I haven't reviewed Gustafson's?…read more Giving credit where credit is due, this was another Jane & Michael Stern find from the 2005 update of their classic book Roadfood. Man, do your remember travel books? If you find one in a used book store, pick it up. The classics stay classic. And speaking of the classics, Gustafson's is the real deal. Roadside gas station with a handful of smokers to transform the bounty of the great lakes into delicious succulent morsels of delight. If you don't know, I have what I affectionately call a fat-tooth. And the fish that swim in those frigid fresh water lakes develop such beautiful and silky fat. The lake trout especially! Gustafson's isn't fancy. Walking in the door you may ask yourself, "This is it?". But when you tear open your pouch of smoked lake trout, and pull the meat off the bones with your fingers, with a little of that fat dripping down your arm and chin, you'll say to yourself, "Yeah, this is it." This is a required stop anytime I'm up in the UP. Last visit they were out of the whitefish, but so it goes. And looking back on the listing in Roadfood, the Sterns mentioned seeing smoked menominee in the case, but I've never noticed it before. I'll have to ask next time I'm up. Sure, you can get the salmon. I imagine it's delicious. The Gustafson's crew are great at smoking and salmon takes smoke well. But I say go for the local stuff. Get out of your comfort zone and buy a whole whitefish. Don't fret about heads and bones. Don't worry that you won't finish it (there is a bunch of negative space inside, they aren't as big as they look). You've got this. I believe in you!

So off we go and the first thing I notice is this place has a fair number of gas pumps. Clearly, there was no turning away from the fact that this is going to be fried chicken from a gas station. We walk in and it's a typical mini mart. Candy, soft drinks, beer, chips, you know the classics. But then I looked to my left. Tucked away in the far reaches of this place , far away from the Dorritos, was a warm spirit of a woman standing behind a hot area of golden fried chicken. Was I dreaming? A muliple line gas station housing the sweet smell of fried wonderfulness? I was expecting us to go up to her and order so much chicken that she surely would not be able to handle. People don't walk in here and buy chicken for six. People are coming here and buying chicken for one to eat in their car on the side of the road. But to my amazement, my friend had ordered ahead of time and this warm angel picked up a large to-go bag with multitudes of drums and breasts, fried up in some secret gas station chicken recipe, and handed it to us. Was this actually happening? At home at dinner I was expecting to eat a small drum and thigh. I put extra apple sauce on the side for security. And then I tasted this gas station chicken. It was crispy and seasoned just right. I went back for more. Everyone did.

Went in to find out what to do, Followed out by employee Lisa. When got out to pump, Lisa comments were as if I was responsible for pump not pumping. Then Lisa tried it. Pump did not work. She asked if I wanted to try another pump. I declined (because of her attitude). Lisa said she would put a bag on the pump. Yes I agree that she needed a bag. Went to Shell and got great service and needed gas. Will not go back to Holiday with lack of Holiday by employee.

It's not what you find in the big city, not at all, but you should not expect that. Drummond Island is a remote location, with only about 1,200 year-round residents and maybe 3,000 at the height of tourist season. This store does it's best to be all things to all people. What can you get at Wazz's? Gasoline. Alcohol. Carry-out chicken and sandwiches. Groceries. Hardware. Lottery. And probably a few more things that I didn't notice while I was walking around, stunned that they could pack such a wide variety of things into such a small space. Definitely worth a stop if you're on Drummond. Just beware - everything costs more on an island. A bottle of wine that costs $8.00 in a big city, or on the lower peninsula, costs $11.00 here. That's just the way things are when you're Up North.

They only sell their beer in the U.P. and N. Wisconsin. This station had not only the common varieties, such as the delicious UPA, but the special limited editions as well (one with 10.1% alcohol). I wish I had bought them here, as the Holiday in St. Ignace had no limited editions just UPA and Lager.
