Nothing is perfect, and maybe I'm biased, but it is mostly fine the way it is. Plenty of HBCUs around, such as Hampton University, so the students have great expectations. Since graduating from William and Mary, I have served as a teacher, an administrator, and a board member. One area Summit excels at is student-teacher relationships. Year after year, our graduates leave our doors with extreme gratefulness for the relationships they've established with both their peers and their teachers. Our daughter did not give us all the details until three years later when it came out in counseling. However, she had gone to the principal repeatedly. We initially left because she was having panic attacks, we have since learned the panic attacks were happening because of how unsafe she felt. I have heard that the male student was finally kicked out after two classes of girls came forward refusing to attend Prom with this young man. Only then did the school respond but it was too late for our daughter. We really loved this school but now realize they are not prepared to handle the larger issues in modern days that will continue to come their way. Ignoring problems only hurts people and does irreversible damage.

However, I took a star away due to the availability of concession items. This game took place after work so there was really no time to grab something to eat. Wishful thinking, I thought the concessions would offer something at least to get me through the two games. Oh well, I made it work and was OK. There is plenty of parking here and the ticket line moved pretty swiftly. We were not able to purchase tickets online - this was a cash only event and it helped to have the exact cash. I am not sure how the school is - but congrats to the Varsity Girls Basketball Team for winning the championship! Well deserved. Have fun and enjoy life ;)

Since I placed my child with East End Academy, I have seen a big difference in his behavior. Ms. Eley and her staff have a genuine interest in assisting the students and want to see them grow and become productive adults. Whenever I call or have a concern, they are always available. I appreciate a school that is willing to work with students that the world will often write off as a lost cause.

I went to Smithfield and graduated in 2010. Isle of Wight is a relatively safe area but there were…read morea TON of fights. My freshman year we had locker/car/body searches at least six times. Students were throwing weed on the roof, pushing razors to the ground, and hiding their cigarettes under trash cans. Despite the bad apples there were also good ones. Smithfield was lucky to have a large number of amazing, caring, giving, independent thinking, and honest teachers for their students. The variety of culture these teachers brought to Smithfield was great as a student for me. I enjoyed nearly every one I had and keep in touch with a few over Facebook now that I have graduated. The lunches were honestly okay; they had a sandwich line, home food, pizza line, and international line. The price in Isle of Wight was quite the jump from Portsmouth where I came from.. 2.55 vs 1.25 for lunch. My ABSOLUTE favorite thing about Smithfield was their special education program. Through this program the students enrolled were able to work at the 'Snack shack' where they sold students goodies face to face. That builds social interaction skills, job value, and math with the money handling. They also baked cookies and sold coffee/goods to the teachers during the morning. The teachers would get their items delivered directly to the classroom. Even as a young teen I thought this was an awesome educational tool for those with learning and intellectual disabilities. I hope the program hasn't changed much; Smithfield was lucky in having Ms Gwaltney on their team. I have a learning disabled cousin who really could have benefited from this type of training while in high school. The school was kept pretty clean, bathrooms stocked. Was not a huge fan of the 4-5 minute class change time. The freshmen have general core classes upstairs and have to run across the school to get to their other classes, which can cause them to build up tardies. I believe the school should be more lenient with freshmen and do a checks/balances of their schedule to ensure they aren't zigzagging up and down the stairs and to and from one side of the building to the other. The buses were horrible and bus drivers didn't do much to fix negative situations. There was racial tension on my bus to the point that the Caucasian students had to carpool to and from school because other students were physically beating, bullying, and harassing them every day. The schools did nothing to intervene, punish, or stop it. One case went to court and I had actually began carrying a tape recorder on me that was used as evidence. The studies were very SOL focused which is a shame because there is so much more to education than passing a test. The teachers did what they had to do and I place no blame with them. Overall attending Smithfield High was okay. I would have rather gone here than anywhere else in the area.. except Windsor High; I believe I would have liked it there. I haven't been back since 2012 for my brother's graduation so I am not sure how much it has changed.

Besides the location and staff, the best part about it for me is the dry sauna and the stationary bicycles facing the windows. I'm also super stoked that it became 24 hours starting this month/April...at least the main workout area is. The only cons I've experienced so far are: 1. The showers were only cold water at the time I tried them - but, in all fairness, it was end of a Sunday and lots of kids there. 2. There is only one Hip Abduction & Adduction Machine/Dual Inner/Outer Thigh Machine and someone is always using it. Despite being at the gym for hours, I've never seen it open so I have to use my thigh bands at home. There really needs to be two of them. Many of the machines around it go unused so they could easily be swapped out for a 2nd Dual thigh machine. Otherwise, this place is great and I feel safe when I'm there. Since it is such a nice YMCA, I can see why it gets so busy at certain times. I adjust my workout time when I can to avoid the crowds, but I understand that not everyone can do that.

I work with them individually well also in a group to be able to get them to swim safely. The changing rooms were very nice and quite clean and private, which was really great as well. Everyone was super nice and super welcoming and we really had a great time taking some lessons there. I would join the YMCA if I didn't already belong to another gym though, because it looks like it has a heck of a lot of stuff. Even a climbing wall! And lots of classes and activities too! Might have to look into that sometime soon!

As an educator myself, I could not be more pleased with the educational foundation my children are receiving. During the Covid crisis, the teacher and administration support have been astounding - in addition all of the class meetings, instructional calls, and materials provided, we a offered 1-1 consultations as often as needed. The teachers and administration have given above and beyond to provided support and meet the educational needs of the times. I cannot recommend this school highly enough!
