This is a real find along Arapahoe Road, which finally has a good number of local and ethnic places and not just chains. It's Persian food, so not exactly the same as the menu at your standard Middle Eastern places, but don't be afraid to try something new. They do their takes on kabobs, stews and marinated meats, and they are very good at all of them. They want you to have a different experience than the typical hummus and shawarma places so let them take you to a new part of the world. There is a liquor license, which might be a little surprising, but don't forget to try their black tea as well. We've had good friendly service when we've gone, and this will continue to be one of our preferred places when in this part of town. read more

This place is a hidden gem! We were wowed by the quality of the meats, especially the lamb, steak, and saffron chicken. Everything was juicy, flavorful, and cooked perfectly. We ordered a side of grilled veggies expecting maybe one skewer, but it came as a full plate. The char on the vegetables added a delicious, authentic touch. We also tried all three desserts: the baklava, the funnel cake with donuts, and most especially the rose ice cream with crushed pistachios. The ice cream had a soft, homemade texture and a delicate floral flavor that really stood out. Portions were huge, which we love because we enjoy having leftovers. I really enjoyed eating at Surena with a friend of mine. We both ordered the Koobideh entree which is their most popular item at the restaurant. It was delicious. I also ordered one for my mother to go, but the kitchen was closed. The server named Reza had ordered the exact same dish to go for himself and decided to let me have it to take to my mother. That was one of the kindest things I have ever experienced at any restaurant. The restaurant was extremely cold. They have the AC blasting. It was a very hot day so I understand, but I pretty much needed a blanket to eat my dinner. The drinks were good, dining room was clean and the restaurant was decently lit. If I could give Surena Persian Cuisine six stars, I would, but alas, Yelp won't let me break the system. The food is the definition of *chefs kiss.* My go-to is the lamb shank which isn't just "fall off the bone". This lamb must have gone to culinary therapy to let go of the bone willingly. It's tender, juicy, and drenched in a sauce so addicting you'll probably consider bathing in it. Pair it with the buttery rice, and suddenly you understand why empires have fought over spices. The service here is so immaculate. These folks have mastered the art of being attentive without hovering and are some of the friendliest people you'll meet. They don't just set a new standard; they shatter it, rebuild it, and serve it to you on a silver platter with a side of saffron. I've been here multiple times, and somehow, each visit outdoes the last. I don't know what kind of magic is happening in that kitchen, but I'm pretty sure they're using ancient Persian recipes mixed with a dash of wizardry. My mom and I love Persian food. We went here a few weeks ago and I just haven't had time to write the review but let me just tell you about this place and it's deliciousness. It is in a little shopping complex off of Arapaho and it's tucked into the corner so you might miss it upon first glance. I expected it to be just a casual little restaurant, but it has more of a sophisticated feel than that. We weren't sure what to get so we asked the waiter for his recommendations, and he did not disappoint. My mom ended up with the Surena kabob with Baghali Polo which is a lamb kabob with dill seasoned rice while I ended up with the koobideh kabob which is a ground beef kabob with zereshk polo, a rice dish with barberries. I especially loved mine. The kebab was excellent, tender and flavorful, The rice was very unique, as the barberries are similar in texture to sour pomegranate. I quite enjoyed it. My mother and I decided to have a coffee and a dessert. Again I asked for the waiter's recommendation. He ended up bringing out zoolbia and Bambieh which is similar to a baklava, but in my opinion, a little sweeter. He also brought out the most fantastic ice cream I have ever had in my life. It was a pistachio ice cream with chunks of frozen cream, whole pistachios, saffron, and to top it all off, it was made with rosewater. I wish I could have this ice cream every day because it was so perfect that this place could just serve that and they would have a line out the door. We got to the restaurant closer to closing time but they were still kind enough to seat us. They did let us know that the kitchen was closing soon and that the restaurant would close soon as well. The service was quick and we were able to be seated, eat, and leave the restaurant in under 30 minutes. The inside of the restaurant is spacious and clean. The chicken thigh kabob came in a large portion that would satisfy about 2-3 meals. The flavor of the meat was good, but the chicken was slightly overcooked and a little dry. We were given a menu and then another menu with pictures cause they assumed we didn't know what to order. It is a proper sit down place with authentic Persian food. - eggplant dip: great flavor with think bread - lamb shank: lamb shank was very tender and flavorful. It came right off the bone. I substituted the side of rice with a plate of steamed veggies, and even the steamed veggies came in such a big portion and was sautéed well and flavorful. - kabob: kebab was fine and not my favorite, and it came with a large portion of saffron rice. It's not bad, but I definitely loved the lamb shank more. - Persian ice cream: the flavor of the Persian ice cream with a surprise. It was special saffron and was topped with pistachios. Tried this place out for first time because I saw they had Chicken Kobideh which I love and is hard to find. It was delicious. The place doesn't look like much from outside but is very nice on inside. The Kobideh was excellent. We had good middle eastern food after a really long time! Their house tea is so good - reminded me of authentic tea that I'd last had at a Persian friends place in Los Angeles! We got the garlic yogurt and eggplant starters - both so good! I was so full with the apps that I did not order mains lol. Husband got the kobideh kebab- brilliant! And my brother got the surena lamb- really nicely done. The meat here is cooked to perfection. Portions are humongous so obviously we took leftovers. This place is really nice!! Definitely a lot fancier than I was expecting. We were dressed very casually, the staff still warmly greeted us. The decor inside is done really well, would definitely be a good date night place. We ordered the surena kabob, the barg, and the mirza ghasemi. The food took a little bit of time to come out so it was good we got an appetizer. The mirza ghasemi was really good and a very big portion, enough for the whole table to share. Even though the food took some time to come out, it was well worth the wait. Both the barf(beef) and surena kabob(lamp chops) were SUPER TENDER and perfectly flavored. The rice was very fluffy and buttery. This place is on the more expensive side, however the portions are reasonable for the price. One warning is that the jalepeno that comes with the rice entree is very spicy. Probably the spiciest jalapeno I have had. We didn't have room for desert but they have a lot of good options that I will come back to try. read more

The food is really bad. I was raised on Persian food and know what the baseline is. This is not it. I think the owners need to reteach their American cooks how to make their Persian food. I ordered both the beef and chicken kabobs. It lacked salt, the meat was over mixed/worked, dried out, and greasy. The ghormeh sabzi was bitter, it didn't even taste like it had fenugreek (the defining ingredient) or dried lemons. It was bitter and montone in flavor. Their soup of the day was crappy tomato soup with frozen vegetables added to it. It was essentially tomato paste and water. The Mirza ghasemi was bad. The eggplant was bitter as if they used a bad batch of eggplants. It didn't have any salt in it. It was just straight up mashed eggplant. There wasn't anything else in it. This place is not authentic Persian food. Even frozen international meals from traders have more depth. If you want to go to flavor town, then keep driving. This place ain't it. read more

It's been over a year since I was last at Surena. This time I had different choices. I started with Doogh, a salty yogurt based drink, similar to Indian Lassi. Their version was not freshly prepared but came in a carton from a dairy in California. Next, I had the Shirazi salad ( diced tomatoes, cucumber and onions, mint, parsley accented with lemon juice & olive oil). Quite tart. My entree was Ghormeh Sabzi (caramelized chunks of beef, herbs and Persian spices) served on a bed of basmati rice. Some of the rice had saffron in it. Most of their kabobs are colorful. It did't look appetizing, but the meat was well cooked and tender. For dessert, I had their Persian ice cream (rosewater, pistachios and lots of saffron).
