Our last post master as well as the person that delivered our mail decided to retire. That was the…read morebeginning to the end for common decency and professionalism around the post office experience. Both positions were filled by women. There have been multiple complaints made by several people and nothing changes. Now they are screening my calls because they are women. So I have to go out of my way and pick up my mail because the person in charge of deliveries has threatened me. I'm hoping they replace these individuals soon.

The City Hall area is really lovely with a fountain in the center of the roundabout out front while…read moreoffering a small amount of parking. The grounds are well manicured with green grass and paths and shady areas to sit. There is also a sculpture park with some interesting pieces. I was here at a particularly busy time and I wonder if the aesthetic possibly effects the functionality as people were having to park blocks away and walk in the heat. I would prefer a larger parking space for citizens and less frills myself but having pretty things to look at is always nice.

This is a really beautiful place in Redding. The grounds are well kept with interesting sculptures…read moreand points of interest all over the place. The parking is free, and the signs say that it is open 7 days per week from 6AM to 10PM. The only complaint is that a lot of transients camp out in the back area, and thus, a really obnoxious security guard feels the need to harass anyone in the area to not loiter. My husband and I enjoy walking in this park and are frequently bothered by the security guard, telling us we have to leave because if anyone stays there too long the homeless will show up and start camping out. It's ridiculous. It's a public area and if we're not there before 6 or after 10, and not defacing anything, we should be left alone.

Unlike places like LA, a 7 mile buffer between cities in North Northern CA is filled with enough open land to make you feel like you truly going to a different city. Anderson is the proud owner of a Walmart Supercenter where you can get pretty much anything you want. It is a great place to see and be seen. There is also a little outlet center that cropped up a number of years ago where you can get some discounted goodies. They have a little movie theater with 8 or so screens that caters to a crowd of people who want a nicer movie watching experience. And they are thumbing their nose at the monopoly that Cinemark has on Redding with their 3 movie houses. I'll go there just for that reason alone. If you don't live here, you probably won't go here other than to go to Walmart, outlets, or fairgrounds. If you live here, you are probably looking for that slow pace of life, retired, or trying to get away from that outrageous cost of living in Redding. Peace and respect to all my Anderson homies.

After exploring Lake Shasta Cavern, we stopped by to check out Shasta Dam. Free to park and visit…read more There is a visitor center. Inside the visitor center, there is a restroom :) You can see Mount Shasta from a distance. What a view! Looking down from the dam was really scary. Do so at your own risk. I had to hold my phone very steady to snap a photo from above. I am afraid of heights but the dam did look nice from the top center of the dam. A nice stroll from end to end.

The views are amazing and anxiety imposing!…read more You can walk out onto the dam and looking either way, the views are spectacular. To your one side, amazing anxiety driving views where even if you're not afraid of heights, you'll start breathing heavy. Then, on the other side, spectacular views of lake Shasta with imposing mountains in the backdrop. Connected to a cool visitor station, this is worth the drive to visit if you're around the area.

With Francie Sullivan, I'm wavering between four and five stars…read more If I'm guessing at Sullivan's politics, I'm going with moderate, somewhat left of center. (I'm a relativist, not an absolutist. Someone who is a bit left of center in Redding would be a bit right of center in Davis, and accused of being a member of the John Birch Society in Berkeley.) I hate to risk poisoning Sullivan's well by accusing her of being the most prominent progressive on the council, so let's just say that she's sitting at one end of a teeter-totter, with Cadd and Jones on the other end, and McArthur and Bosetti sitting closer to each other on either side of the fulcrum. To suggest (Record Searchlight) that Sullivan provides balance to the council is to misunderstand the laws of classical mechanics. Bruce R. says that Sullivan's praise of City of Redding employees is laid on "embarrassingly thick sometimes." Maybe, but if you've witnessed a few city council meetings, you've seen how city staff and the council are regularly subjected to uninformed, paranoid, cynical, withering criticism from the Shastanistan Brigade of Proudly Ignorant and Arrogant Red-Faced Know-Nothing Yahoos. Sullivan famously lost it a few years aback and dressed down those who regularly bring their toxic points of view and rabid personalities to council meetings. That episode was largely out of character for her -- it's a measure of how nasty the SBPIARFKNY can be that a person of mild temperament like Sullivan could be stirred to the point of issuing a genuine verclempt-spiced rant. At any rate, when it was high time for someone to stand up for civility and decorum at council meetings, that person was Sullivan. Like I said, I'm on the fence between four and five stars. Part of Sullivan's platform has always included the notion that small businesses in Redding need more encouragement. I'm a small business owner in Redding, and I agree. I've yet to see anything come out of City Council that would specifically provide a hand up to Redding's small businesses. I've yet to see Sullivan champion such a proposal -- if she has, and I missed it, in the words of Jack Nicholson's Col. Nathan R. Jessup: "Well, aren't I the asshole?" If Redding has a local small vendor preference -- as many of California's more prosperous communities have -- I'm unaware of it. (Sorry Francie. For me, pointing out the existence of the SCEDD and the EDC on your campaign website doesn't quite cut it.) Lastly, I'm going to say it right out loud: Sullivan is a strikingly attractive woman -- she'd look fantastic modeling the cowgirl/hippie-chic clothing and jewelry featured in Robert Redford's "Sundance" catalogue (if Bob had the huervos to use models other than 20-30 year olds). As we all know, strong-chinned men and gracile-featured women have an unfair advantage in politics and beyond. But the looks only complement Sullivan's smarts and heart. It's those latter attributes that tip the scale to five stars.

Francie Sullivan's public and genuinely enthusiastic support of the contributions made by Redding…read morecity staff is nothing to be embarrassed about. It is a very practical and shrewd tactic for doing her job - which is to find ways to ensure the wellbeing of the residents of Redding. It is in the interest of all residents to have talented and committed staff working effectively in planning and public works, legal, treasury, and community services. Francie is well aware that in recent years there have been plenty of issues that could, and did, cause some employees to find another employment opportunity. If she were a CEO she would be praised for preventing brain drain and employee turnover that can negatively affect the mission and bottom line of any organization. This does not mean that issues or need for adjustment is unaddressed, but Francie knows recognition goes a long way to help staff and community members achieve better things together. She has chosen to be a champion of what's great about Redding and what's great about the people who work for the City, to promote their value to city residents who might be unaware and at the same time to share publicly her thanks for a job well done.
