Small college town Cafe - clean, bright, friendly, local. This was recommended by our airbnb host and it was a great way to start the last day of our vacation. Our server was great, friendly and willing to chat with us. Food was delivered promptly and was of good quality. We split the corned beef hash and a cinnamon roll and it was plenty to start another long day in the car.

SInce a new one of these opened locally (St Louis) we decided to try the one in Carbondale. When we stepped in there was already a line. About 40-50% of the tables were open so I was a bit confused as to why the wait. Then I saw why. When a table that was large enough for our group came open the hostess said let me clean it before you sit. So she started to clean it. Then went back to the register and helped seat another person. Then she came back over and did a bit more. Then back to the register. This happened a few more times. Once we sat down after she put water and coffee cups down she asked for our drinks. None of us wanted coffee so these never been used cups went right in to a bus tray. Why put them out in the first place? Bring them out when coffee or tea is ordered? Also, when you wipe the table with a saturated towel you really need to dry it before seating folks. We used many napkins to do this ourselves. The water and juice were served and we were ready to order. While we waited it was interesting to watch the hostess clean and seat other folks in the same manner as us. Did they not have bus persons? The food came out quickly. It looked good and was good. Everyone was satisfied with what they ordered. From the sandwich, to the omelette, to the yogurt bowl the food was good. There really wasn't anything exceptional about it but nothing was bad. The manager visited a few times and waters were refilled quickly. There was a line again when we got up to check out. Not too long and probably due to new register person. In the meantime the hostess was putting miles on her feet! Oh, and the looks I got taking photos! I told them it was for this review and they relaxed. I didn't hide the fact I was taking photos so it was a bit obvious. In closing, it was OK. The food was good and hopefully after a few more weeks the efficiency of the seating/cleaning will improve. Either that or that poor hostess will need new shoes!

I was interested in trying their baked treats, and upon my visit, I found exactly what I wanted to get. The menu variety was good. They offer cookies, pastries, breakfast meals, lunch meals like sandwiches, etc. The pricing was reasonable. I got a Pink Cookie (Southern IL specialty), a Chocolate Chunk Walnut cookie, a Date Walnut cookie, something called an Orange Chipper (a type of cookie), as well as an Italian sandwich (called Bakery Sub on the menu). The Date Walnut cookie was my top favorite. It was soft and also crunchy where the walnuts were. The Orange Chipper was my next favorite, followed by the Pink Cookie (iced frosting shortbread cookie). The sandwich was loaded and had a good flavor. The deli meats (ham, and salami) were fresh. The service was good. This was a gem of a find for me and I would go back there again when visiting Carbondale. Definitely recommended.

I got a you-pick-two with red pepper soup and a strawberry salad. While I was deciding, my eyes wandered over to the baked goods (this is absolutely a trend with me) and I saw a peanut butter pretzel cookie....whaaaaat? No way this wasn't going in my belly! Then I glanced over to the drink case and I saw....Topo Chico! In Murphysville, IL?!? This place stands out for curating the best in a small town. Now I'm really excited for my lunch! And it did not disappoint. The red pepper soup was roasty and hearty, definitely a good choice for this chilly weather. And the strawberry salad was fresh and refreshing. Does that make sense? The ingredients were so fresh and crisp - sweet strawberries in January I'd no small feat! - but it was light and hit the perfect note as an accompaniment to the red pepper soup. And that cookie? Do I even need to tell you how delicious it was? I didn't even offer my friend a bite. I ate the whole thing and I'm not ashamed. So good! A delicious lunch and nice respite in a small Illinois town. Worth going out of your way, for sure!

The roast beef savory crepe is also tasty -- though a little light on meat. In terms of the milk tea, it is passable. The tapioca pearls are cooked properly, but the tea itself is nothing special. Prices aren't that bad either even with it being one of the nicer restaurants around here. The crepes can be meaty or vegetarian among the many options. Basically this place is all staffed by SIU students with it being close to the campus. It's a scenario that seems like a recipe for disaster. That's not the case entirely. Can be a bit of a wait of course. The menu isn't that big, so it helps keep things running smoother. It's about $5 for a crepe. They have savory and sweet. Among the savory ones, we tried the mushroom. These were good and light enough that we didn't get filled up. For dessert you can get sweet ones. These include fruit fillings and whipped cream on top. Good place for tea and crepes. It's located on University Avenue at Mill Street. They frequently close for school events and vacations.
