I really try to support local business when I can, which is what drove me to Suburban Eye Care a few years ago. I've had a few small problems with them, including pricing issues and communication issues, but I was willing to overlook them. However, the last straw for me was at my most recent eye exam. During some routine tests, the tech sat me in a chair in a darkened room, explained the upcoming test to me, then nonchalantly told me that the test would be an additional $45 charge, without giving me an alternative or the option to reject the test. However, I interrupted her and told her that I wanted to reject the test. The tech then said that I would need to have my eyes dilated if I rejected the test, and I agreed to that. Then, she handed me a form and told me that I needed to read it, as I was sitting in the dark without my contacts in or my eyeglasses on, in order to reject the test and opt for dilation. Later, when we returned to the exam room, I was asked to sign the form, again, without my contacts or glasses. It seems to me that asking a patient to read and sign a consent form without their contacts or glasses, in a dark room, is ethically dubious. It also seems like really shady sales practices to make a test with an additional $45 charge the default, when a no-cost alternative is also available. I don't think I can trust Suburban Eye Care to have my best interest in mind after an experience like this. I sent this feedback to Suburban Eye Care soon after my negative experience and received no response from anybody at the practice, so it seems clear that my concerns are not important to them. read more

Be aware of this place specifically the vision therapy department, poor communication, professionalism, and questionable intentions - left feeling scammed. The vision therapy manager requested 12k out of pocket costs confirming my insurance would not cover. As soon as I raised concern about cost, they instantly provided a $4k reduction. The vision therapy manage was annoyed with me questioning the cost when come to find out my insurance coverage had never been checked! My insurance company had to reach out to them to get them to even check my insurance. They even called me back to let me know something seemed odd about their conversation with Suburban Eyecare Vision therapy manager. Sharing this experience as I'm honesty at a loss as to why this was such a difficult, confusing experience when it was easily avoidable with a little work - that I ended up doing in having my insurance company contact them. I ended up choosing not to go here given this experience and also after researching this isn't the first time this place has been involved in scams with the owners history of being indicted on many felony charges of writing illegal prescriptions. My husband and I went to Suburban Eye Center for exams and therapy. We had great insurance coverage. Yet we both were told on different days that our insurance didn't cover their services. That's odd we thought. I had called my insurance company beforehand and was told all was covered. So, I asked the head of billing and was told, "No. Your insurance doesn't cover anything." I asked her, "Can you at least send the bill in to my insurance company and that way I can appeal it?" She said, "No." (huh?) No? You won't at least send it in? She repeated, No. It's not covered. After paying for their services we went home and called the insurance company who offered to call them after reiterating that it was indeed covered. Our insurance company told them that we were covered. After a couple more calls to Suburban Eye Care we received our refunds. Refunds for them charging us CASH when it was NOT necessary. SHAMEFUL! BIG RED FLAG when they won't even send in your invoice to TRY and get your services covered. That way they don't have to go with the "agreed" amount with the insurance company and can charge you the cash cost. SHAMEFUL! Anyone tells you that your insurance won't cover it, call your insurance company and ask. Especially with these type of shady dealings organizations. SHAMEFUL! read more

My experience at this place was two years ago when I got my previous glasses prescription. I'm mad about it all over again now as I am due for another eye checkup. At my appointment, which seemed fine at the time, I received my prescription and had glasses ordered at a different shop. When I tested my new glasses, the prescription was too weak. I called Suburban to have my eyes rechecked, and they said they would have to charge me for another office visit, even if it was doctor error. No way am I going to pay for that! Thank goodness the shop from which I ordered glasses had an OD onsite who checked my eyes and redid my lenses free of charge. The correct prescription was one click stronger in one eye and two clicks stronger in the other. How did Suburban screw it up so bad?? Only good thing about my visit was that the office is nice. read more

"We Treat Every Family Like Our Own" this is in the front page of their website...... False!!! If I could give no stars I would. My daughter started going there about a year and a half ago. Well after they told me my daughter would need vision therapy, I really wanted a second opinion. So come to find out she is in the wrong prescription. My daughter is 8, still can't see fully with her glasses on and has exotropia of the left eye. They blame this on a neurological brain problem when in fact it is a muscle issue which can be healed hopefully with her new prescription! If not, we will go on to eye patching and if that does not work we will need to have surgery. So not only am I upset that my daughters eyes have been strained, the glasses that I bought through them with their prescription on November 23, 2022, that I did not receive them until December 6th, I was told are not allowed to be refunded or changed with the correct prescription. I called them on January 3rd when I got the new prescription to ask if they could change her prescription to the glasses that were about 600 dollars (my insurance paid half and I paid 263) and they refused. They also said I would not be able to get a refund and I had not even had the glasses a whole 30 days even! Well, the place we are currently at even called to talk with the manager and told her that they needed to change the prescription because it was wrong for my daughters eyes or give me a refund for the glasses and the manager assured her I would receive a FULL refund. The manager emailed me to tell me she could possibly get me a restocking fee for the returned glasses. Well come to find out that restocking fee only added up to 148 dollars after I paid 263 and my insurance paid the other half. Please, do not go here. They do not care about their patients. They wanted me to start vision therapy which would not have helped at all and it is not even FDA approved ( which they didn't even tell me and is why insurance companies will not pay for it) If you have a child, please go to an ophthalmologist to start! Been a customer for a little over 4 years now. Dr Jacobi and the staff there are very friendly and as busy as they are remember you. There is a wait sometimes, but I'd rather them take time with each patient like they do and not rush someone thru just to make the next appointment. The doctors are nice enough. I paid a bill the same day and have documentation to prove it. I have received two invoice from their billing company starting a balance. After several calls to Bridget at the billing company and discussing the issue Suburban, they acknowledge the bill was paid but they neglected-to pass that information to there own billing company. Geez get it together people. I still haven't received a invoice stating zero balance. read more

I liked my doctor but I could not find frames which fit my taste. I searched other places and even came back 6 months later to see their updated selection. Unfortunately nothing was appealing. Then after finally finding a place that had frames that screamed my name, suburban eye care would not let me transfer my prescription over. I ended up doing another eye exam just to get my glasses and found out during the exam, after doing a more thorough exam with the new doctor, that the previous prescription was a little too high. It made since why I felt better taking breaks from my glasses (at times leaving my old glasses off) at work. I've been a patient at Suburban Eye care for years now and they are great! The staff is super attentive and will take the time to listen and answer whatever questions you have. My mom goes there too and wasn't 100 percent happy with her prescription. They were more than happy to work with her and change the prescription to one that worked better for her. Dr. Arnold is awesome! He was able to help me figure out what type of lenses would work best for my lifestyle and took the time to talk with me and figure out what I needed in a pair of glasses. The woman who helped me pick out my lenses took the time to make sure I was 100 percent happy with the style and price of the pair I chose. Doctors a nice but the staff have no clue. Got my first pair of glasses and fine. The second pair needed bi fucols and the guy helping me get them fit was just calling me a liar without saying it when I kept saying I can't see out of them. Had sent them back twice to get fixed and when I said I still can't see out if them he just said well I don't know maybe you need different frames when he was the one that picked them out for me. The person checking you in acts upset that you at there. Again I like the doctors and the doctor assistant and recommend that. If you do get glasses there ask for anyone but the man espicially if you are there with kids, or better yet go someplace else to get fitted. Although the secretary and the guy that fits glasses will tell you that everyone else have no clue what they are doing, that just because they do it better than them. read more

I went to Suburban Eye Care as a teenager, in the old office at Merriman and Schoolcraft, had a 10-15 year hiatus where I lived in other locations, and then returned a few years ago to the current location when we moved back to the area. Hands down, this is a great place to go for your eyes! Dr. Jacobi is great. The staff is courteous and professional. I have been a 20+ year wearer of rigid gas permeable ("hard") contact lenses, and they have always been expertly fit. The staff in the eyeglass department is incredible -- I always struggle to find glasses that I like, and the last pair I got was literally one of the first three selections that the staff found for me after an extremely vague description of what I was looking for. Also, the staff will always readjust your glasses on a walk-in basis. My family will continue to go here for our optometry needs. read more

I recently went to this office about a month ago I have to say I am not impressed. I walked in and was greeted by the receptionist which was good. She was very friendly. However, I did wait for over an hour to see the doctor and I was not even very impressed by him at all. I am pretty sure he is the owner of the practice. I just feel all they cared about was getting my money. The staff was friendly but I do feel it was important that I just bought a couple pairs of glasses even though I could not afford it he just kept pushing it on me. Overall not that great! read more

I will be pulling my records to head to another optometrist. My billing was incorrect and tests not covered by my insurance were performed without notifying me of the costs. Check with your insurance and be sure they are giving you the correct discounts. I ended up paying nearly $200 more than I should have according to my insurance. Long waits, expensive, they act like they are doing you a favor when they are taking all of your money. First appt was for my child who was told 4 years ago by a dr there that glasses were needed so the weak eye didn't get weaker. He went on and on about how the weak eye would shut down without the glasses. After spending $400+ on 2 glasses for a child who doesn't notice any difference wearing them, she didn't wear them! Went back this year 3-4 years later to have her eyes tested. The Dr said they improved a lot. I said she didn't wear the glasses! He started in about how she needs glasses or her eye will get worse. I said the eye that got so much better without wearing the glasses she didn't wear? He muttered something that sounded like a sales pitch to sell glasses that aren't needed! Sorry, I don't buy it!!! No glasses and not taking her back there. Low and behold appt reminder email for her next app that we DIDN'T make. What a scam! Also, I went there. Different Dr. He was nice but scared me into thinking I am on my way to macular degeneration. Oh they want me to buy their eye supplements they sell for $100 for 3 month supply? Not making enough money on the 5,000 % mark up of glasses??? Then I go to get glasses and I asked the saleslady for the bottom line price. She put a number down but not the bottom line. She had the base price and then you add 2 options to that. She made that unclear on purpose. Instead of saying for example it's $100 for normal and $150 for bifocals. I asked several times for the bottom line, final price. I said so it's this price plus this for xyz? She said yes. I go to pay and oh look it's significantly more!! But you said it was this price! I think they expect you to ignore the scam and just pay. But I told her I was annoyed because I specifically asked for one bottom line price. I pointed out that look you said it was this price plus the difference between these two prices if I wanted that option. Nope it's really this much which is a much bigger price. I left very annoyed! Then they make my glasses wrong. I had to wait while another week plus for them. More trips there and back and too much of my time!! Never going back! read more

I usually go to RX optical however suburban was a "premier provider" thru my insurance so I chose to take my daughter here instead. We were interested in getting her first contact exam also. The lady informed me it costed $360 for a contact exam!! Yeah... $360. My husband paid $30 at RX optical last year for his contact exam. I had to decline the contact exam because I told her it was much cheaper at RX optical. When we left I called RX optical just to see if maybe I was wrong and I wasn't. Had I of went to RX optical I would have only paid my $10 co pay for the regular exam + $30 to add on a contact exam. Now since I went to suburban for my daughter's regular exam I have to pay out of pocket at RX for another regular exam and then add the contact exam on to that for $77. I really do not understand why suburban is literally 10 times more than other places. Even america's best gives contact exams for $79..... $360 is price gouging. I am so unhappy and mad that suburban has now costed me more money by choosing them for my business. I will never ever go back and I will make sure everyone I know is told about my experience. You should be ashamed charging that much more! read more
