RE: Surf lesson on July 11, 2024, at Bolsa Chica. My twin 9-year-olds were visiting from Austin, TX and wanted to improve their surfing skills. We settled on Surfriders Academy. Marcus was very responsive in returning my call and setting up a lesson. Our instructor was Dallas, originally from Hawaii. Dallas was very friendly and had good rapport with the boys. He gave very good pre-water instructions on board techniques, parts of the surfboard, which leg to use for the leash, and the proper "pop-up" technique. The boys said the instructions were clear and they got very good results. Dallas had no problem working with the two boys simultaneously, and they can now take the board out on their own. Surfrider's Academy is fantastic. Marcus got ahold of me right away, and got me the details I needed for my private lesson. He was responsive to all my questions. Julio was my instructor. He got ahold of me the day before, and made sure I was all set. The board and wetsuit that were provided looked like new, and Julio was friendly and professional. Prior to my lesson I had never surfed much less been passed waist deep in the ocean, but Julio had me standing up and riding to shore within 15 minutes. Something to note, that had me a little apprehensive at first, is that the lesson did not take place in the main part of Huntington Beach. In fact it was at the north end of Bolsa Chica State Beach (technically within the city of Huntington Beach). They do this for a reason. We were staying for a few days in Huntington Beach. My 12 year old daughter loves water so I decided to book a surf lesson for her. I contacted Marcus and he was able to accommodate our schedule. The beach we met him at didn't have great waves. No problem. Marcus is very knowledgeable about the area and we went to a beach about ten minutes north. Marcus' passion for surfing really shows in his warm and positive instruction. He spent 75 minutes in the water with my daughter, patiently guiding her and giving her great tips. So great that she actually got up a couple of times! As a parent, I was impressed with his attention to safety. From the beginning, Marcus accommodated my last minute private lesson with excellent telephone etiquette. My instructor was Ben who is safe, knowledgeable, and down to earth. He explained things thoroughly and I felt totally safe/comfortable with him. I learned how to surf and we had many laughs during the sessions as well haha.. I got to ride more than a few waves by the end of the lessons. We worked on everything! From paddling, turning the board around to catch the up-coming wave, and dynamics of managing riding a good wave. There's so much I learned today, cant fit it all here, but trust that they're good! Can't complain about the price: if u pay with card it's $140 or $120 cash for 1.5hrs (and don't forget to add ur instructors gratuity!) Great surfing lesson yesterday. So my 11-year-old son who has never surfed wanted to learn surfing with 2 other boys (a 13-year-old who had no experience and a 12-year-old with some experience). After researching surf lessons, I texted Marcus at Surfrider Academy. Within minutes he called me, I asked him some general questions. My first impression was great communication. I love people who respond promptly. Then few days later I texted him about his availability on Sunday 9/15. He texted right back, saying I'll get back to you in 40 minutes. And in about that time he called me and we set up lessons for Sunday 9/15 (my boy and the 13-year-old had no experience so they had 1 instructor; the 12-year-old has experience so he had a private instructor) I confirmed the boys weight/height info, and Marcus texted back location to meet, what to bring, our instructor (Ben)....etc. All instructions were fast and clear. So the communication was great. That's how all businesses should be. As Marcus said free parking behind Travelodge can be a little tricky so to arrive a little early, as we were coming, instructor Ben texted me saying he was gonna be 10 min late. I said no problem (no problem if you just let us know). Now, the parking was tricky, was full, so you have to wait, and hoping to get lucky, as we did. We met up with instructor Ben, he gave our 2 boys basic safety info, basic surf board info, wetsuit, and we signed paperwork. Then it was on-sand demonstration of basic moves. After that, Ben took the boys out to sea for their 1st surfing experience. Boys had an awesome time. Parents had so much laughs too. Kudos for the boys for never complaining about how tiring it was, because pedaling out against the waves was really tiring. And they spent a long time in the water. Ben was a great instructor. It was a super fun day. 5-star for (1) great communication from Marcus and (2) great instructor Ben. read more

I recently moved to the area from Canada, and had my sister over visiting, and we've both always wanted to try out surfing. Now that we were finally in the area to do it, we decided to go for it, and we are so happy that we called Marcus. We booked a 1.5 hour private lesson for the two of us the next day, and met up at Huntington Beach. He had asked our height on the phone and brought us the correct boards and wetsuits. Marcus was awesome. Really cool guy. We were really nervous, but he instantly put us at ease, and was so friendly, patient and encouraging. We practised the movements on the beach beforehand, and then hit the water. We were both able to get up and ride several times, which we were definitely not expecting to do. After booking a trip to Orange County, my husband mentioned how he has always wanted to learn to surf. I searched Yelp and found Marcus based on his great reviews and emailed him to set up a surprise lesson for my husband. Marcus got right back to me and we easily scheduled the lesson. Marcus takes a credit card to book the lesson but doesn't charge you until your lesson at which point you can use whatever card you want. We didn't really know what to expect but were pleasantly surprised with the experience. They spent about fifteen minutes outside the water where they went over the basics and then they hit the waves. I observed and could tell he was doing a great job! At one point they came out of the water to try some new moves on the beach then hit the waves again. It was a success as my husband got up and rode multiple waves! After the lesson he mentioned to me how great of a teacher Marcus was, he really catered the lesson to my husbands skill level and knew how to encourage him to get better. We booked a private lesson for 4 (1 adult, 3 teens) with Marcus and by the end of it we all had several successful rides under our belts. Marcus sent easy to follow instructions on how to get the location and we were met by him and another instructor. After a brief orientation and basics on the beach we were off and surfing for real. I was pretty surprised how stable the board was when going from laying down to standing and felt comfortable pretty quickly. My girlfriend and I went for a lesson yesterday. After some confusion on the scheduling (mainly my fault) we got everything settled our appointment was re-scheduled for the next time slot. Our instructor, Eric actually skipped lunch and gave us an extended 2-hour session to make sure we had a good time. He was extremely friendly and knowledgeable and sure enough, by the end of it we got the hang of it and are ready to hit the waves again soon. I would highly recommend these lessons to anyone that's completely new to surfing and looking to get a great introduction. My one recommendation would be to set up a secure way of paying through the website instead of over e-mail but other then that everything was top notch! read more

Several years ago, I took surf lessons with Ed Morgan of Surfriders and had an awesome experience. So naturally, when my brother came for a visit and wanted to try surfing, I immediately referred him to my old instructor. My brother had a great lesson. He stood up 10+ times and now he's hooked on surfing...which is hilarious because he is NOT the stereotypical beach-bum (think wranglers and a cowboy hat). The best part: Ed actually still remembered me (one guy, from one lesson ~ 2yrs ago)!These guys are great instructors and great people; you can't ask for much more than that.
