Typical subway. Place was clean, orders were quick, and the staff was friendly. Sandwich tasted like every other subway.

For those of you who are unfamiliar with a chopped cheese sandwich, let me break it down for you. A chopped cheese sandwich is when a burger is cooked steak and cheese style and put on a hoagie roll. This sounds like it should be a simple concept but so many sandwiches fall short of hitting the mark. THIS ONE DOES NOT! The meat on this sandwich is cooked wonderfully. The seasoning is perfect. The temperature is excellent. It's juicy and not any way overcooked. It smells amazing as soon as you open the bag. The fries are also a sticking point for me. They are golden brown and have just the right amount of salt and crunch to them without being dried out. My lunch is always really in minutes and I enjoy talking to the owner while I wait. He always greets me with a smile and makes my business feel appreciated. There are several other menu options but I am so smitten with this one that I have not ventured to try anything else.

The owner was so pleasant and kind, and allowed me to make modifications to the sandwiches. It took about 10 minutes for them to be prepared fresh, and in that time, so many other folks flooded into the store to order too! It was great to see how popular they were, given that the sandwiches were excellent. It's close by, so I plan to return soon.

This past Thursday evening, the gals and I shared a bottle of Pinot Grigio and the shrimp fried green tomatoes. For my entree, I opted for the mushroom tortellini which was phenomenal. The staff was kind enough to seat us earlier than our original reservation, which was a really nice touch and much appreciated. I was also happy to see a decent number of gluten-free options. While the main dishes are a bit limited, most of the sides are gluten-free. Now for the food, the crispy chicken sandwich was the highlight of the meal. The Smashburger was also delicious. I ordered the rockfish without the bun, while my dad had it with the bun, and both were great. The beet salad was fresh and flavorful, and the fries were solid. The mac & cheese, unfortunately, was not good at all. On the plus side, the hot cider was delicious. Desserts were a bit of a mixed thoughts. The bread pudding was definitely the best one we tried and really enjoyable. However, the chocolate peanut butter pie was a big disappointment. It was extremely hard and cold (not pie texture), the peanut butter wasn't creamy at all, and it honestly tasted more like a protein bar loaded with sugar. The crust also tasted like it had been sitting in the fridge for a while--disappointing. Overall, we still enjoyed our visit and many of the dishes were great, but the dessert experience could definitely be improved.

I had been telling my Dad for a while about how fun this place is, how nice everyone usually is, and how much I thought he would enjoy it. We were finally able to come together today, and he was genuinely excited to see the inside and have breakfast here for the first time. As expected, we were told the wait would be about 45-50 minutes. Fine. The place was busy, as it usually is, and we had absolutely no problem waiting. I spent years working as a server and hostess. I understand busy restaurants, long waits, and tables that don't turn as quickly as expected. After waiting about 40 minutes, I went to the host stand to simply ask for an update. We had watched people leave and groups continue to be seated during our wait, so I wanted to see where we stood. The young man at the host stand told me it would be ANOTHER 40-50 minutes. I genuinely thought he had confused our name with someone else's, so I explained that we had already been waiting for 40 minutes. He told me our names were "at the bottom of the list" and that people inside were moving very slowly. No apology. No double-checking the list. No attempt to figure out how a quoted 45-50 minute wait had suddenly turned into an hour and a half. He didn't ask if we were willing to sit inside, offer another seating option, or even suggest placing a to-go order. Nothing. He was completely dismissive. So I handed him the menu and my Dad and I left. Then, just 20 MINUTES later--not the additional 40-50 minutes we had literally just been told--I received a call saying our table was ready. I tried to explain that we were no longer there and WHY we had left. The second I said we had "left," I was HUNG UP ON. Honestly, that was it for me. Before that phone call, I was actually sitting in the car telling my Dad that maybe we could try again another day. Despite being embarrassed and disappointed after talking this place up to him so much, I was still willing to chalk it up to a bad interaction with one host. Getting hung up on completely sealed the deal. I'm not angry because the restaurant was busy. I'm angry because we were treated like we didn't matter. I'm angry because we waited patiently for 40 minutes, politely asked one question, and were dismissed with inaccurate information instead of someone taking 30 seconds to double-check. I'm angry because when I tried to explain what had happened, I wasn't even given the basic courtesy of finishing a sentence before someone hung up on me. My Dad and I have lived in Lakeside for over 30 years. We weren't asking to skip the line. We weren't demanding a table. We weren't rude to anyone. We were two local customers who were excited to have breakfast together at a place I had genuinely loved and recommended to other people. We will NEVER be back. And yes, we will absolutely be telling our friends, family, and neighbors about how we were treated and recommending that they go somewhere else unless they want to risk being dismissed, given completely inaccurate wait information, and hung up on when they try to explain why they left. Apparently this place is busy enough that treating people with basic courtesy no longer matters. That's fine. There are plenty of other restaurants that will happily take our money and, at the very least, treat my Dad and me like human beings. What was supposed to be a fun breakfast with my Dad turned into one of the worst customer service experiences I've had in a long time. I went from genuinely loving and recommending this place to never wanting to step foot inside again. Congratulations. You lost two longtime local customers in less than an hour.

ALWAYS recommended them because of food/service/atmosphere. NOT TODAY!! Last night, we ordered pizza, calzone, and two deserts. $70+ after food, service, delivery, tip etc. Get a text @8pm that it would arrive around 9pm, a little later an updated ETA of 9:30pm. Cool. we are watching a movie upstairs, no big, i'll get a text or something when on the way. NO, crickets from that point on. 9:30 comes and goes, nothing, i check my phone, NO text, nothing. close to 10pm now i decide to just check out side incase they are lost (it happens). THERE IS MY FOOD, sitting on my front steps, for god knows how long. No door bell rung, no text made. Couldn't call and complain, because they were closed. When i called today to complain/request refund, I'm told the owner- Tony, was the delivery guy, he had other deliveries to make. he Knocked...so they will refund the tip. THE TIP!? no. there is a working doorbell, it's a camera, it lights up when you walk onto the porch. you were able to text me that you were changing the ETA...why not that it was delivered. but you knocked. ok, cool, my food was cold, there were bugs on my porch flying around the boxes. YUCK! NO - several times i had to call to try and talk with "Tony" today, to no avail, finally i get a call back from Maria, they person i had spoken with each time, she said they would replace the food. NO, at this point, no, Refund. I don't need more pizza that will arrive cold and squishy and be left in the dark. She said she'd get right back with me as she could not authorize. I've heard nothing for hours. i DO NOT RECOMEND ANYMORE! Their service was once great, always pleasant and nice. It's easier to just go to dominos, at least when they mess up i get my money back!

But I can't resist, and it means I have fed two people dinner, and have enough food left to feed us both breakfast and lunch tomorrow, from one sandwich, one special bowl, some dip and a few pitas. There, uh... There is no leftover pistachio cake. It was like eating a ricotta and pistachio cream cloud. But details. The hummus is smooth and tart. The muhummara is some of the best I've ever had; not quite sweet, not quite spicy, but rich and delicious. The pitas are made in house. Enough said, neh? Order extra pitas. The spicy lamb and beef sandwhich is actually a wrap, but they've toasted the outside, and the inside has the expected meats and fries and bits of pickle and so on one ahould expect of a shawarma. The bowl is an excellent adventire for anyone who is; indecisive, new to levantine food, starving, or interestwd in variety. There's meat, cumin rice, pickled onions, slaw, tabbouleh, hummus, salad... But of everything. And honestly, we should have just eaten in. It's a pleasant little space, clean with touches of decor that enhance instead of being oppressive. The staff we spoke with was lovely and helpful and even funny. The wait was minimal. 100% going back- I need to try the entire rest of the menu. Everything has been amazing, I know the rest will be too.

We got two fresh pitas before the meal which were still puffed up and full of steam, both crunchy and soft. Bread is one of the best foods humans have ever made, and this was an amazing example of it. Across our two dishes, along with the main food, came pickled beets, cabbage, and cucumber pickles, delicious garlicy hummus, creamy tsatsiki, a spicy and tangy sauce with a bite, another sauce with tahini that I couldn't identify, but which was delicious as well. There was even more, and everything was so fresh, so delicious and so clearly made with care. This place 100% deserves the rating it has. Do yourself a favor and check it out, especially in the summer as there's nice patio seating outside.
