DO NOT go here if you value your natural hair!…read more I am beyond disappointed with the service I received at this Dominican beauty salon. I brought my daughter and myself in for a shampoo and silk press. I specifically chose this salon because it is known for handling natural hair. The first appointment went well--our hair looked silky, smooth, and beautiful. In fact, it lasted longer than usual. At the time, I thought they just did a really good job. However, things quickly took a turn. I am a licensed cosmetologist, and though I no longer work behind the chair, I know hair and I know chemicals. After a couple of weeks, I went to wash my own hair and immediately smelled relaxer. I tried to brush it off, thinking I was overreacting--but as my hair dried, I knew something was wrong. My natural curls were gone in places--one side of my head still had curls, the other side was limp and straight. This is a classic sign of chemical damage. My daughter's hair started shedding too. Her curls are also not the same, and we are both now dealing with severe breakage. It's a well-known concern in the Black hair community that some Dominican salons secretly mix relaxers into shampoos to make the hair easier to press. Let me be clear: this is not only unethical--it's dangerous. At no point was I told a relaxer would be used. There was no consultation, no consent, and more importantly, no neutralizing afterward. Just conditioner and heat styling. This is a recipe for long-term damage, and it shows. To the stylists at this salon: you had no right to alter the structure of my hair or my daughter's without consent. You've caused irreversible damage to our natural hair, and that is not something I take lightly. I am in the process of filing a formal complaint with the State Board, and I am also consulting a lawyer. If this has happened to anyone else, I urge you to speak up. This kind of negligence must be held accountable. Natural hair does not need to be chemically altered to be beautiful or manageable. We came for a silk press--not a secret relaxer. Be cautious and protect your crown. We deserve better.
