We chatted with the clerk at the counter as she sliced and wrapped the two pieces stacked on top of each other separated with a piece of butcher paper and tied up with string. We bought a bag of sliced pagnotta bread once baked and a bag of prepared pizza dough. The total came to about $17. The shop is quite small so only one client is allowed in the store at a time. The marinara pizza is covered in a juicy layer of tomato sauce. Tastes great just like that or lightly toasted in the oven. Make sure to put leftovers in the fridge or it'll mould. The huge slices of pagnotta bread is great toasted with jam and peanut butter. It's fairly light and airy as a bread. The once baked crust is soft and pliable. If you like it crusty, ask for the twice baked pagnotta loaf. You can also buy it whole and slice it yourself at home. Our favorite was really the pizza dough! It was enough to make 4 personal sized pizzas and the dough is pillowy and just a bit chewy with a nice crust on the exterior. It can keep about 3 days in the fridge. I definitely recommend the dough for some DIY (decorate it yourself) pizza at home :)

Today I stopped in to pick some pizzas for lunch. I dropped in late so there wasn't much to choose from - ended up with half a slab of all dressed pizza and 2 all dressed calzones. The calzones were fine; a good snack to fill you up, but not too exciting though the bread saved it. The pizza was better, more flavour and the sausages used added a level of complexity. Wish I could have picked up a fresh tomato pizza... They prepare it just the way I like it: semi thick, fluffy dough with a generous amount of crazy good tomato sauce! Umf! In all, this bakery is another of Montreal's local institutions with years of history (fyi you can buy a dvd of the store's history for $10!!). They bake serious traditional breads and make for a good lunch stop.

What initially perked my interest was from their vegan Indian selection. Found myself eager to test out their Vegan Chicken Vindaloo, which they heated up for me from the prepared food fridge. (The range in Bagel on Greene's prepared food set warrants a further investigation if you live nearby.) Since it was something I've enjoyed all my life, I order their round, baked traditional Potato Knish... somewhat in size between the frozen Mini Knishes my mom always made as a side and the larger New York Lower East Side's Yonah Schimmel version. Of course, the Karnautzel long sausages caught my attention. I was expecting to get brown Deli mustard, but only Yellow and Dijon were available. Finally, two new for me Zero Sugar sodas to drink: 7up and Dr Pepper. Note - Other options available beyond a bagel/deli selection include: a small buffet tablet with other heated items, Spring Rolls, Spicy Potato & Vegetable Rolls, Cheese Rolls, non-traditional Knishes, Pakoras, cookies like Gingerbread Men. They also have meat dishes, if that's your thing. Opted to eat inside Bagels on Greene, although the covered outdoor tables looked great. My Vindaloo tasted great... the vegan chicken substitute did not make me miss the chicken!!! The Knish, topped with poppy seeds, was pretty good. The Karnautzel, less my thing, wasn't that bad too! Those Zero Sugar sodas... didn't miss the sugar either! All good! Bagels on Greene isn't a fancy place, but the reasonably priced, wide offering of tasty items should provide something of interest for a meal. While I can't speak about their bagels, it's a place I'd recommend checking out yourself, if that's your thing.
