my eyes. At this point he still was not convinced but after double checking his measurements against computer measurements he felt confident that he could get results. I was not a candidate for the LASIK procedure, he would have to perform PRK which would be a slower recovery and return of vision but within six weeks my vision was 20/25 and for the past two annual exams my vision is 20/15. EXTREMELY disrespectful of patients' time. First time there I waited nearly an hour. For follow up, I was on time, and wound up waiting nearly an hour once again. This time I got up and walked out. I will not return to this doctor. Very, very annoying to wait for such a long time... especially when appointment had been scheduled and I was on time. The message this doctor gives his patients is that our time is not important. There are enough other competent eye doctors out there and I will try someone else. And to add insult to injury...while I was waiting, I overheard Dr. Sondheimer telling a woman, "You are too old for Lasix." She was Hispanic and he told her son "tell your mother she is too old for Lasix." If I were that woman (or her son) I would have been embarrassed and upset that Dr. Sondheimer talked to an elderly woman that way. I was embarrassed for the doctor as he repeated this phrase several times. More appropriate (and MUCH more respectful) would have been to say "Your mother is not a candidate for Lasix." Next day, as a follow up, I would have expected the doctor would have had the basic customer service orientation to have made an effort to contact me. He did not. This confirms my belief that he does not care about customer service. C'mon Dr. Sondheimer...I expected more professionalism on your part. read more

Dr. Sondheimer is a masterful eye surgeon who did a wonderful analysis and evaluation of my eyes. We discussed available procedures such as a monovision correction which I discovered was not for me when I did a test run with eye glasses to see what it would be like. I have been wearing eye glasses at full strength and am ready to have a PRK surgery any day now. I like that Dr. Sondheimer took time to get me prepared for surgery as I came into his office originally with an under powered eye prescription and was not seeing the full range of clarity of a full resolution prescription. He understood that I needed to crawl before I could walk and hasn't rushed into the procedure without my eyes taking time to adapt to a full prescription. If you want a eye surgeon who cares enough about your well being to take time until you are ready for surgery than Dr. Sondheimer is the surgeon to consult with. read more

Dr. Sondheimer is a wonderful physician and he has given me the best eye care that I could have ever expected. I had cataracts in both eyes and my eyesight was diminishing rapidly. He did multifocal intraocular implants in both of my eyes and my eyesight is now 20/20, which is normal vision. I could not be happier with the results. He has given me excellent care and I have given him a number of referrals and all of the people that I have sent to him have been extremely pleased with the care that they have received. The first time I was referred to Dr. Sondheimer by Rush NorthShore Hospital Skokie. The office staff was able to have the doctor see me the same afternoon. Every time I have had a problem I have been able to come in the same day. Dr. S is has a wonderful chair side manner and takes the time to explain everything clearly and makes sure that you understand what the diagnosis is as well as the treatment. He takes the time needed to thoroughly review all options. Dr. S also will spend the few minutes to treat the whole patient chat and ask how things are going as well as just chat about the weather and sundry stuff. Both thumbs up. read more

Dr. Sondheimer was very reassuring and helpful throughout the whole process of getting Lasik.
