My friend is an experienced kayaker, but I had never been before. Lincoln patiently (and expertly) instructed me in the basics, then let me enjoy my sunset paddle. The next day, at the sunrise paddle, he added in a few more pointers here and there (not too intrusively--just little bits to help improve my technique, my control and my experience of the lake). Then he added a few more pointers on my eco-tour (I discovered that river kayaking is different than lake kayaking, and requires mastery of a few distinct techniques). Two zen-like floats, and an engaging and informative eco-paddle. And here I was, a rank beginner! The company told us not to call the Coast Guard (others did anyway) and promised help--but instead sent two men in a truck who could only take three people, stranding the rest of us with small children and no keys or phones. When we finally got back, the owner was rude, blamed us, insisted his boats never fail, and tried to charge us the full rental plus $2,000 for damages--on the boat that had broken down. Check the Google reviews before booking--this isn't the first time this has happened. Spend your money elsewhere.

It was the most chaotic, stressful, dangerous thing we've done as a group. Do not do a rafting trip if you think you're going to have any time to enjoy the scenery, talk, or enjoy a family activity. The river was extra fast due to high water levels and there are constant obstacles to avoid. We are all lucky to have made it with only minor injuries. Way too many close calls. It was not just us that were not enjoying our time on the river. Every kayaker and tuber we encountered felt exactly the same way. Several said they'd been crying at times, it was so chaotic.

Unfortunately, the forecast called for a cold and rainy day for the Monday our boat was booked. The company told me they have a no refund policy unless it's really raining, but the cold alone isn't fun when on a boat. Fortunately, they were very accommodating even with their policy and let us move the boat to a few days later when the weather forecast looked perfect. We had a boat big enough for 14 people (very roomy for our party of 5) and a tube. My husband doesn't have much boating experience, but didn't have any issues after a 3 minute lesson from the friendly woman at Boyne Watersports. The highlight for the kids was definitely the tubing. They have 2 types of tubes: the laying down ones my kids use at camp (for 3) and another one that's more like a couch (for 2). We opted for the "couch" tube and the kids absolutely loved it. They went again and again and again. By the end they were asking for a "hells ride" and flipping all over the place. We wish we had taken them up on instructions for how to dock the boat because the kids started to get hungry and we passed by their new favorite restaurant, The Landing. However, my husband was too nervous that he would crash the boat attempting to dock so we waited to eat until we got back. 4 hours was the minimum, but I think 3 hours is plenty. It's also a very expensive outing, but was one of the highlights of our trip up north! I'd definitely use this company again. They did mention you could rent boats for less time if you walk up, although the gorgeous day we rented was a busy one for them so probably best to rent in advance.

When I used to come up here I would be so surprised that the lake bottom was sandy and that the water was clear. What a shocker right?? This lake is the perfect size. It's small enough that as a good swimmer you can swim across it, but large enough that you can take out the ski boat and ski, pontoon boat and relax, or sail on the catamaran. Being part of the Chain of Lakes means that it's connected, through a series of rivers, to multiple other lakes so you can spend the day boating through nature areas and rivers to gain access to other local lakes. You can also boat your way over to the Dockside, park, and hang out on the porch. The other great thing about this lake is that it is located next to some really cute little towns like Bellaire and Alden. Day trips out to Traverse City (the only large city around) take about 45 minutes and Charlevoix is close as well. For a slightly longer trip away, about 2 1/2 hours, you could go to Mackinac Island which is an island filled with historic houses and no cars, only horse and buggies are allowed (in the summer at least). Finally, my favorite thing about Lake Bellaire is the fact that the majority of lake cabins are truly cabins, not monstrosities of the like that line the shores of southern lakes. You really feel like you are going back in time and that there is nothing better than a day at the lake minus tv and outside influences.
