Took Paul Lim's intro hip hop class tonight and had a great time. I wasn't in the best mood but man this class turned my frown upside down. And tonight, instructor was playing some good old school hip hop (Tribe Called Quest probably from my high school days 30+ years ago) and I definitely got into a groove and was very excited about learning the dance steps and got the most of it! I came in a litte down and walked out grinning ear to ear. You know I'll be back for more classes. Love this studio! read more

I was really happy to find out one of my favorite dance instructors holds classes at Studio FX. Anthony has been one of the leading instructors in San Diego for such a long time! He had a cardio hip hop class and it was really crowded! What I like is that Anthony breaks everything down for people of all skill levels. Lots of great energy! The women in the back with me, cause I refuse to be in front, were all fun and supportive! However, my running man at the end was walking! LOL! My only complaint is that the AC cannot keep up with the heat that's generated! Yes, this class is fire! Definitely worth checking out classes here! I recently went to a 90 minute dance workout, choreography based session. I am not that familiar with Bollywood dance but a few of us were under the impression it was a beginner class. We were apparently wrong. The choreography was doable until they started the music and we just couldn't keep up and remember the moves. It didn't help the the instructor herself was a little confused at one point. I doubt I'll return. But it was certainly a fun work out! And I enjoyed seeing the colorful Kurta. Btw, there was no AC for this late summer evening class, just a big fan. Also, there's no drinking fountain, so make sure to bring your own water. read more

I wanted to check out the San Diego scene here and my friend recommended this place. I checked out their open session and here was my experience. AMBIANCE: Mira Mesa is a pretty steady place. Not much of a downtown space but multiple plazas. This spot itself is pretty simple. It's in a plaza with other work buildings. The space itself is generally a front desk, two offices, and a spacious studio that can occupy maybe 50 people max. Parking - Since most events happen in the evening, you shouldn't have any issues. Customer Service - Great. I went in and generally welcomed with open arms. Some people are focused on doing their thing (which is cool) while other peeps acknowledge you and sometimes strike up a convo. TL;DR OVERALL 5 Stars. Awesome! Great people, reasonable prices for sessions, and good vibes. San Diego has a strong dance community here and its great to check out some of the spots and artists that share their gifts. This is a great place to go to learn some urban dance. The atmosphere is super easy going and welcoming, and this is coming from someone who has no dance experience and is in their 20s. The beginner classes are taught by some very passionate instructors who really know what they are doing. The studio often has deals once every 1 to 2 months on dance packages. I would definitely recommend getting a package if you plan on coming again. And a membership (which when on sale can be 10 dollars). These prices are extremely affordable and much cheaper than any where else in San Diego and the quality of the instructors far exceed what you are paying. Pro tip, first class is free to try out. This may not be the best review for a person of my demographic (27 years old), but I gave it 4 stars based on what it looked like everyone else taking the class would have given it. I purchased a Groupon and have heard of Studio FX before so I wanted to give it a shot. I've been going to Culture Shock for years and this studio was much closer to my home. I went inside and there were just people sitting around talking and finally one of the women tried to help me since I was just standing there waiting for someone at the front desk. It definitely is a smaller studio and there's one larger dance floor. After being helped, the same woman told me to speak with the owner as she was coming out. So I stood in line and waited to sign in. As I looked around, everyone must still be in high school. No joke. So as a joke...i said to the owner, "Man I feel so old her haha." She told me age isn't anything but a number...which is true...to an extent I suppose. Haha. So I go into the beginner hip hop class with Darkie (who also teaches at culture shock), The room fills up with all the kids. The dance was definitely very beginner and Darkie does a great job teaching the basics. I guess every studio is different as far as what level a beginner is if that makes sense. This was a real beginner class compared to what I was used to. Now if I was still in high school, this place would be perfect! The best way I can explain this is, imagine you're weightlifting in a gym at my age, with a gym full of 12-16 year olds. Great place, just not for me. read more

My issue with the place is that for a dance studio you should up keep your studio better. The staff seems friendly and inviting for the most part but the older woman whom I presume to be the studio owner seems to be always angry and witnessed her yelling back and forth with another individual. The studio itself looks like they're in the middle of a remodel but what is aggravating to me the most is that my daughter twisted her ankle and only to find out that the floor, which is not stable, moves around ALOT from what she told me. Im not going let my daughter go to this studio until the floors are addressed and ill make sure that my friends and family do the same, Im sure I can find studios that care about the wellbeing of their students versus putting them into harms way with their floors! Before you sign your kids up check those floors out. read more

Okay first off, if you're not from San Diego then you gotta check this studio out. It has so many good teachers, an excellent floor, and a nice staff. Their rates per class are really competitive and fair, the environment is friendly, and everyone just wants to dance. I don't think it gets much better than that. One tip: Keep an eye out on the way to the studio. It's kind of hard to find your first time, but once you're there, it's all good! It'll be on your right hand side! read more

Studio FX is a pretty nice budding studio. They're small, but I like the size of their room. I've only been twice, but both times weren't very crowded, and you can see the instructor pretty well. I've done Beginning Hip Hop with Heather Lee and Intermediate with Luis Soto. Both of them were engaging and charismatic. The Beginning class is a true beginner's class. The Intermediate class is rightfully more advanced, but it moves at a good pace (even though I still had trouble coordinating myself x.x). I also noticed that a lot of youngins come here. Like HS youngins haha. Which is cool. But just something I noticed. Probably because it's so close to Mira Mesa. They have some nice specials sometimes, so be on the lookout on their website! read more

Good studio, good instructors but the only thing I would change is, PLEASE ADD air conditioning. When the rolling garage doors are up, other neighboring tenants smoke like chimneys and the cigarette smokes drifts into the studio. I probably will not be returning to this studio that often because I don't want to subject myself to second hand smoke. I'm here to workout, not to become a candidate for cancer. read more

You have to try the Monday night at 7PM with Vinh. Such a fun dance class. We learned basic house dancing foot works and Vinh makes sure everyone is understanding the moves. My legs are sore and I got a good work out! read more

Took my 4-year old today for his first hip hop lesson. I was afraid he was too young but he fit right in. Most of the kids were about 8 years old to about pre-teen. The instructor Vanessa, who is also the owner, was great at guiding my little one in feeling comfortable in the class. There were 8 kids in the class so there was lots of personal attention. The class was taught at a great pace for young kids to get the moves right and feel confident. My son loved the experience! We can't wait to go again! read more

I tried Angelica's beginners' hiphop class and I had a blast! Today was the second time that I joined the class and she never disappoints. I'm not a dancer so I was somewhat embarrassed about dancing in front of a lot of people, but the class itself was really fun so I ended up enjoying it and not minding too much whether I had the rhythm or not. It might seem easy for pro dancers, but it was tough for me. I was sweating the whole time and I burned 500 calories (had my fitbit while doing it). The best part was I was burning calories and I was having fun at the same time. She broke down the steps and made it easier even for a non dancer like myself. I just wish that Angelica had more classes. Maybe during weekends or even on Thursday nights. It's somewhat tough to go to her class every time because of the schedule. All in all, I've tried other classes from other studios before, but this beginners' class with Angelica is by far the best! She made me feel at ease and not intimidated even when I have two left feet :) I'd be going every Mondays until my summer break is over. If she could have alternative dance class schedules, I'd be more than willing to even sign up as a member. Mad props to this establishment and Angelica, the instructor! read more

I was looking for a hip hop dance crew to perform at my sister's Sweet 16 party, but got much more. Vanessa, the studio's owner, not only booked the Syde FX dance crew for me, but also offers a chance for the birthday girl to be a part of the act! It was a wonderful surprise for all of her friends. Vanessa is also a great event day manager as she helped make sure that everything ran smoothly the day of the party. She was a real pleasure to work with and she gets things done!
