For all the naysayers on here and the ones who seem to think they know how the barn burned, please contact the fire department and they will tell you. Yes, there was a water heater to heat the water in the old bathroom. I got hot water out of it many times. Next, I wonder how many of you were up and making sure 50 horses were fed and watered by 6am on all these cold freezes we have had?!?! Nick and Kristine are there every morning and recheck every evening. I went on vacation for a month and came back and my horse looked better than when I left. So B4 you speak badly of someone, know there out there busting their butts to take care of your horse when you don't want to. Don't like his feed, buy your own, don't bitch about it. Go anywhere that has large facilities, you will have the same. Food offered, don't like it but your own. Stop complaining cos horse boarding stables are becoming far and few with what Sugar Creek offers. read more

I boarded at Sugarcreek Ranch for over 15 years the last two years I was there, Nick and Cathy bought the place. Nick was a delight to work with. I never had a problem with him and I'm glad to see that since he has divorced Cathy it looks like this place has turned around immensely. The New Barn is beautiful. The grounds are very well kept. After what I have seen, I would recommend anybody to board there. I boarded my horse at Sugar Creek Ranch for just about 6 months. I wish I would have looked at the reviews but I hadn't. There were multiple issues with the barn. 1. Older lady who lives at the property was always so rude to me. 2. Horses weren't fed enough hay nor grain. 3. Water buckets were filthy. 4. My horse's stall was without a latch for a few weeks because he broke it off. 5. Arena footing was hard and clumpy. 6. Anything extra was a hefty added fee such as extra hay, extra bedding, to put the little amount of hay in a slow feeding hay bag (was an easy to fill one), storage of your own extra hay, turn out, blanketing, and much much more. 7. The barn hours were stupid and they wouldn't allow me to blanket my horse early morning or late night (10pm). 8. Overall facility was run down. Luckily I had moved my horse just a few months prior to the barn burning down. The news of the barn burning down wasn't a big surprise as the barn wasn't taken care of like it should've been. I Boarded at Sugar Creek Ranch and met a wonderful group of women that were wonderful and kind, and always willing to look in on each others horses. That being said, it was a hard place to board at. The owners are very inexperienced in caring for horses. They will charge you for every little thing. The hay they purchase is very poor and supplementing with more hay is necessary. Unfortunately, they expect you just to buy more of their poor hay (that costs 2x what they pay for it). If you bring your own, you will have to pay them to store it for you. The barns are not in the best of shape, and the stall cleaning is done once per day, but the amount of shavings (actually sawdust) was shamelessly miniscule. But you can pay for extra if you want it. If you choose to pay for turnout for 3 hours, the owners do not feel they have to ensure the horses have water. So the boarders need to go and fill the water buckets. The runs have to be maintained by the boarder, and if you have to go out of town, you have to pay their teenage children to muck out the run. This also means that if you want a run without mud or standing water, you will have to pay the owners to put down limestone to build it up. It is not the worst place I have seen, but definitely the worst I have boarded my horse at. read more

If you're considering Sugar Creek to board your horse I STRONGLY suggest you look elsewhere. As you can see from other reviews, Sugar Creek (it's owner in particular) has a reputation for continuously putting the animals under her care, at risk and anytime boarders approach her to ask why she is not providing basic care, she bullies them or threatens to kick them out. We boarded there for 18 mos and in that time we were told that only leaving a few inches of dirty, green water in a shared pasture trough for up to 20 horses was considered "acceptable" in her eyes. My wife was told never to fill up the trough. We have several photos of dirty water in this trough over the course of our time at Sugar Creek. We also mentioned to her that the gate to our horse's pasture had been left open to which she told my wife, "Oh your horse won't go far if she gets out". We also found out while we were out of town that a gelding was allowed in the mare pasture with our horse, resulting in her being kicked and bitten all over her hind quarters, all of which we have documented. This and the fact that when it was recently over 100 degrees for 4 consecutive days, the troughs were again photographed with having only a couple of inches of green, dirty water for our horses to drink out of, were the final straw for us. If you think ours is the only case, ask around about the reputation of this barn and it's owner and you'll quickly find out that the stories are consistent. Unfortunately many boarders here put up with the conditions because of the convenience of the location of the barn to St Louis. Hopefully yours won't be another one to experience how their barn is strictly a business and not about the care of these amazing animals. read more

I stabled at Sugar Creek Ranch for 18 plus months. You will pay more for boarding than just the stabling fee - here's why. And you will also be expected to be seen and not heard by the owners. They purchase cheap and sometimes moldy hay. They told us it is because they cannot find good hay to buy right now - it's too pricy. If you want a healthy horse add extra hay costs to your monthly fee. If you have your horse in the field, you'll have to feed grain, hay, and vitamins as I've found that even though they spray for weeds and plant grass each spring, most of the horses are by no means overweight. If your horse becomes ill, you will be expected to pay double, in some instances. I own a field horse and in order to keep my field spot and stall my horse temporarily for healing, I had to pay for both a stall and the field, plus my vet bills. In addition, I was told I had to pay the owners to give meds - I could not ask a friend to administer them. I was told they want jobs for their teenage children - you will have to trust teens to give drugs to your horse. And, after coming in one morning to find my horse's feed with antibiotics included not given, I started to ask a friend to check and make sure each evening that they were tossed. During the ailment, there were other times they failed to give the feed with drugs. I would highly suggest you visit the stable often as you will have to fit yourself into the "word of mouth" communication process that the owners count on to communicate with the boarders. If they spray the fields and grounds with weed killer or fertilizer, there are no signs posted warning you not to graze your stalled horse or open a gate. Only once did I receive a quick text stating that, "Oh, by the way, I sprayed the front field." I received this text after turning my horse out 30 minutes before...and the owners KNEW and agreed that I could turn my horse out into that field but sprayed anyway without pre-warning. You will also find that their listed open hours, 9am to 9pm, are not adhered to by the owners - but expected of the boarders. Don't be surprised if you go to ride or give meds on a rainy or cold evening before 9pm, you may find your tack room locked, as I did. I attempted to contact the owners. After waiting for 1/2 hour in the chill for a reply, I was told that they closed early because no boarders were there. When I said I was there to administer drugs to my horse, I was told that I had not shared that information with them, so how could they know they had to stay open. My reply was that it really didn't matter why I was there it was 8:30 when I arrived - I could have wanted to ride in the arena, I needed to get into my tack room. It took me 1.5 hours that night to wait for someone to show up and unlock the room so I could give meds. I could go on and on. Each time I brought issues up to the owner, I was given an excuse, usually blaming their barn-hands, or each other. If I brought up the fact that I had proof or someone else saw it done, they would ask who the other person was and calling them a liar. So, knowing all this, you decide if you want your horse to live at their idyllic stable! read more

RUN AWAY AS FAST AS POSSIBLE Went out to see if this could be my new stable for my Horse and encountered a women who was extremely rude and she made it clear it was not her job to help new people she did not know. Turns out she is the owner of the Barn. WOW, so then every new customer is not her problem and its ok to be rude to people you don't know at this Barn. My daughter takes lessons at sugar creek ranch. The horses are well taken care of and the people I've encountered while walking around are very nice and welcoming. This is a large ranch and plenty of option for boarding as well!. I would recommend! read more
