Upon entering I was greeted by the general manager who gave me a quick tour and told me all about how our lesson would go. There are several dressing rooms, cubbies to keep belongings while in the lesson, disposable wet bags, and a little play area for kids waiting for their turn for a lesson. The pools are separated into lanes based on a child's class level. The entry way/seating area for parents and the pool is separated by glass so parents can watch with ease while not being in the pool area. My child was in the youngest baby class since this was his first lesson and therefore I was required to get into the pool with him. We had a great time and he had a great first lesson. His teacher was kind and kept things moving on a tight schedule, but there was still time to accomplish everything necessary for the lesson. I was impressed by the scheduling and promptness of the lessons so that kids were in and out on time for the next class. During the lesson my child was taught to put a "balloon" in his mouth (hold his breath) and to blow bubbles in the water. He was taught safe ways to enter and exit the pool. Parents were taught various holds that would allow for their child to explore the water in safe ways. Kids were encouraged to begin learning how to float on their backs, how to get to the wall and hold on, and were taught very introductory swimming, by pushing off from the wall with the help of a parent. After the lesson we were able to get out, rinse out in the shower that's right off the pool (soap dispensers have baby shampoo/wash in them), and then make our way to the dressing room to change. My son loved every minute and we are excited to come back! The pool and pool room were very comfortably warm which made getting into the pool easy. Leaving the pool into the changing area was freezing though. Haha! Overall a great experience and so glad to have a swim school closer to home!

That said, there are a few issues that genuinely detract from the experience. First, the dress code. I was asked to get off a treadmill mid-workout because my midriff was showing. I wasn't aware this was against the rules. I wear standard gym attire and don't typically comb through fine-print dress codes, so being stopped in the middle of a workout felt unnecessary and frankly frustrating. I disagree with this policy and think it's worth reconsidering. Second, the app is extremely inefficient. To check children into childcare, you're required to sign out and back into the app, which is inconvenient on its own. Combined with the fact that there's little to no cell service in the building, it becomes a real hassle rather than a helpful tool. Lastly, the amenities are unreliable. The hot tub and sauna are frequently out of service due to maintenance. At this point, it feels more like the expectation than the exception. Overall, the gym has strong potential and some real positives, but these policies and operational issues make it difficult to fully enjoy or justify.

Fast forward to 2020 . . . rumours about a private investment group of former Healthtrax members purchasing the club, remodeling it, and re-opening (During COVID19 times too (Opening a health club during a pandemic = BALLSY)). I waited a while before coming back (after getting vaccinated), but as soon as I walked into the door . . . I felt like being at home . . . the place is better than I remember it (and cleaner). I enjoy the pool, racquetball court, and gym. Everything is brand new and everything is clean. The wi-fi is strong, and they even have a hi-tech app. for my phone, so I can reserve a court, or sign up for a class. It even tracks my workouts if I choose. The only thing this place is missing, are the swimming suit spinners to dry your wet bathing suit (Healthtrax ripped them out when they left). Very happy I rejoined (And I qualify for a Veteran discount too) . . . Cheers! P.S. Speaking of Hi-Tech, the pool was down for unexpected maintenance yesterday, and I got a notification on the app. saying, so, as well as an e-mail and an app/ message telling me that it opened back up later in the evening. Many times in the past at Healthtrax, I got to the club in the morning, only to find out the pool was closed, but now I know in advance . . . that's awesome!

I stopped in today, took a tour of the facility, and joined. The place is a lot smaller than H-Trax, and doesn't have as many amenities, but it is very clean, and the employees are friendly. All three of my children (ages 4, 7, and 12) take lessons here, and my two youngest started at Goldfish as soon as they were able--at just 4 months old. Goldfish has truly been part of our family for most of their lives. My two oldest are now in Swim Force, their highest level, where they swim the length of the pool instead of the width--a fantastic introduction to swim teams and more advanced swimming. The instructors are wonderful with children and focus on the specific skills each child needs to move up. Class sizes are very manageable, so kids receive meaningful instruction and individual attention. Goldfish has quite literally watched my kids grow up, and I love knowing they are learning important life skills in such a positive, encouraging environment. The instructors were great with my son, sang songs, and made it really fun for him. Most importantly, there were a ton of lifeguards and instructors in and around the pool. They have changing rooms, hair dryers, a swimsuit dryer, snack shop, and retail store.
