I just purchased a membership at the Liberty, MO location in April 2026. I thought prior to posting a review about my experience I would reach out to Sun City and let someone know what happened in hopes of someone making this situation right for me or at the very lest respond to my complaint but I have not heard back from anyone so I am posting this review to help warn others of this scam. Be aware if you actually have a problem with the store, the store manager is not able to help you at all. The manager will only direct you to an online chat who apparently is not concerned with client complaints and won't even respond . So basically don't even waste your time. When I purchased my membership in Liberty I specifically told the young lady I just want to get something to use for the month of May for my sons wedding, I wasn't for sure if I should just buy tans or do the membership, the representative told me the best thing for me to do was purchase the membership. I told her several times I just wanted something for one month and she told me to buy the package I purchased . She also told me after my card goes through this one time that I can cancel my membership so I don't get charged again in May. When she signed me up for the membership she just asked me to sign the pen pad , when I asked her for a printed copy so I could read it before signing she told me they don't do that and will just email me my copy. I told her I would like to see what I am signing and she kept saying don't worry about it I will send you an email with everything how we discussed . I again said to her I can cancel anytime after the card goes through this one time and it's just for one month and then I can cancel for May. She assured me that was correct . I asked her if I could cancel right after she ran my card on the day I signed up so I wouldn't have to worry about canceling later and she said , no they need time to process this transaction. After every time I signed the pen pad I asked her again so I can cancel and am not signing up for May, correct ? I was told yes Every time. Well of course after I got home and received a copy of the contract I signed it clearly stated my card would be charged again in May and then after that I could cancel . When I went in today for my tanning session I spoke to the manager, who literally did not even apologize for the miscommunication of her staff member and only directed me to this email. As a customer I feel like I was totally taken advantage of. Maybe the young lady was not trained properly but I specifically asked her several times confirming that my card would only be charged this one time . I think it's a shame she would not give me a printed copy to review prior to signing. All I would have had to do was to be given the opportunity to read it and I would have seen that my card would be charged in April and May. I feel like I was completely taken advantage of and was scammed! No one cares at this place . I would never recommend this business and would go never back!!!!! read more

I previously used services at Sun Tan City, but I moved out of state (to Ohio) in May 2025 and canceled my membership at that time. I even received confirmation that my services were canceled, so I thought everything was taken care of. Fast forward to March 2026--almost a year later--and I was suddenly charged $104 for a monthly membership fee. This was especially concerning because I hadn't been charged anything in the months leading up to that, and I haven't used their services since moving. I reached out to customer service thinking it was an obvious mistake and asked for a refund. Instead of correcting the issue, they offered to put the money on a gift card. I explained that I don't even live in a state where they have locations anymore, so a gift card is completely useless to me. They suggested I give it to a friend or family member--which completely misses the point. This was an unauthorized charge, and I simply wanted my money back. It got even more frustrating from there. They told me I needed to provide proof that I moved out of state before they would even consider issuing a refund. I don't feel like I should have to prove anything when they were the ones who made the error, but I still complied and sent documentation showing I now live in Ohio. They then claimed they couldn't open the attachment and gave me another email to send it to--which bounced back as undeliverable. Since then, I've followed up multiple times with no response. I've now had to open a fraud case with my bank to try to recover my money. This doesn't feel like an "error"--it feels like a shady business practice. Ever since I have been tanning with Sun Tan City Liberty, I have been able to tan with the membership I like and buy lotion when I need. Recently I have been pushed into buying things I do not need by employees and managers. I always politely decline as I do not need any thing at the moment. It is uncomfortable having someone push it onto you when you cannot afford it. This is new for this salon, I hope this can change or everyone will start to feel the same way as I do. No one wants to walk in and get sales pushed onto them when they are simply coming to tan. read more

I tried to go in and buy for the month of February as I am leaving the country and won't be back for a month afterwards. They would not sell me the month of February because I did not come in before January 31. In order to tan there for the month of February I would have to also pay for March. I find this totally ridiculous. I will never step foot into that store again, and I will make sure anyone that asked me will know this as well. she told me I could go ahead and 10 each day if I wanted to, and the price is $40 per tan. She also told me that I should've put my account on hold last year instead of canceling it, I told her I did put it on a hold, that they kept running my credit card month after month. I have been tanning at this salon since fall of 2018. The time to clean a bed and the cleanliness of the salon had seemed to greatly improve over the past few months. But the last few times I have went in to tan it has went back downhill. This evening I had to wait over 30 minutes for a bed to be cleaned, then when I got the to the room I found smudge marks all over the bed and lotion smeared down the side as well on the back of the door and all over the side of the telephone! I left the room and went back to the front counter only to find the line out the door with 1 person helping the customers! This seems to be the norm for this salon. I believe its time for another tanning salon to open up in the Kansas City Liberty Area! A clean tanning salon that can get their customers checked in within a decent timeframe. read more

I have been charged for two months when a lady told me I could give a one month gift of tanning to my sister!!!! Never told me I had to cancel & I am not local. Basically charged $120 for two months!!!!!!! They will not take ownership of the employee mistake!!!!!! I have been tanning at this salon for a little over a month now. The first time I went in, the young lady at the reception desk was very helpful and friendly. I told her that I had never tanned before, let alone been to this particular salon, and she took the time to give me a tour of the place, talk about each different type of tanning bed, and gave me some information on tanning. She had me fill out a skin analysis questionnaire, which I was impressed with. It seems like Sun Tan City is doing things right. The store is always clean and welcoming. I never feel apprehensive about getting into the tanning bed; they place neatly-folded towels and a little sign inside of them that reads, "This bed is clean." Reassuring. The staff is always friendly and lets me know when there are good deals available, or a sale is coming up. If I ever move, I will probably be looking for another Sun Tan City location to continue tanning. read more

The tanning consultants I've met here lack knowledge about how natural bronzers help achieve an even tan. On my most recent visit, I was hugely disappointed with the cleanliness of the salon. Particularly the room I was in was disappointing. The top acrylic had lotion handprints. The paint was peeling off the stool. And the worst was the huge amount of dust on the top of the canopy and on the door frame. I brought this up with the consultant, who took it to her district manager. The district manager explained that she was new and that she would use this as a training opportunity. They asked if there was anything they could do; I told them they could keep the rooms clean. I will finish the package I purchased and return to a tanning salon I know is clean. read more

I was a member at HD Tan before it was bought out by Suntan City over 2 years ago. I cancelled my membership with HD Tan before they were bought out. Suntan City must have bought the client base and have for the last 2 years withdrew $62.99 a month from my account. I contacted the Overland Park store and was told that the charges have stopped and that they will refund the money to me if I would just bring in my bank statements. I brought in 18 months of bank statements because that is all I could get access online. To get the rest I need to go into the bank. They have had my bank records now for 2 weeks and are telling me that they can't figure out where the money is being pulled from. 05/02/2019 another charge has come out of my account. I was told by the client services rep that they are currently working on it. They have look at their own system and tell me that they have no record of me being in their facilities. My advice would be to not offer this company any banking information to them for any kind of membership. This is careless and irresponsible. There is no sense of urgency on their part and I have been told several times that they will call me back and keep me informed. I have not had a single call back from the customer service department. There are several other Mom and Pop tanning facilities in the area. In my opinion I would look into those. read more

I've been tanning with STC for several years now and this is by far the best salon I've tanned at. The facilities are always in pristine condition. The employees are so helpful & friendly. Some of my visits there may be a wait but it's well worth it! (I utilize an online check-in when it's a busy time of the day) This salon has the highest quality of beds with updated bulbs. The employees are always hustling to get beds cleaned and ready for the next client. I never feel pressured to purchase product but when I do want to make a purchase the staff knows their product well and I trust their input on what I'm putting on my skin. I spoke withTaylor today she said she is the store director for the liberty location. I had a auto payment to come out on 04-01-22 for the fastest tanning bed for 87.99 plus tax they took out 109.99. when i spoke with her she said this is a membership fee? i said for one month? she said yes i told her i wasnt told of this if i had know that i was paying 30.00 to tan for the month on top of 87.99 i would have never agreed to this. this is way to much for one month of tanning. when i came in may i wanted to due 1 month of tanning the lady told me i would have to be prorated for may which was about 57.00 then i HAD TO DO ONE AUTO PAYMENT? they took my checking acct info and my credit card info as well. The auto payment would be for april i then said ok she never once said there would be a fee on top of my one month fee. Taylor was very rude to me wouldnt help me at all. All i wanted was a refund for the 30.00 and to be charged my 87.99 plus tax i guess they would rather lose a customer which by the way i have also payed for spray tanning tanning sessions and other deals for various beds and was never charged a membership fee ??? I have visited this salon off and on for the last year and, overall, I have had a good experience. The place is clean and the employees are friendly. The only issues I have had have been with their app. It doesn't work 99% of the time. In order to check in for a session, I have to delete the app each time and sign back in. Its very inconvenient and frustrating to have to do this. I have read the reviews of the app and many others experience the same problems. If it wasn't for this, I would give the establishment a 5 star rating. read more

I had been a member for over 10 yrs. I was paying $85 monthly to tan in the Instant & spray whenever. I originally started at the store on Prairie View Rd. After the closed so abruptly, they were sending members to some tanning salon that sucks over off of 64th st. That wasn't fine. At no time did anyone tell me they were closing or that I COULD DRIVE TO LIBERTY. I accepted that. I really haven't felt as comfortable there yet, but I did get close. I was making money so I would buy the year upfront at a cheaper price than $85 a month, I was buying the newest lotions, primers, & even lotion for my spray tans. I was in an accident which has prevented me from tanning, I go to the Liberty location. I wait in line, finally I'm asked to moved over (I'm using a walker), twenty min later a young woman hands me a post it w/a number on it. She says, "We can't do anything w/the $1,000.00 hold on your account, you'll have to call this number." I call the number only to receive another number where I leave two messages because I want to start tanning. A female says to me, "looks like there was an incident in 2017 and no." We don't want your business anymore." I honestly felt my heart sink. i think now it was betrayal? First of all, why is this, the first time someone who's been with you over ten years, is hearing about it? And like this? You're killing me. Second of all, ............ why now in 2022.? Why have I still continued to be a memer and I must hear from a female on a phone call? I had never once been thanked for being a member - not that I was waiting for it but I was a great customer. I spent like I had it & obviously didn't have complaints because NO ONE NOTICED ME! Finally, is it possible that your business has grown so large, you've forgotten what matters? Ok, so this place is clean. On the flip side, open up your wallet. They offer a "freeze" option for $5 and tell you (even on documentation) that you will be able to use the money for your account once you "unfreeze". I did this very thing, racked up more than $50 in credits, then went to "unfreeze". They then asked for my credit card, I explained that I had enough in credits that they shouldn't need it. They then explained that it was required to "unfreeze" but I wouldn't be charged. I bought it, until I was charged a few days later for another 30 days. I called their customer service, was told they couldn't help me. I found out later, while finishing up my month subscription, that the credit was only for tanning "products". Buyer Beware! read more

Entering the store I was immediately greeted by the consultant, Laura. Laura smiled and welcomed me to Sun Tan City. She asked if I had tanned with Sun Tan City before in which I answered, "no". She inquired about any specific reason I may be tanning and she proceeded to pull out their list of packages, beds, cost, etc. She stepped me through each part of the diagram. Laura then explained the difference between the high-pressure beds (Level 3 or 4) which I expressed interest in. I inquired about the fans in the beds, and at this time Laura showed me several different rooms/beds and how they operate. I was handed a key card and she described the registration process online and how to schedule tans prior to arriving. There seemed to be an issue with my account which required a call to Client Services. They were unable to answer any of her questions which resulted in Laura calling her district manager. I learned at some point Sun Tan City has bought out Tan World. I appeared to have a balance with TanWorld and it was hindering usage of my "New Customer" account with Sun Tan City. After calling her District Manager the issues was immediately resolved. Once I was input into the system Laura asked out lotions. I expressed I didn't want an entire bottle, but I would like a shot or a single tan lotion packet. She took a few off the shelf to describe to me, as well as the bottle of the shelf, so I could smell each lotion and make a decision which I liked best. I expressed hesitantancy about a deep bronzing lotion or a tingle lotion due to the fact I do not tan on a regular basis. She was quick to come up with a solution, showing a new set of lotions, describing 3 different bronzing lotions. Overall, there was a small hold up with the account issue, but the problem was resolved quickly. When I was younger I tanned on a regular basis and I loved the salon I used. After moving 4 hours north and trying out several area salons I was convinced I couldn't find a salon that was equally good or better. Sun Tan City has changed my mind. I've been a loyal Sun Tan City customer for the past 5 years. Of the 7 locations I have used over the years, this is the only location that has been consistently horrible. The customer service here is shockingly bad. The employees are constantly letting people cut others in line. I'm not sure if they are friends with the employees or what, but this is unacceptable and happens way more often than not. I have experienced on multiple occasions 2-3 employees talking to one customer while a line of 7-8 people builds up behind, and none of the employees have the common sense to help the line of people waiting! I can guarantee at LEAST a 10 minute wait before I am checked in every time I visit, not because of long lines, but because the employees lack basic common sense and customer service skills & are often standing around talking to each other rather than helping the customers waiting. After 5 years of using Sun Tan City, I will be taking my business to a different tanning salon when my membership ends next month. And that is all thanks to this specific location. read more

If I could have gave this place zero stars I would have. I have never been somewhere so inconsiderate with the worst customer service. Not the people who check you in and put you in a room. It's and managers or corporate or whoever I talked to. In June they took 200 dollars out of my bank account after I had already cancelled my account with them. They said "unfortunately this happens all the time" but there's nothing really we can do. After I kept asking to talk to someone hiring up we came in agreement I would get half the money back in my bank account and half in a gift card and that it would take up to 10 business days. I waited three weeks and then nothing. So I called again and they apologized and said it would be taken care of and I could get a call in 24-48 hours but this time I would get all my money back and I got nothing still after 3 months. They won't return my calls nothing has been taken care of. And then today. I find that they have AGAIN taken out money for this month, and still have not returned my calls. I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND THIS PLACE TO ANYONE. 300 dollars might not be a lot to them because clearly if it happens all the time it's probably how they make their money. I'm just very upset because I use to recommend this place to everyone, and now all I have is bad things to say. I will no longer being recommending them. read more

Where do I start? I haven't been back to Sun Tan City for a while now but I was thinking about this with the recent heat wave Kansas City has been having and I thought about those poor kids working in the salon. The last time I was there, apparently the A/C was broken and it was WAAAAAYYYYYY TOO HOT! Honestly it felt hotter inside than it did outside, and I couldn't even bear to tan (which is why I was there in the first place because I thought it was too hot to lay out at the pool). The poor kids working were sweating profusely, and they looked as though they were going to pass out! I asked if they got to take extra breaks and some of them just laughed and said that most days they barely have time to even go to the bathroom let alone take a break during their shifts. Is that even legal?! You'd think that with as much as the company makes from their pricey lotions and tanning beds, they could afford some decent air conditioning for their customers not to mention to at least take care of their employees! With a message like that, I'm not sure I want to go back. read more
