Stood in line for 15 minutes only to be told they were out of steak. Don't waste your time!

My buddy and I were riding around town on my recent visit back home and I decided I wanted to eat here since it had been so long. My buddy got excited too because he loves the steak and cheese subs which is essentially a Philly cheesesteak . Off the top, my sandwich was decent but unless I'm misremembering it, the sandwich contents are a lot smaller than they used to be. The meatballs used to be so big that the sandwich was basically an open face with two giant meatballs and a large slab of cheese melted over it. The sandwich today had wall smaller meatballs which were consumed by the bread. The majority of it was bread with hardly any meat and the cheese was melted across the top. Still, it did what it was supposed to do; filled me up. This place does great business and I'm sure they have other good sandwiches but I doubt I'll be back. The meatball sub has always been a favorite of mine but todays meal seem to give credence to the adage that you can't go home again.

When Blake's first opened in Asheboro, we were so happy to find another small business to support…read more We are both gluten and dairy intolerant, and Blake's has a GF seasoned bread that is delicious. I always order the fluffy on GF with no cheese, and he always orders the Italian on GF with no cheese. There is cross contamination, so if you are celiac, you can ask them to change gloves, use a clean knife, and keep your sandwich away from the others. We have almost never received the correct order without cheese the first time, but they don't make a fuss when asked to remake the sandwiches, and they are very apologetic. These sandwiches are generous with the meat and other fillings, and the pizza-crust-as-bread works so well. We also get their delicious potato salad with our sandwiches. The seating area is not huge, maybe ten tables, but we've never had to wait for one, and we often take our order to go. The restaurant is clean, and parking is fairly convenient. Even with the issue of having to remake sandwiches, I still rate Blake's a solid five star. It's consistently delicious, and I like supporting a small business in my home community.

When I first visited Southern Pines years ago, my mom took me here. I was a little bit skeptical,…read moreI'm not going to lie. It's right next to a gas station and the name...well...let's just say I had questions. Usually it's the places that are a hole in the wall and dives that are the best, though. Let me just say...after I ordered my sandwich and saw that it came with pickles, I was already a happy camper before I tried the sandwich. That was probably around four years ago. Then I took a bite...and it was unlike any sandwich I'd ever had before. It did get a little messy, but what's good food without it being a little messy? Honestly, I'm kind of a mess so it probably had something to do with that. Four years later - nothing had changed. I love going there to get a sandwich when I'm in the area. I just wish they were open a little later. My top three picks are the Birdie, Greek, and Real Italian. You can't go wrong with any of them. I've also tried the Wally, Sand, Pitching, Flip, Original, and New Yorker (sometimes a family member will let me try some of their sandwich...and vice versa). All great. There is just something about my top three though. I love that they are made fresh to order, that you can customize them, that they have an option for gluten free bread, and unsweetened or sweet tea (their unsweetened tea is delicious). I usually get an extra pickle when I remember. They have decent selections for sides as well. Nothing like a good sandwich from Wedgies and a cool drink in the summer! I do wish for more drink and side options...but that's me being super nit-picky. Get yourself a sandwich from Wedgies! You won't be sorry. Sometimes, calling ahead or placing an order ahead is the best way to go because it's usually very busy. Give a nice smile to all the kind people there as well. They do work hard!

Unassuming location, but the capacity quickly became overwhelmed at lunch, because clearly many…read morefolks know how good these sandwiches are. Yes, the bread is quite peculiar but it's delicious, and the stuff between the "slices" is equally good as well as plentiful. I went with the Real Italian and found it full of flavor. Now I'll need to make a few return trips and try some of the other selections.

We ordered the Chicago Dog, the Reuben Sandwich, and finished things off with a cannolo (yes, the singular form of cannoli). The Chicago Dog was delicious and loaded with flavor, although I have to admit the toxic-green relish initially threw me off a bit (see pic). Once I got past the visual shock, it was actually a fantastic hot dog that stayed true to its Chicago roots. The real star, though, was the Reuben Sandwich. At around $15, it was absolutely worth every penny. Generously stacked, perfectly toasted, and packed with tender meat, melty Swiss, tangy sauerkraut, and just the right amount of dressing. The cannolo was the perfect sweet ending to the meal -- crisp shell, creamy filling, and not overly sweet. What really stood out was how friendly everyone was. The staff made the whole experience feel warm and welcoming. I'll definitely be back... especially for those Thursday $5 draft beer specials. Apex locals, you've got a gem here.
