This is the second time I try dinning at this establishment only for the bigger hostess to be rude and quote me 45 minutes. absolutely horrible demminer and attitude. i walked in, the bigger hostess looked at me then looked back down. i walk up to her and say hello first just for the skinnier hostess to have to take over the interaction. read more

Came here on vacation with two friends. We went twice in the same week. First visit: Mussel and headless shrimp in my boil tasted really fresh but the surfing special medium sauce really tasted like a lot of nothing. The sauce was serviceable but not as good as places in Louisiana. My cousin makes a better sauce in her kitchen. I also tried to order a piece of catfish since the waiter at the bar said that people loved it but she forgot to bring it out to me. My friends enjoyed the crab cheese fries and fried shrimp both visits. Pepsi was flat. I left this visit full. Second visit: I decided to get the catfish platter this time and it was absolutely horrible. No seasoning and the fish WAS NOT cooked all the way through I would not recommend. One of my friends decided to order a seafood boil surfing special spicy and he said that the seafood was fresh (crawfish and shrimp) but the spicy sauce was not spicy at all. Lol I wonder what the mild sauce tastes like. Water tasted like tap water straight from the sink if not scooped from out of a puddle. I left this visit kinda starving. Three different people came to our table so I wasn't sure who was our waiter, the food well it "looked good" but it didn't have very much taste.. husband had a boil I picked at his and I felt like the seasoning was missing something or maybe it was all the garlic that was used...the rest of use had fried baskets ..menu said jumbo shrimp...(noting jumbo about overly breaded shrimp.)it's a nice place for a cheap lunch or get together. First time visiting Surfing Crab and was highly disappointed with the shrimp boil. Shrimp had head on and was not deveined causing them to be very mushy. Being a seafood restaurant it should be known that when leaving the heads on they contain an enzyme that can quickly turn the flesh mushy if not separated from the body immediately after harvesting. Also the server took 32 minutes before coming to our table claims the delay was due to a shift change also provided incorrect menu price which was a shocker when we received our bill. I will consider to give a second try because I did enjoy the crab legs I will just request them steamed only since the seasoning was very salty. Everything frozen. They advertised fresh/live seafood at an extra charge and it was all frozen. When I brought it to managers attention I was told that the food tasted rubbery and bland because it comes from different regions lol and removed a dollar charge from my bill. Overall it was fine. We went for lunch. I had the fried shrimp and my husband had the blackened flounder and shrimp. Pro: you can get any fried platter grilled or ask for blackened even though its not on the menu, though the cook was confused, the server was very good and straightened it out. Service was good, friendly. Husband said the flounder was good. Con: Food was rather boring. I was hoping there would be some spice or something in the fried shrimp but it was rather bland. Went here with a work friend on my last night in Brownsville. Every day when we went by here, the parking lot was always packed, so we figured it had to be a good place to get some seafood. My friend got a crab boil which was brought out in the plastic bag and had the seasonings mixed right in front of him before being poured out on his plate that was roughly the size of a trash can lid. It looked really good! I got the fried shrimp, which was ok. If I had more cocktail sauce (which was my own fault for not asking for more), it would have been better. But the side of corn on the cob I ordered....absolutely perfect! The atmosphere is what you would expect for a seafood joint. Which was perfect as well. Giant paper table cloths, as well as rolls of paper towels on each table to use as napkins that really came in handy, given the amount of sloppy eating that occurred. This place used to be my favorite, we would go eat at least once a week. Lately they've been slacking it with the seafood boil. The boil will be too watery and not enough seasoning, and when we told the manager about the seasoning they took the boil back and just made it spicy . It's been a while since I've gotten a good boil from this place now, so if anyone has a new recommendation on where to go to get an actually good well seasoned boiled I'm open for suggestions. 11-8-2021 Just left surfing crab restaurant. SO SO DISAPPOINTED. I ordered the rice with shrimp, chicken and beef. It actually had a ton of fried, DRIED rice, 3 shrimp, pieces of chicken and beef were extra dry. Not worth 14.99 Husband ordered crawfish, calamari With potatoes, corn and sausage. He actually got 6 crawfish, two small potatoes, 6 sausage slices, two corn on cob and a handful of thin calamari's for 14.99 At those prices at least filter your water. Please tell your servers not to over do their perfume. read more
