I didn't know beforehand that it was privately owned, and I'm sure for liability/insurance purposes they require everyone to sign in before heading up the trails. Speaking of which, there are three different trails. All go up to the top of Mount Trashmore. One is strictly for bicyclists, one that both walkers/runners/bicyclists can use and then there's the short route (or road) that is also the steepest of the three. I chose the last one, and boy they were not kidding on how steep it was. But I made it. You get great views of the city of Cedar Rapids from the top, and they have sitting areas. The chemical smell from nearby was kind of a turn-off, but hey - I guess nothing can be perfect.

I walked into the women's side of the cement slab "building" (no roof or doors) to find two holes in the ground with a seat over each one - no stall doors, sinks, or antibacterial. I like that this beach is only a 20 minute bike ride from where I live (North side of Iowa City) though, and the beach itself is nice and big, with a decent sized swim zone roped off.

Tons of work (besides the play structure) was being done-- like utilities and a new shelter. Month after month my kids would look at their window hoping to see the orange snow fence surrounding the playground work area gone. Alas, it happened during COVID. It was well worth the wait! We have only played on it when we have the run of the place, due to the pandemic. I adore the bright colors and the handicap accessible additions. This park has a picnic area. It boasts trails for running and biking. There is pace for soccer, tee ball, touch football and frisbee. Willow Creek got a much needed facelift and it will continue to be a must-have park for us Westsiders.

There is a…read morelot that you can park in, and then travel down a path to a bunch of informational displays about the flood in 1993 that carved out this gorge, revealing all of the fossils. Then, you proceed down the path into a gorge, keeping an eye out for fossils. I saw a bunch of fossils on the bank to my right, before I even made it to the gorge. There were a few people scattered walking their dogs, although one group was actively looking to spot fossils and had the brochure from the Army Corps of Engineers about the different fossils present. All in all, this was a great spot to spend an hour walking around. I did see evidence that people have poached fossils from here, which is a shame. Look, but don't take!

It was really crowded when we got down to the boat rental area, but the staff on hand did a nice job getting everyone to fill out waivers in advance so we were ready to go when some more boat rentals came in. Overall, the water equipment we rented was in great shape and we had a great time out on the water. Fin and Feather H2O also offers a variety of snacky items you can purchase if you're exhausted when you get back, including Heyn's Ice Cream and some other fryer food options. It's a nice little manmade lake, (pretty shallow) and they do a nice job running this place, which rents out paddle boards, kayaks, peddle boats, and canoes. Highly recommend if you're looking for a way to enjoy the nice weather!
