While it is pretty casual inside the food is much more than you might expect from what looks like a shack on the beach. We enjoyed the fish of the day, grilled served with a few chips and salad. We also shared a tomato salad entree and some bread. Food was fresh, high quality and perfectly prepared. Portions were very reasonable - this is not a place where you need to order an appetizer instead of a main course to avoid over eating. Service was very warm and welcoming and you just can't beat the view. If you want to eat inside away from the heat, advance reservations are essential. Recommended.

It is also famous for its' seafood, and seasonal, local produce driven food and wine menu. Recently, the Star had a makeover which has resulted in even better views of the ocean from every table, and a contemporary, bright feel. Local art adds colour. Before perusing the Autumn menu, we opt for a glass of bubbles out on the deck, which you can also book to dine upon. Service is friendly, chatty but not obtrusive. We are kept informed and engaged in chat when there was a bit of a delay for our mains to come out, which was good customer service. Tables are set classically with white cloths, and a little bit of nature in the form of a potted succulent. Nice glassware for sparkling, whites and reds is offered. Chef sends with his compliments an amuse bouche of tiny smoked potato cubes, smoked mascarpone, and a lightly spiced potato crisp. A little mouthful of heaven smoky, crunchy, potato still al dente with bite, and not over seasoned with salt. Crumbed croquettes of 'brandade' or salt cod are served with fresh crab meat, potato mousse, smoked roe and sprinkled with spiced powders ($18). My MIL loved it! Mr Wino's special of the day ($16) was white anchovies presented in their own tin, with a garlic mayo and toasts. Gone in mere seconds! Pumpkin tofu ($16) is not a 'true' tofu as there is no soy in it. In fact, this is far better! You can taste the pure flavour of every ingredient. The tofu is silken and wobbling and rich with pure, savoury pumpkin flavour. Seed crisp is crunchy and studded with roasted pepitas. Savoury Japanese pumpkin is also served roasted over coals, with just a hint of sweetness. MIL opts for the Star of Greece classic, Kangaroo Island battered whiting, chunky hand cut chips, watermelon salad and sauce gribiche ($33). Pretty in pink, my house made fettuccine is stained with an earthy but not overly flavoursome pink beetroot sauce, sprinkled with toasted walnuts and adorned with a slice of heirloom yellow beetroot ($29). As pretty as it was, it was a little cold, and while I polished off the lot it wasn't as flavoursome as my pumpkin starter. Glorious greens. For an extra vitamin boost we also have a serving of the seasonal veggies, with truffle oil and roasted walnuts ($10), which is perfectly cooked, glossy and fragrant from the truffle oil. We were all happy to eat our greens! Afterwards or before, the beach beckons. A stroll along the orange cliffs with sand beneath your toes is very good for the soul, and for digestion!

At last I can stop driving as far away as Port Elliott to get a pie of taste and quality!…read moreI love this bakery and it opened in December 2011 at a time when first moved to SA and lived close by in Seaford. Toff, Cara and the staff at the Home Grain Bakery have perfected the art of the perfect pie! During my time in Adelaide I must have sampled nearly every "Pie of the Month" and my usual favourite "Beef and Green Peppercorn" which has won the best pie award on numerous occasions. This is my favourite as it is simply delicious. I have never had a chunkier pie! Please open a pie shop in Sydney - as I know you'd do well. I also frequented usually on Saturday mornings so that I could sample the breakfast pie range as well. If I wanted a the 'Bacon Brekky Pie', I needed to be down at the bakery early, because they usually sell out by mid morning. If this pie sells out don't fret because there is usually a Spinach and Mushroom Pie still available. Both breakfast pies are the best I have ever tasted and so much better than a quiche! In addition there are many Vegetarian pie/ pastie options. If you'd like to be temped with some sweet choices - there are lots of Jam Berliners, Finger Buns, Vanilla Slices (Yum), Beerenberg Kitchener Bun,Croissants and donuts. Freshly baked bread loaves are also displayed in the bakery window. Too much choice to choose from. I complement my meals with locally roasted Villere coffee made on the Ruggero Espresso machine. The best coffee 'Down South'! All coffees are served with a little moon shortbread made exclusively by Margaret -Toff's Nan- for the bakery. These should also be packaged for sale as they are delicious. Every time I visit Adelaide - I have to come back for one of Home Grain Bakery's Pies.

The fingerbun was overpowered by the icing. The staff member I dealt with was unsure of which items were vegan. We've been here a few times for lunch and dinner, and it never disappoints! Yesterday we came here for coffee and cake, which was amazing ;) The menu is chock full of gluten free and vegetarian options - and they are fantastic choices, not just 'token' menu items (the vegetarian lasagne is to die for!). Their kids meals are great too, since they are all served with mash potato instead of the usual fries, making them a much healthier choice. There is a vast array of interesting desserts on offer too - yesterday I had the chocolate and orange cake, which included an array of nuts and seeds, and my partner had the sticky date pudding (possibly the best I've ever tasted!). They sell amazing protein balls too, which look incredible - I'm looking forward to coming back and having one next time ;) Nice wholesome food, which makes you feel like you are making a healthier choice! The setting is like an old-fashioned summerhouse - very charming and relaxing. Service isn't super-quick - they need extra staff during busier periods. I would have given them 5 stars, but their opening hours are a bit limiting (we usually dine out on Sunday nights), and they aren't opening on Saturday nights "at the moment" either (not sure if this will change in the near future?). Gawler Street in Port Noarlunga has become a bit of a foodie haunt - so while you're here, make sure you pop in to The Fleurieu Pantry!

The Fleurieu Pantry is part of the Eat Local South Australia movement, supporting local produce. They also support all different types of dietary requirements, including gluten free, vegan, raw and paleo. Once you make your way through the entry door at the end of the alley, the cafe opens out and up. It almost feels like a garden party at your eclectic aunt's house. It feels fun and buzzes with chatter and energy. Table service is friendly and attentive but not at all intrusive. As well as a menu of regular favourites, there is always a substantial specials menu. Vegan and gluten free options are well marked. The smoothies and juices come served in mason jars with handles and wide straws. The serve is large enough to have you sipping before, during and after your meal. Local favourite Goodiesons Beers are also available, as well as organic wine from Battle of Bosworth. The wait for meals is under ten minutes, even when it is very busy. To pass the time there are cookbooks to browse or card games on the tables to keep you entertained. Mr Wino's green curry looked really impressive, with fat, fresh prawns (tails on) and a mixture of black & basmati rice. The sauce was flavoursome with Thai basil, a hint of chilli and lime juice and the veggies still had bite. The Veggie Slice special was a frittata of sweet potato & zuchinni plus black rice. It was a large serve and tasty napped with a generous portion of basil sauce. The side salad was napped with tasty balsamic dressing and a crunchy seed & pepita mix. The choc-orange cheesecake is raw and vegan and totally delightful. A date & nut base gives way to a so smooth chocolatey interior and a rich choc-orange ganache scattered with cocoa nibs. Each time I have dined at The Fleurieu Pantry I have been impressed by it's garden party atmosphere, table service, luxe handwash & cream in the bathroom, eat local / low waste philosophy, vegan options and secret hidey-hole access way. There's a lot to love here.

Omg this place is the absolute bomb!!!…read more This is my new favourite cafe .. I'm Veggo/vegan and this place is - by a mile - clearly for me - the best tasting vegan food I have ever tasted!!! They say 'At Salem we make all of our meats, cheeses and sauces in-house. We smoke, grill, and slow roast our plant-based menu to give it deep flavours and good fortune.' I say - well done guys you've got this soooo friggin right!!! So far I have only tried there tofu scrambled and their BLT sandwiches ( on their specials board this week) but as I only heard about this cafe last week - I'm already addicted!! This has to be the best vegan cafe in Adelaide by a long shot - in fact the best that I've been to anywhere in a very lonnnng time!! There's something about the way these girls do it - (it might be the booze) that it just tastes sooooo good.. so good in fact I couldn't and still can't believe it's all plant based food!! I actually had to ask them just to make sure.. They have a range of homemade sandwiches, juices, hot drinks, iced drinks and deserts .. and I noticed a coming soon beer cider & more I haven't got to the desert menu yet but their ice chocolate was incredible!! Annnnd look out Adelaide people - they do Uber eats too!! What more could you ask for!! The cafe has a really cool friendly relaxed vibe, I heard a sweet little voice say hi there when I walked through the front door ( Having no idea where it came from took me by surprise - but realised it was the chef in the kitchen greeting me ) The girls working that day were lovely and helpful. They apologised for the wait (but there was no need - as there really wasn't one) it was maybe a 10mins max from the time I ordered to getting my food (a BLT sandwich and an iced tea).. they had 3 groups come in and two Uber orders on the go - so they were doing well!! The only issues I can see them having here are actually all PROs for them 1. They will run out their delicious food way too quickly - it takes 8-12hours for them to cook the 'meats' so once the hordes of vegan peeps cotton on to this place - it will be GAME on for young & old veggos when doors open at 9am each day!! 2. They will run out of seating too quickly - the dining room has one large table to seats maybe 8-10 people & then a few two seaters & a couple of waiting benches.. the sewing shop next door that has been relatively quiet for the last 50 Years - might get some referred business from the peeps waiting for a seat and then choosing take away!! 3. There won't be enough Uber drivers in Adelaide to deliver this hot stuff around town - more importantly to my joint!! 4. I potentially will miss out on my favourite dishes and regret ever writing this review!! My work here is done - if I never write another review you will find me in Salem cafe in a bath full of ice chocolate - eating my way through every single menu item from 9am Thursday's through Sundays.. But honestly do yourself a favour - even if your not veggo - give this place a crack it'll be worth it & it might just open your mind to how great some of this food can be.. Peace
