They usually cook the chicken to order to keep it super fresh, but the big Fishing Derby is in the Kern River Valley this weekend so they had some prepared in anticipation of the crowds. I wasn't mad! The food in the case was nicely displayed, the counters were clean. Pretty decent setup for "gas station" food! The chicken is nice and crunchy, and the thighs in the 2pc for $5 box were so moist and flavorful! Reminds me of a he Southern Fried chicken I grew up on (not the Colonel's.. this wasn't squishy). The biscuit they include in the box is tasty, too. The usual guy behind the counter was out to lunch and we were helped by a lady from the gas station side who was filling in and she forgot the butter and honey, but not a big deal. The biscuits were good "as-is". You can also get fried pies for dessert! They're actually fried, and they're shaped like empanadas. Normally $1.49, only $1 each with purchase - you can't beat the deal. The Apple was so good, plenty of cinnamon and just the right amount of sugar. The Strawberry had cream cheese in it and hubby says the strawberry filling reminds him of his Mom's homemade preserves. Delicious! I've heard the potato wedges are also good but we were already full from the "snack boxes". Maybe next time! I also want to try their gizzards. I haven't seen those anywhere since I was a kid!
