This property is not a 3.7 on a scale of 5, more like 1.7. Totally old and degrading from an appearance and maintenance. Our unit had torn carpeting, and a bathroom door that would not close for privacy. The only positive point is the view of the lake. read more

I took a spur of the moment trip to the UP, and was super lucky to find one room available in the entire UP - at this hotel. I was pleasantly surprised at how nice it was when I arrived. My room was huge - basically an apartment - and it had an incredible view of the bay and downtown Munising. I could easily live there, right in that room, haha. Check in was easy, and the girl at the desk - Micky - was very friendly and helpful. She even came to my room to help me with the TV (user error - the TV was fine). The room was very clean and quiet, and the hotel is conveniently located to Pictured Rocks and Grand Marais. I'll definitely stay here again the next time I'm up that way. I would have stayed another night, but unfortunately they were completely booked (like everywhere else in the UP). I'll be back :) read more

We visited Michigan for our family summer vacation in 2019, spending much of our time in the UP / Upper Peninsula. We knew we wanted to visit Munising as some co-workers recommended it. We planned to stay at the Holiday Inn but they only had one room and we needed two. The same family also owns another hotel, and also some lakefront homes. It turned out we could rent the two-story Sunset Cabin, with kitchen and laundry, for less than the price of two rooms at either motel - great deal! The Sunset Motel' motel rooms face the water and the sunset. The short street from the main road to these rooms has 5-6 houses on it, three of which are the cabins owned by the Sunset Motel. While you can't see Lake Superior from inside, you need only take three steps from the front door and turn left to see Lake Superior. So nice. The staff was incredibly friendly and helpful, pointing us to Seaberg Pontoon rentals so we could pilot our own boat on Lake Superior, and they helped us find four waterfalls within a few minutes of the property. While this is not a fancy cabin, it is cozy and has character... the floors squeak in a charming way. Downstairs: kitchen, laundry, dining and family rooms (with TV & DVD), and the bathroom. Upstairs: three bedrooms There is a deck on the back of the house with a back yard, too. And take ~ 100 steps and your can put your toes in Gitche Gumee Thank you, Sunset Motel, for being such friendly hosts with a great cabin! read more

Good setting and good price. Extremely outdated and almost run down. Seems like a family ran place that just quit caring about their place.

The motel was a big disappointment. While the view was fantastic, the room was not clean. There was mold and peeling paint in the bathroom. The bottom of the tub was filthy and there was a clear ring around the toilet bowl. I question whether the room was cleaned at all prior to our arrival. For the price paid, the room should have been tidy. We complained during check-out, but there was no response other than a note taken down on a post-it. read more

We just returned from staying in the brown house here. We (and members of our family) have stayed at this motel periodically over the last 15-20 years and this will be our last time. Let me start with the pros because it's a short list. Pros: -the sunsets are very nice to view here. Cons: -I always check the beds first thing. Well, all 3 beds had a gross amount of hair and dirt on the sheets as well as indentations from where people laid!! THEY DID NOT EVEN CHANGE THE BEDDING!!!! We arrived in the evening and had to wash all the bedding before we could go to bed that night. -the house was very dirty when we arrived. Carpets did not appear vacuumed (I dropped something and when picking it up it was covered in cobwebs) -speaking of cobwebs, they were everywhere....I mean everywhere! I don't think they cleaned before opening the house for the season! We literally had a spider on our breakfast plate, in our purse, in the kitchen sink multiple times, in the bed. -the toilet started leaking across the floor and wasn't flushing properly. We had maintenance come look at it. He tried to tell us it was condensation. Um, no. He ended up needing to change the O ring. -the bathroom sink was draining extremely slowly. We went to the front desk to let them know and the lady working asked if we tried plunging it! Um, not our job!!! They never fixed it. -shower had black mold all the way around it (photo) -the porch furniture was dirty -living room furniture....well, by this point I decided not to sit on anything with fabric. It is very dated and didn't look clean so I sat on the hard dining room chairs all week. -Kitchen drawer fronts literally fell off when opening them. I know this is a long review but I want you to know what you're getting into if you're looking at staying here. The views were as advertised. The staff was less than interested. The bed was hard, it crunched when you moved. Would be ok if you got in late and needed a spot to sleep. We stayed 2 nights, there is no comfortable place to sit in the room. It was too cold to sit on the deck outside. Breakfast was prepackaged, nothing fresh or hot. Last weekend we were up north for a backpacking trip, but after a few days of being rained on and frozen in a tent, we caved and decided it was time to get a room. Trying to keep our camping trip affordable, we struck out with some of the bigger named hotels in munising. The good reviews for Sunset motel stood out to me, so we decided to give it a shot and it was great! The motel itself isn't 5 stars per se, but the experience was! We were able to get the last room available, and it was just clean and cozy enough. The motel is literally right on the water, so every room has a great view! The rooms were a little dated but the bed was comfortable, the room was warm, and there were no real issues with anything. Definitely recommend! read more

Stayed at this motel recently and was unsure what to expect, drove all the way from the lower peninsula. Staff was friendly and very accommodating, website was easy to make reservations. The only cons I had were the room was advertised as no smoking but had an odd odor to it, also the beds were not comfortable at all. Overall though, it was a great location and a good experience, would consider returning to this motel. read more

We are currently staying at the Sunset. Fantastic room, as expected. Wireless internet is an added feature, as are phones in the rooms. One thing I always LOVE about mom-and-pop places like this is the personalized service. I'm not going to lie I was a little worried about just how outdated the rooms were going to be and how clean it would be even after reading the reviews. Yes it is a bit out dated but very clean! We stayed in a room with kitchen and it was so wonderful and had a cabin feel almost. It was wonderful and the view from the room past the cars is water. Your right on the water and the grass is so green plenty of places to sit to watch the sunset, grill and sit at a picnic table and so on... we watched the sunset twice and it was so beautiful. My partner and I stayed here for a night in July. We understand that a motel has a right to charge $200+ for a room during the busy season, especially given the fabulous view of the lake. But for that price point, one would hope for some more comfort and amenities. PROs: The view outside! Friendly enough reservation and check-in process, respectable WiFi, stove, microwave, and TV included. Room is cleanly. CONs: The basics! The mattress is squish and uncomfortable, the A/C unit is noisy and ineffectual and the room gets very hot as soon as it is turned off. The water temperature in the shower/bath varies erratically. And the fridge/freezer is a nice size but doesn't seem to work very well. In general, the fixtures need either some replacing or TLC from maintenance. read more

We had no heat or hot water during our one night stay. Even though I raised the temperature on the thermostat to 72° the radiators were cold to the touch the entire night . I asked the cleaning lady the next morning to help me understand the thermostat as well as how to work the shower to get hot water. She didn't understand what the problem was either. I asked for help from the management and they gave me a key to take a shower in another room. In regard to the lack of heat, I was told I didn't know how to operate the thermostat, that I didn't recognize heat, and I didn't know how old boiler system worked. No heat is no heat. When I explained we had no hot water I was told that the room next-door did. Well that's nice for those guests, but it still didn't change our situation that I have no hot water. When I felt we were entitled to a discounted rate on the room we were met was strong resistance and even blamed that we didn't understand how things worked. The manager in the end did give us a discount of $26. To me that was very insulting. There was literally no customer service. I asked to speak to the manager in person several times but he never returned my calls. He only went through the gal at the front desk. I was very surprised by the lack of understanding or willingness to accommodate a paying customer. We love the area but we will never return to this hotel. read more

My son finished running Grandma's Marathon and we left Duluth at 3:30 pm with the ambitious goal of driving all the way back to our cottage in Spruce, Michigan. Flash forward to 11:00 pm, thick, pea soup fog off of Lake Superior, drizzly rain, and a moose warning...we are from Cleveland for God's sake...a command decision was made to stop for the night. We hurriedly drove through the creepy town of Christmas and stopped at a gas station in Munising. A check of Yelp and I called the Sunset Motel. The manager answered quickly (we later found out he was up with his infant so we didn't wake him) and said he had a room left which he was able to give to us for a nice discount. The room was spotless. It had two bedrooms, a beautifully appointed kitchen, and a nice clean bathroom. The beds were comfortable and we had the best night's sleep. Lake Superior is mere steps from the room and the hotel has a nice beach and picnic areas. The next morning we made a complimentary pot of coffee and hit the road well rested and with promises to return for a proper stay. read more

My husband and I stayed here just this past weekend for our wedding anniversary. The room was very clean, and well stocked with towels. I never get enough towels in a hotel room and we had tons. The staff was very very nice and friendly. They recommended lots of things to do in town and took the time to write it all out on our map. The lady at the desk even was friendly enough to look at all my pictures which I'm sure she had seen the same thing a million times. The view was amazing and it was so peaceful. When we come back to munising this is where we will stay again. Highly recommend!!!!! read more

Check in was easy! We had this booked weeks in advance of our trip. They even called a few days ahead to check that we'd be coming. It was dog friendly as well. The room was clean and very cozy. The bed was comfortable. I would return to this motel when I return to Munising. read more

This is our 2nd trip to the Sunset. 1st was in 2015 and not a whole lot has changed in 3 years other than the new construction going on next door. We return because they are one of the few motels that are dog friendly. This a basic motel that is a little long in the tooth. The staff is great and the rooms are always clean but it really needs some updating. We rented the 2 bedroom unit both times so that's the only room we have experience with. The carpeting is stained in spots, the fridge is missing it's handles, the shower head is like 4 feet off the ground and the ceilings are plywood. Once you get past all that is really is a nice place. We just got back from a 3 night stay and this time of year is very iffy weather wise. Rained almost the entire time so outdoor use was non existent. They have a beautiful waterfront location with plenty of chairs/BBQ's and picnic tables along with a shuffleboard area. A word of warning though, there are several large holes in the ground near the seawall that are 1/2 filled with boulders that the kids (or adults with a few too many toddies LOL) can still trip on. My husband and I stayed here recently. The view from our balcony was so lovely, I was almost upset weren't able to watch the sunset from it since we were going on the sunset cruise the only evening we were there! We got a nice big room (#201 I think). It was clean, with free wireless internet and a nice new LCD TV. The motel is located a little off from the main drag, so you get to experience the wonderfully quiet and still bay at night. And it's just a minute or two to drive to town, so it's not inconvenient. I went to summer camp nearby and it turns out (gotta love small towns) that the front desk person who checked us in lives on the same lake as my summer camp, and she knows the camp director! Can't get that in a big city! Lovely place and would definitely stay here again. read more

We stayed here for 4 nights this month and had a wonderful time... Their Grand View Lodge was the perfect place for our family get-together. Everything was clean and well prepared for our arrival. It was great to have two TVs so no fighting over the programming, but with those views, who wanted to stay inside?! This was our second visit and we can't wait to come back! Stayed 2 nights in 6/2016. Although it is a friendly, "mom & pop" place to stay directly on the water in Munising, we were unsatisfied with the condition and cleanliness of the bathroom, and kitchenette in room 104. We wore our flip flops while we took a shower, and had to squeeze through a 12 inch opening to get to the shower/tub area. We had friends who stayed in room 102 and the conditions of their bathroom and kitchenette was much better than ours. If you decide to stay at this hotel, find out the room number and photos of that room before you prepay. Photos on the website do not represent ALL the rooms in the motel. read more

Wish I could say it was a nice place, but I have been trying to make reservations for over month now, and no one will return calls or emails. What is up with THAT? I did get a brief email on first contact over a month ago stating someone would contact me at the end of the week as they are under new management. Be warned.
