1 STAR -- AND THAT'S GENEROUS…read more My experience with Hidden Valley Campground was bad enough that I would NEVER recommend this place to anyone looking for a welcoming, well-run campground. The seasonal area is TRASHY. Some of the sites look neglected and give the entire place an embarrassing appearance. For a campground that takes people's money year after year, you would think there would be some pride in how the property is maintained. Activities? HARDLY ANY. And when something actually is planned, in my opinion it feels thrown together at the last minute and completely half-assed. There seems to be very little effort put into actually creating a fun campground atmosphere. One of my BIGGEST concerns is safety. I personally have serious questions about what kind of screening, if any, is being done on seasonal campers -- particularly when it comes to backgrounds that could potentially affect the safety of children and families. If you're bringing children here, I would absolutely ask management directly what their screening policies are instead of assuming anything. There also seemed to be constant drama and distrust among people associated with the campground, including accusations of things going missing and stealing among so-called workers. It creates an atmosphere where you feel like you need to watch your belongings instead of relaxing and enjoying yourself. Management is another disaster. New ownership seems practically NONEXISTENT, while the old management has resigned. From a customer's perspective, it feels like nobody is actually steering the ship. And if you're NEW? GOOD LUCK. This campground did not feel welcoming to newcomers whatsoever. In my experience, if you aren't part of the right clique -- or if you simply choose to mind your own business and stay out of the campground politics -- suddenly the rumor mill starts. I was especially disturbed by what I experienced involving Tina in the office. I had serious concerns about personal information being looked into, gossip being spread, and feeling as though people were being watched rather than treated like paying customers. Whether management considers that acceptable behavior or not, I certainly don't. A campground is supposed to be somewhere families can relax, meet people, enjoy activities and GET AWAY FROM DRAMA. Hidden Valley Campground felt like the exact opposite. Trashy seasonal areas. Poorly executed activities. Serious questions about safety and screening. Drama. Rumors. Clique behavior. Management that seems absent. And an environment that, in my experience, can become extremely uncomfortable if you aren't part of the "right" group. There are WAY too many campgrounds out there to spend your money somewhere that makes you feel unwelcome. I WOULD NOT RETURN, AND I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND IT.

Me and my girlfriend are on vacation and we wanted to give kayaking a try…read more We had a little trouble finding the place because we didn't read the email all the way through but Chase was super helpful in assisting us. When we arrived at the Montour Preserve Chase had our Kayak and life jackets ready and waiting for us and he gave us some helpful insight as to what to expect when we got out into the water. So we headed out into the lake. It was one of the most peaceful experiences ever. We literally had the entire lake to ourselves. As we did our first lap around. We got to see a couple of deer all in separate areas chilling on the edge of the water. They didn't seem to mind us at all. They acted as if we weren't even there. We spent about 2&1/2 hours cruising around. They offer single, double sit on or sit in kayak's and pedal boats if you like. Trust me you definitely want to hit this spot up. It's amazing hands down. When we finally finished we chilled and talked to Chase for a while. He's definitely one of the nicest guys ever and he made our experience that much better. We could've stayed there and talked to him for hours. There's NO question. HEAD THERE NOW IMMEDIATELY AND HAVE A GREAT TIME. BECAUSE WE SURE DID ! We'll l definitely be back numerous times. And we hope to talk to Chase again every time for sure.

I called R.A.C. on rather short notice because me and my husband were going to be in the Danville…read morearea for his 60th birthday weekend and wanted to paddle on the Susquehanna River. We had kayaked a few times before on lakes and in bays, but never before on a river. Since R.A.C. owner Dave was already engaged at a meet on the Saturday we wanted to go out, he put us in the able hands of his assistant, Jim. Jim was a terrific guide. He drove us to a scenic put out area underneath a covered bridge, taught us techniques for paddling more efficiently (which no one ever had), made sure we were safe and comfortable, and even climbed into the water to push us when we got stranded on a rock. (Something that apparently happens in shallow rivers!) We enjoyed a blissful late afternoon and evening paddling 11 mi down river while the sun set. Following our excursion, Jim gave us an excellent recommendation for dinner in Danville (Old Forge Brewery). Here, he and his girlfriend, Emily, came and chatted with us while we waited for our food. We felt like locals! I can't recommend this company enough for value, service, safety, and fun.

The Pine Creek Rail Trail was one of the first rails-to-trails in the area, having been completed…read morein 1996. As its name implies, this was once a rail line and it was built in 1883 to haul timber products and coal. Throughout the years it was operated by various rail companies, the last being Conrail Railroad, which shut it down in 1988. The present trail starts in Jersey Shore, PA and ends just north of Wellsboro, PA. The entire trail is crushed limestone and is an easy ride. The steepest grade is only about 2%. Rick and I began our trip in Jersey Shore at the trailhead. Please note that the address I show above is the approximate address of the trailhead. Some parking is available at the trailhead as are restrooms. We headed west for a few blocks then turned and proceeded northwest while paralleling PA #44. Just northwest of Torbert we crossed the creek for the first time. This was the first of a few creek crossings we did. We passed a portion of WatervilleVillage before skirting the edge of Upper Pine Bottom State Park. You won't find any facilities in the state park, however just beyond is Dry Run Comfort Station. If you need to take a facilities break, here's the place to do it. Now these 'Comfort Stations' are really pit toilets, but they are really clean. The southern portion of the trail has facilities every few miles. We didn't stop at Dry Run Comfort Station, however just north of there we saw the first of several canoe launches. Canoeing and kayaking are very popular here. Once past Jersey Mills Village we began paralleling PA #414. The trail passes through a part of Tiadaghton State Forest here. Tiadaghton State Forest has well over fifty miles of hiking trails in it plus a portion of the 306 mile Mid State Trail, which crosses the state and connects the Maryland border to the West Rim Trail in Tioga county. If we wever get really serious about hiking, me and my girlfriends should come here. We made a rest stop at Cammal Village Comfort Station. I'm a tyoe-1 diabetic and when I do rides like this I have to pay really close attention to my sugars and soemtimes I need a snack break. I should mention that a lot of the geographic names are just points on a map. While this trail has ample pit stops and water pumps, there are almost no places along the trail to obtain food. Just to the east of Cammal Village Comfort Station is Little Pine State Park which also has canoeing, hiking and also camping. Most of the Pine Creek Rail Trail is located in a valley with some pretty good bluffs and slopes on either side. We pressed on and we eventually made our way to Hillborn Hills Comfort Station. This portion of the trail has campsites available for those doing the length. We decided to have our lunch break here. Gotta love good ole PB&J when biking or hiking--especially after it gets warm. And no Skippy for me either! I love the good ol' fashioned stuff where the oil rises to the top and you've gotta stir it before making your sandwich. This was our turnaround point too, being approximately the half way point. The entire trail is 60 miles in length and a one day round trip would have been impossible. And for this portion of the ride, we missed out on the most spectacular part--the remaining miles to Wellsboro. O' but stay tuned my friends, for we did tackle the remainder on another date.

Ever wanted to take a trip to nowhere? If the answer is yes, then dammit, you got a whole lot of…read morenowhere to enjoy at McCalls Dam State Park! A visit here is really only for....?? Locals? Completeists who want to get to everyone of PA's 121 state parks? It's like writing a presidential history report on William Henry Harrison or James A. Garfield. It's like saying that you're favorite baseball player was Eddie Gaedel. Either way there's not much source material. MDSP is only 8 acres (4th smallest for those of you keeping score at home - and you should be keeping score!) and honestly it feels, out of place. The basic Wiki history is that some coot named Johnny McCall started a splash dam in 1850 so that he could power a saw mill. In the late 1860's that dam was rebuilt into a series of splash dams used for floating logs down to Watsontown on the Susquehanna River. While Johnny's splash damns are long gone, somehow he got a state park named after him when the CCC built this place during the early 1930's. Now when I say built this place, that's a very hyperbolic term because there ain't much here. The park in essence is a small gravel pad for a few cars and then across the road you've got a few beat up picnic tables, the White Deer Creek, a rustic shit pit that no doubt dates back to the 1930's and a single trail that goes along the creek a short distance before it randomly just...stops. What you also don't have here would any garbage or recycling so whatever you bring in, you need to take out with you. I assume at one point this place was a part of the surrounding Bald Eagle State Forest and it's 193K+ and then it was eventually splintered off into it's current configuration. There are also several other small and lesser state parks in the vicinity such as Raymond B. Winter, Ravensburg and Sand Bridge. The great band Spinal Tap wrote a song about the little Druids called "Stonehenge". In that epic classic they ask profound questions such as "No one knows who they were or what they were doing?" and "Where are they now and what would they say to us?" My version would be more like, "Who was Johnny McCall and why do we need a park named after him?" "Does this park even matter with how small it is and is there really any reason to even go?" If you want quiet and deserted or if you're mafia and looking for a great place to "make someone disappear", Bingo! You found it here!
