Brilliant service and fantastic Mexican/Southern food. The soft shell crab and sweet corn and prawn dishes were just divine.

Etes-vous un amoureux de la cuisine française? (Are you a lover of French cuisine?) Then look no…read morefurther than A La Bouffe. The staff at this tremendous French Bistro have managed to really capture the essence of French dining and cooking and made it all available to patrons on Toorak Road. Upon walking through the doors of A La Bouffe you are greeted by a large marble bar downstairs and private more intimate seating upstairs. The whole venue is very elegant and light making for a classy and relaxing atmosphere. I came to A La Bouffe for dinner and was thoroughly impressed; I ordered the Salade De Saumon Fume as entree. This was Smoked Salmon Salad with a Citrus and Dill dressing; very light, fragrant and not to mention tasty. For my main I decided on the Coq Au Vin - Boneless chicken marinated red wine, mushroom and bacon sauce with mash potatoes on the side. Terrific! Washed it all down with a very smooth glass of Shiraz, needless to say I slept like a baby after this meal. A La Bouffe is a perfect French dining experience right in the heart of South Yarra, perfect for lunch or dinner or even a cheeky glass of vins rouge.

There's also parking at the Como across the street, which is pretty handy. Walking in, you can't help but feel drawn into this relaxing and intimate atmosphere. It's perfect for a date (well a very expensive date!) or to enjoy a beautiful dinner service with close friends. I loved it from the moment I walked past the front door. The bar is also a nice touch and it gives you the option of grabbing a seat and having a drink while waiting for your table if it's busy. The staff are amazing, the ones who looked after us were all French which contributed to the whole experience. They are really nice, welcoming and took time in running us through the menu as well as the wine list. Seriously, everything on the menu looks good. We had the escargot and terrine for entree and they were really nice. For the main, we went with the lobster ravioli et crevette and the coq au vin - wow! Just wow! We were quite full after that but, credit to us, we soldiered on and had the mousse au chocolat and creme brulee a la lavende - Oh mon dieu...... C'etait pas croyable! It was as orgasmic as you'd get..... We had such a great time and were the last ones to leave I think but they never pressured us to go and were very accomodating all the way. This place is a must-try! I will definitely return and I can't wait to go back. Make sure you book first - great places like this fill up pretty quickly.

They also have XXL versions of the St Helen and premium ones (like a Miyami breed from Tasmania?) for a bit more. Long high tables right at the store to slurp them. Or bring them to the food court for sit down tables. They also have sea urchin sometimes; $14 for a whole sea urchin, already half shelled and prepared to eat ASAP. Why only 4 stars? There's an…read moreoutdoor seating area which is pretty cosy (even if it's not a super warm night), the menu is interesting and I enjoyed the food. We had a booking but the place wasn't really that busy - they have happy hour from 5-7pm so I think the place had emptied out after that. The menu has a section called "The Bucket List" which is a bit weird, everything is sold in grams (e.g. you can choose between a 150g or 300g portion) and you feel a bit like you need to order a few things to build up a whole meal. I went for the lemon butter prawns (300g) as well as some Asian slaw. The food arrived but not quite at the same time so there was a little bit of an awkward wait but nothing too dramatic. My prawns arrived as a 150g portion as there'd been a mix up but another 150g arrived not long after which was good. Overall, I really liked the prawns - perfectly cooked, nice and juicy and lots of the cooking sauce to dip bread into. The Asian slaw was ok - it was definitely missing something to make it remarkable. Service was a little mixed and there seemed to be a weird dynamic going on between our waitress and the manager - I'm not sure if the waitress was on trial but it seemed like the manager was checking up on her. No big deal. Overall, I liked this place and from looking at their website it seems like brunch/lunch is their thing more than dinner, so I would consider heading back for that next time I'm in Melbourne.

We dropped in on a late Saturday evening (around 8:00pm). It was busy with most customers getting takeout to go. They were a bit slow getting our order cooked but c'est la vie. Menu is up on the walls. You can also order seafood to cook at home. There's a couple combinations to choose from but it's mostly fish and chips. - Seafood delight pack ($28.00 AUD) - 2 fish of the day, chips, 2 prawns, 2 calamari, 2 potato cakes, salad, lemon and tartar. The best thing was the fish; fresh, flaky and nicely battered. The rest was really salty, greasy and soggy. The fries had an unpleasant dry texture. The salad was unremarkable (I can make a better one at home) but at least you get something healthy to counter all the grease. The calamari was dry and chewy. Potato cakes needed some seasoning. The prawns were decent. Also bizarre is that they make their own tartar sauces but didn't give us any to try. Instead, we got two squeeze packets of cheap quality tartar. Would not come back. Ever.

More of Australia's ocean bounty done right…read more Note: Australians take great pride in taking all seafood from sustainable fisheries predicated on responsible management. Part retail fish market, part casual eatery and known for incredibly fresh, gigantic hot and cold combo seafood platters and for the adventurous, do it yourself selections. Great selection of uber fresh, creamy Sydney rock oysters and a crisper, "cucumber" like flavor of Tasmanian selections, perfect natural with their house sweet chili, lime, ginger sauce whose acidic grip makes the clean oceanic flavor shine. The Harvey Bay scallops just cooked through, with a yielding texture, the candy of the sea. Served with a cauliflower puree that is not necessary but adds to the richness. A simple pot of very plump mussels in a creamy white wine sauce also satisfying. Do not pass up the Moreton Bay bugs. Very fresh, tails split and grilled with a lemon butter, good eats. Grilling amplifies the oceanic flavor while the lemon butter adds richness to the tender tails. A crayfish in creamy, cheesy, monray sauce also a great way to enjoy Australia's crustaceans. The flavor of the barely cooked through tail meat is kicked up with the addition of an intense lobster / seafood stock to the monray sauce. Finally fish, lots on offer but do not miss the chance to try the deep sea, Antarctic Glacier 51 toothfish. Large, oily, dense, white flakes with incredible clean, sweet flavor similar but more intense than a cross between scallop and monkfish. Sublime when simply grilled. Fish dishes do come with two sides but those are completely unnecessary. Efficient, friendly though abrupt service. All good as you get your food. While there are probably even better places to indulge on Australian seafood, as a visitor with limited time, Richmond Oysters delivers in spades.
