The staff here were so nice. Our waitress was very nice and as attentive as she could be. I think she was the only one working that night. Honestly the chili stood out among the brisket and roast beef sandwiches. The brisket meat when I tried it on its own was very good but fatty. The roast beef was good but compared to the chili, I'd probably just eat a whole bowl. Lastly, don't be discouraged by its tough exterior. I absolutely love 178 Bar and Grill! This review is long overdue, as every visit has consistently been positive, with excellent food and service. From the taco salad to the burger to the pastrami sandwich, everything is prepared with care and never disappoints. The cheese curds are outstanding!! Hands down the best in the area and comparable to the ones I've had in Wisconsin. During this visit, we were served by Lindy for the first time, and she was fantastic! Lindy was friendly and charismatic, making us feel right at home. All of the staff here have been great, and we've never had a bad experience. We also really enjoy the layout of the place. The separate dining area from the bar gives you the option to keep things a little more laid-back if you're coming in with kids or family. We always have a great time here, and we're already looking forward to the next visit! read more

This is quite a nice bar and grill. You have seating both indoor and outdoor. My wife and I usually prefer to sit outside and our baby also tends to like outside. The service has been pretty darn good. The servers bring us our food and even drinks sometimes to the outside seating are. The food has also been pretty good. This place has really great food. I had taken my friend Lucas and his wife Tanya here the weekend following her birthday for lunch. I told them that they could order what ever they wanted. We each ordered a different type of cheese burger and with fries and we got an extra order of onion rings and we each ordered ice tea, this place was packed out. We showed up around 2:30 in the afternoon, if I would have been spending the night we would have came latter for dinner and ribs. It was my first time coming here and I was happy with my experience. The place is sorta loud, but at least everyone there was having a great time. The cheese burger that I ordered, I had gotten avocado and bacon on it besides all the other fixings. I was stuffed by the time I had finished eating and I had about a three hour drive back home. Probably two people could share a meal there if you are not a big eater. I highly recommend this place to others when you are in Lake Isabella or Kernville. read more

The food is very good but the service is terrible. We waited an hour and a half for our meal when there were only a few customers in the restaurant. I have been there several times with great food, bad service. Our waitress went for a cigarette break and the bar tender brought us the food and apologized. And to top it off, the food was Luke warm. I'll return for the summer music but not for a family dinner. read more

Drove up from Bako to the DMV and afterwards the employees recommended this place. It did not disappoint. My wife ordered the bbq bacon burger and onion rings. She liked them both very much. I chose the pastrami burger (recommended by the DMV staff). Holy smokes that was a lot of meat. Smoked pastrami on a big old slab of patty. Brioche bun was perfect but I couldn't finish it all. The lady working the bar was very attentive as I walked in, already having my order all together and ready for me. I was able to pick up quick in and out. Delicious! We came on St. Patrick's day and they had some great traditional meals available. We didn't eat any of those but instead had cheese curds, tots and pastrami sandwich. Both the cheese curds and toys were fried to perfection! The pastrami was not greasy but rather smoked and thin sliced! Oh gosh it was so good! Worth every penny! The 178 Bar & Grill has fabulous smoked meats in much of their grub. We have tried nearly everything on their menu and have never been disappointed. I love their hatch mac n cheese. Their salads are excellent and filling. My husband's favorite is The Pig sandwich. They have the largest smoker out back that I've ever seen. The owners take pride in their smoker and smoked meats. Everything I've ever eaten at the 178 Bar & Grill has been excellent. You can eat and drink in the bar area or in the family area, or outside in the grassy area. They often have live music. They also have a pool table inside. There are multiple TV's inside for watching multiple sporting events. Their philosophy on drink prices is to keep them high enough to keep bar flys away. This is not a dive bar. Food prices are pretty standard for quality meals. If you are looking for a cheap date, this will not be it. But, you will get a quality family-owned mountain sports-bar/restaurant experience. You may even make a new friend while you are there, as the customer base tends to be as friendly as the owners and staff. The staff work their butts off and are warm and friendly (as long as you are warm and friendly). They are worthy of generous tipping. If I recall, a tip will be automatically added to your meal invoice if you have a group. We highly recommend this establishment for a great time, again and again. read more
