I had no idea until this last one (late June 2022) that there were so many quality galleries on the UES. This one was amazing! Most of the tribal art there was aboriginal Australian along with a Korean artist. The curator did a great job explaining the background of the artists and the art itself snd we just had a great time. While a small space, there was so much beautiful works to see. Ellen calls this collection "'ceremony portraits' of what she regards as the derailed and distorted human qualities that determine modern mankind." The gallery says "her work shows ruthless portraits". I think that's going a bit far. I find them direct, perhaps adamant, but they are not more ruthless than those of Xiaogang.

Part of the Smithsonian system, they often have new and interesting exhibitions and, as I've said before, it's less crowded and more laid back. This time there was a piece on sound, it was like a sound bath, and it wasn't my vibe. But what I did find super interesting was the exhibit on production and industrial machines and the people who work on them. I had no idea there were 13 foot tall tires or that one regular man gets inside of them (with the inner rim of the tire coming to his chest) to prepare them for distribution. I thought it was some sort of weird art for a minute, before realizing it was a genuine photograph. I loved seeing all the electronics, large hydraulic systems, weaving apparatuses, and factory settings. It really makes you think about all that goes into making our daily lives livable, that we take for granted. It also had me feeling a true sense of appreciation for the people who do these niche jobs, many of which are a dying craft. This is always a great value. I'm not sure why there are some reviews knocking it. Maybe with today's overstimulation and short attention spans, the vibe is just too chill for them. *shrug*

Came here's on a class trip. It was really nice to see pictures and art work of how things are made…read morein America, or just in general. It did entertain the students because they even had a chance to see beautiful details of pictures from, pencils and hats being made. They had the opportunity to even feel the inside of what a hat is made of and they learned about different kinds of materials. It was a very educational visit to where I would want to return on my own time. The pictures are really beautiful and interesting. They also had a downstairs activity room, where the students made their own little objects. It was a fun trip. Happy Yelping!

Rosen's gallery was located on Prince Street. These days, most of the top galleries like Gagosian and Bonakdar's are located in Chelsea. But I kind of miss the old SoHo days, and the atmosphere in Chelsea is totally different - almost like another world. Most of all, I miss Rosen's SoHo gallery. When I visited, she came out from the back and discussed the artist whose work she was exhibiting at the time, Miguel Calderon. I remember really liking his work. She also simultaneously showed the work of Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle. I read somewhere that Rosen has donated her archives to the Smithsonian's Archives of American Art. And while she no longer appears to have a physical gallery, it seems like she still represents (the estate of) Felix Gonzalez-Torres. Honestly, I wish she would reopen the gallery at some point. Rosen and her perspectives on art were a huge inspiration years ago.

It's very generous--I got a full tour of a fascinating show, "Counter Forms," with works by Tetsumi Kudo, Alina Szapocznikow, Paul Thek and Hannah Wilke, all of whom worked in different parts of them world, died youngish and were forgotten in the 90s but making a comeback now. And they deserve it: weird materials and biomorphic forms, industrail waste and synthetic pigments, intriguing use of slightly sickening colors and textures--a fertile mix of mad-science lab and contemplative poetry that seems to speak to the ways in which artists are dealing with the relationship between bodies and technologies now. Usually Andrea Rosen has a few shows up at once - a big one in the front, medium in the middle, and a selection of works by different artists in the showroom in the far rear, which means you're guaranteed to find SOMEthing to like on any given visit. For 'Counter Forms," however, the whole gallery was devoted to this single group exhibition. But it's definitely worth it! so much to see. There is also a small appendix across the street. I feel like the narrowness of this space makes it slightly awkward. It's smaller than any of the spaces across the street, even the little showroom in the back. I haven't felt really impressed or moved by a show here yet but, it's new so maybe they'll get the hang of it (no pun intended!).

Captivated by the sights and sounds of my earlier years growing up in NYC earlier this May as I was…read moredrawn by the music of my teen hood. I turned the corner onto Orchard St and Grand St, and I was transformed into the 80s by the sight of people dancing and enjoying the community. I thrn saw a mural so reminiscent of my childhood Bronx and Brooklyn and the glorious works of art that just flowed out of doors ajar. The Shin Gallery was having an art exhibition opening unlike I've seen (moved me but I'm just an admirer) and as I walked towards the door the word almost pierced my heart. TIMELESS Words can't express what I saw, how I felt and how much I felt wrapped in an atmosphere of warm memories and in awe all at once. Kool Koor. Took me back and brought me back. Very cool. Thank you Shin Gallery. And thank you for thr Basquiat and Rammellzee paintings as well! So well rounded!

This mid level gallery was very welcoming and peaceful. They allow you to really take in the art…read moresince there are no guardrails. This series is full of raw emotion. Downstairs has some smaller upcoming artists paintings with some nice variety. Overall a great spot to go. The space could have better flow which is why I gave it 4 stars. You lose a bit of the awe when you transition rooms.

I have wanted to see the Museum at Eldridge Street for quite awhile, but it's just never worked out…read morebefore. I booked a guided tour because I enjoy hearing the backstory and history of buildings. We were running 30 minutes late, but luckily we were able to join the already in progress tour. Elaine was a very knowledgeable, enthusiast guide. We learned a lot about Jewish history and the building of the synagogue. Our favorite part was being able to see the inside of the beautiful synagogue. Luckily this treasure was restored and not allowed to fall into disrepair for the benefit of all who are privileged to see it. It's a beautiful look into yesteryear.

Built in the late 1880s by Eastern European immigrants, the Eldridge Street Synagogue was a symbol…read moreof religious freedom for the masses of Jewish people who came to the Lower East Side. About a hundred years later it was renovated to bring the structure back to its former glory; its beauty is undeniable with the focal point being the blue stained-glass window. If detailed interiors are your things, check out the painted arches & ornate woodwork on the balcony that holds the second level of pews. The museum is located on the lower level where the flooring is original to the building. When we went, there was a sizable exhibit of mezuzahs, scrolls placed on the doorpost of a Jewish home. The synagogue is a piece of living history. Its preservation ensures that generations to come can visit & learn the stories of immigration to this neighborhood. Take a docent-led tour or a self-guided one like we did. $15 admission fee, pay what you wish on Mondays & Fridays.
