First of all the food was great. I've been here a few times and normally it's a great environment and the wait staff are awesome, today however my experience turned sour very quickly. The waitress came to our table to take our order and my girlfriend and I wanted to get a few mimosas. My ID expired less than 2 weeks ago and so I showed my FOID card (also a state recognized ID) and the lady was very rude about it. Fine no alcohol for me a grown adult who is 30 years old. Then the waitress each time she comes to the table makes little comments which eventually cause my girlfriend to cry. As I go to pay I decide I want to talk to a manager so I go up front to pay and as I try to ask the lady at the front for a manager the waitress pushes her aside and tells her it's her table and she'll "deal" with me. As I'm paying she decides to make a few more petty comments about how I should have brought an unexpired ID. I can't actually believe that now my girlfriend's favorite cafe is a place she's said she doesn't want to go again and I agree with her. We went on 11/28/25 at about 11-11:30 and sat at table 12. Small college town Cafe - clean, bright, friendly, local. This was recommended by our airbnb host and it was a great way to start the last day of our vacation. SInce a new one of these opened locally (St Louis) we decided to try the one in Carbondale. When we stepped in there was already a line. About 40-50% of the tables were open so I was a bit confused as to why the wait. Then I saw why. When a table that was large enough for our group came open the hostess said let me clean it before you sit. So she started to clean it. Then went back to the register and helped seat another person. Then she came back over and did a bit more. Then back to the register. This happened a few more times. Once we sat down after she put water and coffee cups down she asked for our drinks. None of us wanted coffee so these never been used cups went right in to a bus tray. Why put them out in the first place? Bring them out when coffee or tea is ordered? Also, when you wipe the table with a saturated towel you really need to dry it before seating folks. We used many napkins to do this ourselves. The water and juice were served and we were ready to order. While we waited it was interesting to watch the hostess clean and seat other folks in the same manner as us. Did they not have bus persons? The food came out quickly. It looked good and was good. Everyone was satisfied with what they ordered. From the sandwich, to the omelette, to the yogurt bowl the food was good. There really wasn't anything exceptional about it but nothing was bad. The manager visited a few times and waters were refilled quickly. There was a line again when we got up to check out. Not too long and probably due to new register person. In the meantime the hostess was putting miles on her feet! Oh, and the looks I got taking photos! I told them it was for this review and they relaxed. I didn't hide the fact I was taking photos so it was a bit obvious. In closing, it was OK. The food was good and hopefully after a few more weeks the efficiency of the seating/cleaning will improve. Either that or that poor hostess will need new shoes! read more

Food - The food here is great! There is a cohesive menu which has something for everyone. It's also a good place to try something new due to the quality of the items. Service - I have been upwards of 15 times now, and every time, the servers and hosts were cheery and kind. They rarely (if ever) have gotten anything incorrect on our orders. A few times, we have been abandoned by our server, but I assume it is because of our placement in the far room of the establishment, and I can count these occurrences on one hand. Ambiance - The front room is cozy and refracts the sound in such a way that the noise of the busy room is hardly noticeable. There are two other rooms as well, becoming less nice in quality of atmosphere as you get further from the doorway. The second room is nice and it's next to the main server-kitchen hall. The third room is similar to a miniature cafeteria and echoes easily. In general, I'd heavily recommend trying the place out! My only piece of advice is to avoid the back rooms if you can. read more

I'm a bit surprised at a couple of these reviews as I found this place one of the best breakfast diners ever. It's rare for me to see several healthy breakfast menu options and this place had plenty. Having chicken sausage, Turkey bacon, avocado toast and being willing to use those items in omelets is surprisingly welcome. The place is very clean, sunny as their name suggests and I found the servers quite pleasant and on top of ensuring I was happy after being served. I especially like the coffee top off throughout my BFast. I travel all over the country and it's not common for a breakfast eatery to stand out to me. I had the corned beef hash, 2 perfectly cooked over-medium eggs and an English muffin. Was it the healthiest thing I could have ordered? Nope. Was it homemade and delish? You Bet! I was here a few weeks ago visiting my brother and my entire family (5 people) stopped in for breakfast on Sunday morning. The food itself was outstanding and the only reason I am not at 5 stars was lack of service. Service itself was not bad I simply wasn't overly impressed. Everyone was nice and this was just after post-Covid outside reopening started so I get it. I had the Breakfast Tacos with Hash Browns & Blueberry Muffin. The orange juice, however, was great. The poached eggs on my bene were not done with just as much white running around my plate as yolk. We were seated immediately, server was promptly pouring us water and asking how many coffees we wanted at the table. From the street it was nondescript, but it was so much more than good enough. We had berry pancakes and cinnamon pancakes. They were both fantastic! Arguably, they were the best we have ever had.
