This was absolutely one of the best things we did on our trip to the Finger Lakes. Our tour guide was amazing, kind, and I loved learning about the horses. She had a wealth of knowledge and several degrees in horses related fields. We went on a one hour trail ride and now knowing what I know, I would definitely have upgraded to the 1.5-hour trail ride. It was such a fun experience! I hadn't been on a horse in years and had only ridden a horse maybe three times in my life, so you don't have to be a knowledgeable rider by any means. The horses were so gentle and already knew the route they were taking. If I lived closer, I would have loved to sign up for classes here. What a wonderful experience--my girlfriend (a multiple-time rider) and I (a first timer) decided to take a Spirited Trail Ride while on vacation, and it was amazing! The staff clearly care about their horses--so much information and instructions were given prior to starting, and it was clearly all about the safety and comfort of the people and the horses. It was crucial to us that we picked a place where the horses were the priority, and this place does just that! The trail ride had great views (moving through fields, forests, and waterways), and the staff were communicative both prior to us coming and during the ride. Erica and Taylor made this experience wonderful for our weekend trip from DC. Erica couldn't have picked better horses to match our personalities and her tutorial beforehand was very clear and direct with a hint of humor to ease any nervousness before riding. My partner and I had such a great experience on our private ride with Erika. You can tell that this stable greatly cares about the safety of their horses and the safety and experience of their riders as they ask you to take a short survey to learn about your riding experience, any anxieties, etc. to choose the horse that's best fit for you. I scheduled this activity as a surprise for my partner (who has never ridden a horse before) after our camping trip at Watkins Glen State Park and it was the perfect dose of nature that we needed. I was paired with Dutchess who is magnificent and was described as a horse that "likes to lead and be treated like a queen" (um, SPOT ON for me) and my partner was paired with Hermione who was described as a type A personality (also SPOT ON for her). The trail ride was beautiful and Erika led us through the woods, rolling views of the hills, a creek where we stopped for a sip and photo op, and we even galloped through the fields! My friend and I signed up for a two-hour hilltop boogie ride. we'd both ridden horses growing up, but it has been over a decade, so i was both excited and nervous for the ride. The people here took their time to ensure they matched us up with the right horse based on experience, weight and height. They also made sure to prioritize our safety by one guide being in front of the line, navigating us and one in back, in case any of us straggle behind. They were extremely helpful and patient with our group! You have the option to not wear a helmet but I highly recommend it because some of the tree branches do extend into the riding trails when you head through the forest as well as bugs and dirt throughout ride. My wife and I came to Seneca Lake for our honeymoon and I wanted to do something other than going to wineries (which I've done many times). She recommended going horseback riding and Painted Bar Stables was recommended by the b&b owner. So we jumped onto their website and filled out a form to schedule a ride. The owner Erika emailed me back with a scheduled ride for the following day at noon. Perfect! We got to the barn and met Erika and the trail guide for some basic rules and guidelines (this was my first time). Erika was very nice and had some great analogies (ie election campaign) while explaining how to get the horse to trust you. The one hour trail ride was awesome. I rode Mack and he was a champ (even though he caught me sleeping and grabbed a few snacks for the ride). The scenery was beautiful and the trail wasn't difficult at all for a beginner. We did some hills and obstacles like fallen trees etc. We also got to trot and cantor which was really fun. I took several lessons and did a number of trail rides at Painted Bar last year in preparation for a riding trip to Colorado. Their encouragement and instruction greatly increased my confidence in the saddle and meant a terrific, worry-free trip out west. The care given to the horses at Painted Bar is very evident and they are very careful about choosing the right horse for the rider's ability. For me, the highlight last year was the two-hour trail ride which took us through a variety of trails culminating in a spectacular hilltop view.
