Call up your lady friends, your man friends, your work friends, your hire-a-friends and make a date…read moreto visit South Press for an evening of wine in the sunshine. Better yet, stop working right now and head on over! On entering South Press you're greeted with a dark interior and simple fitout, with wine for purchase either to take home or "drink here", a long bar and a selection of cosy tables in the front and high tables in the back. The real magic happens when you venture outside though. Out the back are tables set up in a courtyard surrounded by greenery and it's here that you can pretend you're on a European vacation while you smash back wine from around the world. The wine list is really rather well priced, with most options by the glass well under $15. The best bit? There's FOUR sparkling options available by the glass ranging from the local (think: King Valley) to the fancy-pants (think: Champagne) which means you can stick on bubbly all night long and still enjoy some variety. When it comes to food, the menu is simple and straightforward with most items cured or preserved in some way. Beef Jerky (from co-owner Adam North's tasty cows), chicken liver parfait (in the most GIGANTIC and artery challenging portion you've ever seen), smoked octopus tentacle (served barbarian style with a knife stabbed in on a wooden block), olives, terrine, cheese and pickled vegetables. It's great drinking food and perfect for sharing, and while some people might hunger for something more "meal-like", I'm very content having a meal made up of small plates and went home happily after splitting a few dishes with my favourite +1

Sometimes kicking on doesn't go that well, but they handled our merry behaviour extremely well here. We were happy and pleasant as always but probably a bit loudish at times. No matter. We moved steadily through some nice wines. Water was kept up nicely as well. The chap with the German heritage here handled us wonderfully throughout with calm professionalism and very good humour. He is a serious superstar. Nice interlude. I think lunch finished around 9.30pm!

Service was friendly however it was apparent that staff were quite inexperienced with both the drink and food menus. The bartender admitted to not ever making one of their special cocktails and the long wait for our two drinks which arrived separately was not encouraging. Another person took our food orders very slowly and had to stare quite awhile at each item we chose. It was as if it were her first day. Food was a bit slow to arrive as it came all at once rather than as each dish was ready, and we had a few things to share. The food itself was good but not great. Oyster Kilpatrick had a bit too much barbecue sauce for my taste. The jalapeño poppers were ok but didn't come with the traditional cream cheese filling. I did enjoy the scallop skewers from the specials menu. They paired well with the tomato dipping sauce. Lastly the lamb souvlaki was more of a wrap than anticipated. It was good but didn't blow me away. Overall I think they need to refine their approach. While their friendly banter was better than a cold welcome, they need to brush up on their technical skills to really bring this place to the next level.

The tall bartender who admitted to being inexperienced in making a not so virgin Mary or as my friend commented he was a virgin at making a not so virgin Mary did a not so spectacular job at making the cocktail. I couldn't taste any alcohol. Just tomato juice. My friends cocktail was quite delicious with summery hints of pineapple and lemon. We got jalapeno poppers, scallops with tomato sugo sauce and lamb soulvakis to share. The three scallops on each skewer tasted like scallops and didn't go with the pasta like sauce that they were served with. The jalapeno poppers weren't spicy and needed a creamy chipotle sauce not coarse chunky guacamole that fell right off. The lamb souvlaki was delicious with tender pulled lamb and yoghurt with the sour pomegranate sauce, but there just wasn't enough of this awesome sauce. The waitstaff asked us repeatedly whether our meals and drinks were ok. Yes they were friendly but they seemed very inexperienced. And the wait for the food was so long. after 10 minutes of arriving there, we were the only table there. So I didn't really understand why the drinks took so long and why the food came out all at once. This place could be awesome. just needs better service and perhaps balanced flavours. 80 bucks for two with drinks.

Since we had our minds set on the paella, we each ordered one anyway. I got the daily special with sausage, scallops and pumpkin while she opted for the lamb. Having sampled both, I can say with certainty that they know their paella! The lamb paella was tender and flavourful, a good sign that the meat had been simmering to soften and flavour it, along with the rice. The scallop paella was just delightful, having the right blend of spices, a bit of surf and turf to flavour the rice, along with well blended pumpkin. It was hearty and filling. Both dishes were served on small paella pans and were well presented. In addition, the sangrias we sipped were fruity and refreshing. The staff was friendly, checking in on us more than once, topping off our water and clearing our table. It's true we beat the lunch rush so enjoyed the extra attention. This is one place where coming later still ensures you get a delicious meal, as the paella is a great dish that soaks in more flavour the longer on the grill. Come here for a fantastic lunch or sample their happy hour menu from 3-6pm. With a great location and tasty dishes, it is simply delicious.

Since opening I have been for a set menu lunch with workmates and a couple of lunches by myself, not to mention a couple of happy hours on Thursday and Friday evenings. All food has been wonderfully satisfying and very affordable for tapas offerings. Their sangria is to die for and I can't go past the deep fried goats cheese croquette. Go there and you won't be disappointed!
