I first met Bryce Denison and MPW in 2020 when I attended a photo review session that they hosted…read more I had been shooting since 2013, entirely self-taught, and had a bit of a chip on my shoulder. I think I was looking more for validation rather than constructive criticism. I got my wish; my images were appreciated along with some nice compliments. But then, unexpectedly, Bryce spoke about several things regarding composition, light, and editing that I had not heard before -- and trust me, I've just about heard it all, as have most of us. Over the next few months, I attended a couple of MPW outings. Each time Bryce taught me things I didn't know. So it didn't take me long to figure out that Bryce was a walking talking repository of photography knowledge and experience who knew things that you don't hear a lot about elsewhere. I asked Bryce if it would make sense for me to attend his Intermediate shooting class and bypass his Fundaments 101 class. He recognized that I had quite a bit of knowledge and experience, so he was on the fence about it. He quizzed me about some shooting concepts that I should know, and I correctly answered 4 or 5 of his 6 or 7 questions. So, what to do? I thought I might be missing some important stuff, so I signed up for the Fundamentals 101 class. I completed it (mostly) in November of 2021. Now in retrospect, it was the right decision. Although I probably already knew about 75% of what was presented, the remaining 25% was astonishing. Of that 25% about half was stuff that I thought I knew but really didn't understand or use correctly. And the rest was stuff brand new to me. Example: Do you know the difference between lens acuity and lens focus? Why is that important to know? How do you calculate which aperture maximizes a given lens's acuity sweet spot? Example: Even given sufficient light, did you know that the lowest ISO setting available in your camera is not necessarily the ISO that generates the least amount of noise? Do you know which ISO setting generates the least amount of noise? Why is that so? Teaching myself photography, I took many online courses, consumed countless various tutorials, scoured Scot Kelby's website, and watched all kinds of B&H and Adorama YouTubes. I consumed as much material as I could get my hands on. But that last 12 or 15% that I learned in Bryce's Fundamentals 101 class just isn't taught anywhere these days. Bryce tells me that most of that stuff was either old-school common knowledge or new tech stuff that's not commonly understood yet. Bottom line, even if you have been shooting for a long time or were self-taught like me, the Fundamentals 101 class is worth every penny. I can strongly recommend it to almost anyone.

This is a class for those people, like me, who wanted to move away from point and shoot photography but don't quite know how to. The first night of class you are given a CD which contains all of the power point lessons covered throughout the class. It is nice to have that to reference back on. Some of the topics covered are aperture, F-stop, portraiture, landscape photography and well, everything in between. There are 6 four hour classes followed by a 'break the rules' Saturday class that is 6 hours. They offer several classes, like probably close to 100. I enjoyed the class and am considering taking further classes. I think for the price, you get your money. The best thing about the class was the willingness to teach. Bryce is a brilliant photographer and he was obviously passionate for his students to learn. Having said that, I will also say he is quite the character and may take a minute to adjust to. But hang in there, put up with this sometimes long and drawn out stores because somewhere in the midst is a golden nugget that if learned and applied will make your pictures better. There are homework lessons every week and I thought this would be the part I would dread the most but I really appreciated the constructive feedback and also liked viewing my classmates pictures as well. As with all artistic outlets, tastes and styles vary and it's fun to see the differences within the group. Lastly, if you are looking to purchase more equipment or have any questions about where to go next, Bryce is very open to meeting and talking with his students one on one. Half of one of the classes is talking about brand names and what he considers the must have essentials. Whatever you do, don't go buy a bunch of equipment before the class starts. Learn from him on what you need and don't need. His wealth of knowledge is very impressive and even if I didn't learn anything in the class (I did) I would have taken it if only to have a great resource available when I have questions or concerns. If you're looking to improve your skills, no matter what skill level you are at, you cannot go wrong with Midwest Photography!

First, Chris' website has two of the most crucial elements: pricing and portfolio. I could see the quality of work I was going to get and how much I was going to pay for it. Sold. Second, I submitted an inquiry via Chris' website and got a very fast (less than half an hour, I believe) callback to schedule a time. He was very accommodating with my schedule and quick to answer my questions. After the session, the quick processing turnaround time and easy access to the photos was much appreciated. One aspect I really enjoyed was that Chris really gets to know people he's photographing for corporate shots (this probably extends to weddings, etc. I'd imagine). Their profession, how they want to come across, the kind of attitude they want to express, etc. He can then instruct and guide you so that you have the best experience possible. Chris was very efficient in bringing out my best qualities, which really speaks to his experience. My session was last week, and my great photos are already up on professional websites, sent to clients, etc. I'd highly recommend Chris' work!

HARD PASS. I purchased a Groupon for 2 people to do the cell phone walking tour back on May 3rd…read more There were no dates available to register for the class on the website so that should have been a red flag, however, the rating on Groupon was 4+ stars. I had to email, send messages on the website and call many times before I heard back from someone. When I got a hold of someone, they told me that they only do the class once a month. My friend and I scheduled the class 3 weeks in advance. I got a text message confirming that we could make it on the day of the tour. I confirmed. We showed up at the DIA as instructed at noon and when we arrived, I got a text that the "teacher" was running 30 minutes late. My friend and I waited over an hour and no one showed up. Not the instructor or any other people to take the walking tour. I find it hard to believe that they are promoting this tour on Groupon and only one person a month is trying to schedule the tour. I called the person 2x and she didn't answer and then someone showed up over an hour later as it was going to rain. This is unacceptable. The person that showed up was not wearing any shirt or badge to indicate any affiliation with Photo Sensei. Additionally, when we questioned where the tour would go, she said "she wasn't sure" and she would have to check her phone. She also mentioned driving somewhere, which is a bit fishy as we were prepared to go on a "walking tour" not alone in some strangers car. I also noticed that any positive reviews for this company were from many years ago. Be aware of this.
