sukhothai was always been my GO-TO as my favorite restaurant in all of Winnipeg. A group of us went on Saturday for early dinner, and the meals were good, server was quite good. However, I ordered Rice rolls with Chicken with Peanut sauce to take with me. There was NO sign of Chicken in my Rice Rolls. There was an incredible amount of cilantro though. It was easy enough to pick out of the Rolls. VERY disappointing indeed. pretty expensive, seeing as I paid the extra amount to have the CHICKEN added and they were so plain. My company wasn't impressed either. Maybe there should be a checklist to confirm the customer gets what they order? Hard for me to confirm as I didn't reheat my rice rolls till the next day. Note to self -- Don't order Rice Rolls as a TAKE OUT item, as you likely will be disappointed. read more

I've been to the restaurant in Toronto and really enjoyed the food there, so you can probably guess I had high hopes dining here recently for dinner. Since my friend and I were quite hungry, we shared a rice roll dish to start. $11, 8 pieces, and it came with a satay peanut sauce that tasted delicious. My main dish was a pad thai with level 2 spiciness (my spice tolerance is very low, and level 3 is considered medium according to the server). I've had the pad thai in Sukhothai in Toronto, so I kinda know what to expect...that is if they are the same branch. Unfortunately I found the pad thai here to fall short of expectations. The tamarind flavour wasn't there and I found whatever sauce used to be too sweet. However the quantity was definitely there, as the pad thai stuffed me up and beyond. My girlfriend and I have been eating Thai food together for years. On the recommendation of a friend, we decided to try Sukhothai. One word: awful. Papaya salad is my favorite Thai dish, and it was not fresh, but soggy as if it had been dressed 3 days ago sitting in a plastic tub of its own filth, stewing for days. It was actually impossible to decipher if it was real papaya. Zero fresh herbs were provided, however they kindly threw in a brown, soggy piece of lime. All this for $10. Frankly, they should've paid me for eating it. The next luxurious dish we dove into was chicken pad Thai. It was completely bland, like a normal pad Thai dish that had been rinsed with water. Once again, zero fresh herbs were provided. As for the chicken, it's hard to write a real review considering there were only 3 pieces the size of a quarter. Sukhothai was down to one dish to redeem itself: the shrimp rice wrap. But surprise, surprise, it missed the mark. read more

I was on a road trip from Vancouver to halifax and decided to stop by . Was here at this very restaurant decades ago and I remember the food was quite good . Entered the restaurant through the back door , looks renovated , very nice and open and quite a huge space . Sat down ordered basil chicken , somtum , and rice . When asked about the spice level I asked for medium . I am a foodie and a good connoisseur of Thai cuisine . The somtum did not have any Thai flavours it was bland , no heat as I asked for medium and no sweet and sour taste as well . Fresh lime , palm sugar , fish sauce are the main ingredients besides others but will not get into that at the moment . I always rate a Thai restaurant by ordering pad Thai , Tom yum and somtum, the latter being the easiest to make . The basil ch dish was ok but could have definitely used more basil and chillies to make it more Thai than the subtle Chinese style cooking . All in all food was ok but definitely not as authentic as I was expecting . When the bill came the price was very reasonable for what it was so good value for the money . read more

It would have been nice to have peanut sauce on them before grilling. Shrimp Spring Rolls - were okay. Mango Salad - was pretty good. A tad more spicy that expected. Pad Si Ew - was good. Wow! Sukhothai impressed the heck out of me! Starting off when you walk in the doors and see an elegant decor, the restaurant is larger than it first appears. A nice touch added was they had chilled water in clear wine bottles for our table (instead of those plastic pitchers). Just a simple touch that added elegance. We had a larger group and so our table was in the back. I think this was my first real Thai food experience (not including Thai dishes ordered from other Asian restaurants). Cocktails were surprisingly cheap at only $5 and made with fresh ingredients like mint and berries. THE menus offer a wide range of selections. All of them with your choice of protein or none. It was also nice that you could select your heat level from 1-10. My tastebuds are weak so I opt for no spice. Others opted for heat levels from 3 up to 7. The dishes came out beautifully presented. I had a crispy noodle dish with soya Ginger sauce, veggies and chicken. Other popular dishes at our table were pad Thai and curry. The food was a-mazazing!! The sauces on their dishes just pulled everything together. Noodles were cooked just right. Veggies were still crisp. Everyone at our table raved about their food. You have to cool off the spice burning your tastebuds with an order of Thai ice cream. Vanilla ice cream with coconut milk, covered in mango sauce and drizzled with peanuts. I wanted to lick my bowl clean! What topped off the night was that we had excellent and attentive service at well. I can't wait to go back! read more

Not to brag, but I consider myself to be a fairly decent cook. I also happen to be a huge fan of Thai Food. However when I've attempted to make homemade Thai curries I have to admit to being less than impressed with the results. For that reason, when looking to eat out, more often than not I tend to gravitate towards Thai Cuisine. It's been a number of years now that Sukhothai Restaurant has managed to maintain it's position as one of my three favourite places to go in my home town of Winnipeg when "the craving for spice" strikes. When we go there, we alternate between the different curry dishes offered on the menu and occasionally opt for the Pad Thai. I alway ask for sliced lime and hot chilli oil on the side. My husband always insists that we order their vegetable spring rolls with their delicious peanut sauce to begin our meal and I happily agree with him on that. No disappointments here! Okay, Adrea P. you have convinced me to try the "tom yum soup" on our next visit. One tip: We always ask for the quieter section at the front end of the restaurant. read more

I ordered the masaman curry with level 10 spiciness and it came out mild in spice and temperature. The potatoes were kind of mushy and I don't think I finished it. Sampled some other friends dishes and they were just OK. However, the ambience of the restaurant is mellow and service was fantastic. I came here with a large group for a friends birthday and the server was extremely accommodating about splitting up the bill and not rushing us out at close. Probably wouldn't come back on my own, but would definitely go if someone suggested it since the location is super convenient. read more

This is just really good Thai food. The flavors are slightly distinct from standard Thai in my opinion. For example the green papaya salad emphasized garlic rather than citrus*, and the green curry had a very deep, almost smoky chili flavor and tons of thai basil essence. They certainly don't skimp on the spice, as we ordered our main dishes 7 out of 10 on their scale and it was right where it should be. * note that this might explain the review below where the person did not like the papaya salad. read more

It had the opportunity to eat at Sukothai again this weekend. It was nice to add a few more dishes to this food review. It seems to me that they have expanded the restaurant since the last time I ate there, but I might be wrong. I don't remember the a large back room and new washrooms from last time I ate in. Regardless, the atmosphere of the place is very much business-lunch. I have ordered: Mango Salad - Spice level 1 Green Papaya Salad - Spice level 1 Pad Si Ew - Spice level 6 Pad Thai - Spice level 6 Green Curry Soup - Spice level 4,7 Mat Saman - Spice level 5 Pad Kaeng Puck - Spice level 5 Tom Yum - spice level 4 Spring Rolls - spice level 4 Red Curry Soup - spice level 4 Pad Kiew Wan - spice level 4 Mee Krob - Spice level 4 It is interesting to notice that my spice tolerance has increased in the last 6 months. My favourite dish was the green curry soup (spicy 7), which was just right for me. My favourite dish from this list was the Mat Saman and the green curry soup. My overall rating of the place remains the same. I really love the windows at Sukhothai. They're so big and wide. When you're dining in, you get a panoramic view of the Osborne block. That said, whenever I walk past Sukhothai (which is often), I give goofy faces to the customers dining. There's usually Tinder dates, family gatherings & all kinds of shit going on. You can tell some of those gatherings are pretty important. That's also why I practice my silly walks. Every once in awhile, when it's cold & rainy, I'll have some music on my earbuds and I'm mouth out the lyrics to the greatest song of all time, Killing in The Name of by Rage Against The Machine, bruh. So grandma will be chewing on some mango salad, and there I am, 20 feet away behind a large window pane and her 2nd bottle of chardonnay as I shout "Fuck you, I won't do what you tell me!" She is petrified to the sight of me bouncing to a rap-rock beat. "Fuck you, I won't do what you tell me!" Grandma's bowels are churning. Not just from the spicy pad thai, but from the free entertainment provided from outside. So when passing by Sukhothai, I encourage you to make goofy faces and mouth rap-rock lyrics to the people dining inside. They don't have much eye candy. read more

I am not a huge fan of Thai food but my boyfriend is. He introduced me to this place and to their tom yum soup. Hands down, the best soup I've ever had in my entire life. We drive thirty minutes at least twice a month just to pick up this soup and take it home again. It stays hot and is delicious. The perfect blend of spicy and sour. Everything in it is perfectly fresh. Reasonably priced too! We get two large orders of soup (leftovers are great warmed up too), one chicken and one shrimp plus three orders of steamed rice. We never eat more than half (stuffed) but want the extra for the next day. For this we pay $26. We could easily get away with ordering only one large and still both be stuffed for only $13, we just want that second meal. read more

But once I did I was just as pleased. From what I've observed, they follow impeccable sanitation procedures and keep a perfectly tidy area for you to enjoy your delicious food. The decor incorporates a lovely blend of minimalist wood and traditional Thai themes, creating a wonderful ambience. The food is amazing, they do a great job of using beautiful flavouring in their cooking and you can choose the spice level on a scale from 1-10. I don't have a single negative aspect of the menu as I've tried a dish from every section and have never left unhappy. My sister introduced me to the restaurant years ago, and it's probably still my favourite, but it helps to know your way around the menu. You can pick just how spicy all your food is on a scale of 1-10 and the protein in your entrées. The drinks are fantastic, especially the Thai Iced Tea. My boyfriend and I just went there for our 2nd Anniversary- It was the first restaurant we ever went to together. Our favourite appetizer is their deep fried crab and cream cheese wanton (I can't remember the Thai name) but it's absolutely amazing. The best of the salads I'd have to say is the mango salad. As far as entrées go, I'd stay away from the rices- they're comparatively dull being mostly rice, but pretty much everything else is great-but you will want room for desert- there's only a few, but WOW.
