I've spent twenty years of my life (mostly childhood) in Iowa City and I'm ashamed to say I had never been to the Devonian Fossil Gorge until last weekend. What a treasure! At lease ONE good thing came from the floods of 1993. While deep down, I drove up fully expecting a scene from the beginning of Jurassic Park. With grandiose fossils at an obvious excavation site of some kind... I was pleasantly surprised by what I found. My kids could hop from rock to rock, point at moss and algae in both wonder and disgust ALLLLLL day. The little ecosystems within the gorge are a delight. Plus, the rocks show a glimpse of what the ocean floor resembled something like 375 million years ago. It's a scavenger hunt of sorts with a brochure (and number to call for a tour) leading you around to explore. Although our maiden voyage was less about the fossils and more about exploring our surroundings. My kids and I will without a doubt be back. I could see my three year old's brain working hard and my five year old's smile was undeniable. Who knew rocks could be so fun?!

Echoing the sentiments of some fellow Fossil lovers - this place is legit! On a nice day, there are few better things than getting outside and wandering around, while playing explorer. Everything is accomplished whilst visiting the Fossil Gorge! The place is basically a large ancient river with a limestone base that we're now able to explore and play paleontologist! There are a number of larger fossils that are marked with large numbers. The water is delightfully murky and covered in slime, making for some good searching for frogs and what not. Do be careful however, as the area around is incredibly slippery and we witnessed at least one kiddo fall it. Not life-threatening....just gross! Plenty of parking, a couple drinking fountains (KEY ON THE WAY OUT FOR THIRSTY LITTLE DUDES!) and some lovely signage explaining the area, along with a lovely water feature. A great spot to go explore and get your learn on for a bit.

If you're visiting Iowa City and have some time, pop out to the coralville dam and visit the devonian fossil gorge. The fossils were exposed by significant floods over the coralville dam in 1993 and 2008. It's well worth your time to drive here and spend 90 minutes or so on what is a free and very well marked fossil exhibit.

A fossilized shell found at the gorge.

Great little spot to explore for an hour or two. Brought two kids - 5 and 7. Everyone enjoyed crawling around the rock formations.

Hickory Hill Park has been on my gotta-try list all summer. FINALLY on Labor Day weekend, we found the time to drive across town, to the wayyyyy east side to check it out. LET ME TELL YOU. THIS PARK IS BEAUTIFUL. There's tons of trails for jogging, walking and hiking! From wooded ones, to paths through the prairie. There is something for everyone. Picnic shelters, too. There are a couple reasons this is a four vs five star. 1. There's not a lot of signage on the trails, so it is very easy to get lost or not know where to continue on to! Make sure you have a map online pulled up when you visit. 2. Hickory Hill boasts very, very narrow paths. So during a pandemic-- BRING YOUR MASK! We typically are the family just try to distance when we are hiking outdoors... but distancing is hard on trails at this east side gem.

Never thought that would be me, but sure enough now knowing subzero temperatures have brainwashed me to think 30 degrees is a gorgeous winter day! With this new found appreciation for 30 degree days I packed the pups in the car and headed to check out Hickory Hill Park. What a nice park full of no shortage of multiple winding trails through the woods and prairies. All the trails were very well maintained and were perfect for exploring with our dogs. This is the perfect park if you are just looking to enjoy nature. So want to trail run, walk/hike, stroll with your dog? Then you found the right spot! I also imagine this would be a great spot for snowshoeing or cross country skiing if there was a significant snow fall. It wasn't muddy when we went since the ground was frozen but I imagine if there was recently a lot of rain this place could get pretty muddy.

They have really turned out fabulous with the water in the background. There is ample parking, a little play area for kids and a handful of shelters to enjoy lunch in, or have a party. There is also a lodge and while I have never rented it, I have friends who have and their events turned out great. Bring your family, your dog ... maybe your bike or your workout here and enjoy!

Because oh my gosh, you'll be totally jealous at what the Iowa City kiddos get to play on. Iowa City's largest play area (I'm hard pressed to think of a bigger one) is only two years old and is pure magic. It's got a sensory play center, a net climbing course, a MASSIVE tower with enclosed slide and equipment meant for kiddos ages 2-to-5. There are also shelters, picnic tables, grills, lit baseball/softball fields, tee ball field, tennis courts, a refurbish old fire engine play structure... you name it-- it's got it. Even the indoor aquatic center lives at Mercer, too. There's ample parking and literally kids (and adults?) of all ages will enjoy it.
