Easily one of my favorite bars! Not only do they have great beers and a huge selection of bourbons but they also have some of the nicest staff! I'm not much for sitting at a bar when I go out but I almost always sit at the bar here and talk with the staff! The Blueberry Wheat is my usual but I also enjoy trying their limited drops. If you are indecisive they offer flights. The prices are extremely reasonable as well. If you are into bourbon they offer a huge selection, and typically have bottles for sale! It's weird to refer to a brewery as family friendly but this place is! You can often find families sitting at a table playing one of the many board games offered while the adults are enjoying a drink. Though they do not serve food (with the exception of popcorn and they recently added charcuterie boards) they encourage you to bring in food from some of the local restaurants, Shorty's right next door is a great option! The atmosphere is warm and cozy especially on a cold winter's day! I enjoy sitting by the window for the view of the patio and street. Grab a table, review the beer menu and walk up to the "order here" area of the bar. You have the option to order full pours or if you can't make up your mind and want to try several opt for a beer flight. Their beers are oretty tasty! I had a nice experience at this brewery. The space is friendly with various seating options including outdoors. I don't think it's dog friendly but someone had a dog there anyway. I didn't mind. It was a German Shepherd so it seemed appropriate. The staff was friendly and happy to answer questions. The beer selection was good but I wished there were more non-beer options. My partner who loves beer would probably give it 5 stars because he LOVED the beer here. I was less enthused because of limited alternative options but I did try the German Schnapps. Our family loves this brewery! Great place for folks young and old to enjoy each other's company, have some great drinks(complimentary Capri Suns for the kids) and play games. Super chill brewery! Came here on a random Sunday afternoon and we sat outside on their little patio. They have a pretty good beer selection and various cocktails to choose from. Note that they did not have a lot of waiters or waitresses so we went up to the bar a lot to order but service was still quick. They do not have food but they allow you to bring food of your own in. Love that this brewpub is proud of being in a small German town. They make a large variety of beers, most of which I love, and many of which are available in cans. Several are aged in bourbon barrels and have higher ABV. they don't serve food, but customers are welcome to bring their own. There's great barbecue nextdoor at Shorty's Smokehouse, and great pizza available for delivery to the brewpub from Pie Hard around the corner. They sometimes have bands, and they throw a great Oktoberfest called Stubbornfest every September. read more

We tried this place and the beer and atmosphere were both acceptable. What wasn't acceptable were the additional charges that showed up on our receipt. When we walked in, they asked us if we would like to run a tab. I figured we would only have one or two rounds, but sure, why not. What I didn't know is that they charge you $1.50 to run a tab. The bartender neglected to mention this. Also, for every charge, they also charge you a convenience fee. Had I known this, I'd have just paid cash. I feel deceived and will not return. read more

We love the Stubborn German! It's our Cheers bar. It has the feel of a German brew house with long wooden tables and benches. They brew their own beer, of course. My favorite is the Bean Tree Coffee Stout made with coffee roasted at the Bean Tree Café down the street. And they have a tremendous whisky selection and always a Bourbon of the Week at a ridiculously low price. The owners -- Chris and Tammy -- are the real magic of the place. They're good people. Located in small town of Waterloo (about 30 minutes outside of St. Louis), Stubborn German is a laid back German-style microbrewery with games to play while enjoying brews. I decided to do a beer flight, which included choosing 6 of their craft beers for $9.00. A bartender was very helpful with recommending which to try based on my preferences. The following were the beers are tried and my opinions: -Blitzkrieg: hoppy, great flavor -Turn That Brown Upside Down: brown ale with a malty, coffee flavor; hoppy; one of my favorites on the flight -Fountain Creek Honey Kolsch: crisp, refreshing ale with a honey flavor, easy drinking -Make Mexico Great Again: Had to try because of the craziness of the political world! Amber color lager; kind of reminded me of a Dos Equis. -Schitzengiggles: Points for creative name! Another favorite amongst my flight choices. Dark, sweet and toasty Dunkel. Also easy drinking! -Stubbornfest: Reminded me of an Oktoberfest beer. Enjoyable. There are also a variety of cocktails available, including an extensive whiskey/bourbon drink list. I was impressed with this place and am always open to check out various Illinois breweries. Glad that my family from Columbia brought me, my bf, my brother and his fiance to this spot! Stubborn German is pretty new to the Saint Louis craft beer scene, however they are producing some high quality beer. SGBC is located about 30 minutes outside of Saint Louis in the small town of Waterloo, IL. The brewery itself is small, yet it manages to pack quite a bit of punch for its small size. Seating consists of two large picnic tables and several bench seats outside, with more high-top tables and a large U shaped bar located inside. The outside front patio is covered, which is nice for rainy days. As far as the beer goes, its pretty good and there is a pretty good selection available. My favorite were both the Fountain Creek Kolsch (Honey Kolsch) and Waterloo Wheat (Hefeweizen). There are also seasonal beers so be sure to check to see what is available. Another plus for those designated drivers is that they also offer their own locally brewed nonalcoholic Root Beer, should you wish. In addition to full pours, you can also go with a half pour or a flight to try many of the available beers. Overall the prices were reasonable and the staff was friendly and knowledgeable. While I don't get over to Waterloo often I would stop back in next time I am in town. read more

This is a new microbrewery in Waterloo, IL. The inside of the place has a very warm and welcoming feel to it. They have a few tables and benches out front, seating at the bar, a few high top tables and even leaning spots along the wall. Big screens throughout to watch any sports that you need to see. The owner greets you from behind the bar. I ordered a flight, it has eight different beers. All very tasty, my daughter wanted a bourbon on the rocks and she was not disappointed with the selection either. They do not have food and from the looks of the place, that is not something that will be forth coming. I think that they are going to stay true to form and just be a microbrewery. Stubborn German Brewing Company brews some of the best lagers in the St. Louis area. My two favorites are the Munich Helles and the Bohemian Pilsener. The Kolsch inspired ale is also delicious. The beers are cleanly brewed, sessionable, and the atmosphere is very relaxing. The front porch overlooks the town square, which often has live music performing during the summer. Stubborn German Brewing is a great brewery to visit if you're a fan of classic beer styles, like I am. I honestly cannot get enough of the Helles! read more

I wish that they offered national beers as well, but I understand why they would not. They do offer a wide variety of hard liquor. They do not serve food, so they allow you to bring food in. Not only are the beer, staff, other customers, and restrooms great, but they have community style seating to play board/card games (they have on hand or bring your own!) and also on special nights have their own additional games going for those that enjoy a good gamble for a good cause. I have come here several times while visiting family in town. Stubborn is always a must at least 2 times during my short stays and even more in the longer ones. Your drink will never be empty, even if we are not sitting at the bar. My favorite is long time schitzengiggles (the name makes it all the more fun), but they often have others they are hosting and new batches they are trying. Plus, the have a full bar so cocktails as well if that is your flavor of the evening (or afternoon!). As my husband says, they carry the good whiskey and bourbons :) read more

We ordered two flights, each have 6 samples which covers all 12 beers offered. The standouts from the flight were: Heath Ledger Lager - abbreviated OLL on the flight tray. Weight Watchers - abbreviated WW And the Coffee beer. When doing the flight, taste the coffee beer last. It has the ability to crash your tastebuds and not pick up the subtleties of the other beers tasted thereafter. Note: names listed above were our interpretations of the abbreviations as we didn't have the menu in front of us. The inside is gorgeous and smells brand new! The Stubborn German captures the German beer hall experience with a modern craft brewery feel. With several styles of beer on tap, there is definitely something for everyone. I got the black ipa and it was very good. I think one of the things that separates this brewery from others in the area was their extensive bourbon list. Definitely something on their list for a casual to a more well versed whiskey fan. The atmosphere is casual and is perfect for large groups. The service was great even though the place was packed. The prices are very reasonable compared to the breweries located in the surrounding areas. It has several tvs if you are wanting to watch the game while drinking beers. If you prefer a more social aspect while drink there are ample board games and cards to engage everyone in your group.
