My family and I have also gone kayaking a few times while there, and the kayaks are all in great shape, the routes are well marked (I know they dealt with a lot of fallen trees this year but it's all been cleaned up). But, the kayaking from this location is the best IMO. Every other guest I've met here is also super nice and affable, so they seem to attract great people to stay here. Amazing rooms with clean, comfortable beds, each with their own full bath. A few yards from the river or a block from downtown, it just doesn't get better than this. We called to confirm a canoe for early afternoon for the shorter paddle option which is a 2 to 3-hour paddle on the lovely Au Sable river. The river is quite curvy and the water is surprisingly clear, often shallow but with just enough depth to float freely. The distance is described as 8 miles, but per the GPS, it seemed a good bit shorter, so we paddled faster than we needed to. The scenery was great - lots of ducks and a mix of riverside homes along some stretches as well as quiet natural areas. Penrod's location and service were excellent, and both the launch and take-out at Burton's Landing were super easy. Definitely recommend.

I have been to a couple canoe/kayak rentals down state and Shel-Haven is so much better! First, they will drive you to the spot on the river and then you kayak to where you car is parked. So convenient! Depending on how long you want your trip to be will depend how far up the river you get dropped off. Second, they do not hold your credit card and there is no annoying deposit. You just hand them your money for the time you want to be on the river and then you are done - transaction over! You do not have to check-in back and get your deposit back or have to pay more if you went over the time limit. Third, the staff is great. The gal who checked us in was amazing, so friendly and helpful! She also accepted the Yelp discount without hassle or questions. 2.5 hour trip in a two person kayak was only $18.00! Such a great deal. The kayaks were very nice, clean, and did the trick. Fourth, the river and trip itself is so peaceful and beautiful. A great trip to take if you are not an avid canoer or kayaker. River is decently wide and calm. Not a lot of crazy turns or quick current. We did not see a lot of wildlife.There are homes that line the river but some areas are pure woods with no homes, so it is a nice mix. The water is not that deep either. I would say the deepest we saw was 3 feet while on average it seemed to be about 2 feet deep. Fifth, easy ending place when you are done with your trip. You can also swim when you are done with your trip and the water here is about 3 feet deep. There was a worker at the return site to help you. Parking lot was also right there and you could go on your way.

I received an email with all of the information and directions I needed beforehand. The bus ride to the river's start point was comfortable. On the way, we were briefed on what to expect and safety information. The winter rafting ride was magical. We were lucky enough to have just gotten a fresh snowfall. The views truly looked like a scene out of a movie. The Jordan River was a stable flow therefore little paddling was required. The snow's heaviness weighed some branches down over the river so some ducking was in order! Our guide, Sam, was outstanding. He was knowledgeable about the river, area, and provided great local recommendations! Partway on our journey, our guide led us off the river. Where we were treated to homemade cookies and hot drinks. Run don't walk to Jordan Valley Outfitters!

It's really nice to have a campsite along the river and really nice they shuttle you to the starting point and provide usually good quality tubes and also offer tubes for your cooler if you pay per cooler tube.

This was our first and last stay at Trailside Campground…read more We rented Cabin #3, which is only about 25 yards from the pavilion. It was Friday, July 24, and there were no scheduled concerts or events. Around 5 or 6 people, including the owner, were partying in the pavilion with extremely loud music, strobe lights, and a disco ball until the early morning hours. The cheap curtains in the cabin did nothing to block the flashing lights. At about 1:40 a.m., I politely walked over and asked if they could just turn the music down a little. I never asked them to shut it off--I simply wanted it lowered enough that we could get some sleep. The owner's response was unbelievable. He appeared to be intoxicated and immediately came storming toward me yelling, "Hey! Hey! Hey!" He then told me, "This isn't a KOA or a family campground. This is going to go on until 3 or 4 in the morning," and said he'd give me a refund. He wasn't calm or respectful--he was aggressive and confrontational over a simple, reasonable request. The next morning, another camper stopped me in the bathroom and said she felt bad for how the owner spoke to me. She told me another camper was so upset after witnessing it that he left the pavilion. She also mentioned the owner had been drinking all day because they were celebrating the one-year anniversary of buying the campground. We weren't the only people bothered by the noise. Campers across from us were complaining too. If your campground isn't family-friendly and you plan on having loud parties until 3 or 4 in the morning, that's your choice. But be upfront about it so guests know what they're paying for. More importantly, don't treat paying customers with disrespect when they make a polite request. Customer service starts at the top, and unfortunately our experience with the owner ensured we'll never be back.
