We came here on a Groupon for stand-up paddle boarding. Easy peasy to get a quick intro., get gear, and get started. They drive everything out for you- the drop-off point is in Newport, somewhere around Balboa Island, I think. If you paddle far enough south, you can reach Balboa Island Fun and watch the ferry go back and forth. The water is pretty green, and I suggest not to go after a storm (there are storm drains everywhere), but I think the area is probably the best place with the calmest waters. The hour starts when you reach the shore, and they come back and pick everything up after 60min. Great experience. read more

Had a really good time! I booked my lesson over the phone and had a customized start time to suit my schedule. On the day of the lesson, my friend and I had a really great time. Positive experience. My daughters instructor ,Garret was extremely patient with my non coordinated 13 year old daughter. He had her up on the 2nd try. He taught her about the currents and understanding the waves. Highly recommend this surf school. Daughter wants to go again! It was very exciting to see my daughter ride the waves. What a fun experience with Jimbo. My two friends and I were visiting from Austin TX and just finished a snow boarding trip/ ski trip. We really enjoyed having Jimbo as our instructor. He was super friendly, knowledgeable, easy going, and overall just an extremely good dude to work with. He's the kind of guy you would want to just hang with outside of surfing. Jimbo got us all to stand up on several waves, and for people who haven't surfed before it actually wasn't hard. The wetsuits they give you kept us warm although it was on January 2nd. I literally wasn't cold the entire time we were out on the water. From start to finish it was an awesome experience. Don't forget to Tip your instructor as a thank you! Jimbo we love you dude! For my daughter's 7th birthday while on vacation I booked a 2 hour private lesson with CCSS. It was really easy getting to the office. The employees were very nice. She was easily suited up and paired with a girl! Ashley was very nice. It was my daughter's first time surfing and Ashley took it easy with her. My daughter is very little and Ashley was very cognizant of her size (really small) and kept an eye on her body on the board. I am not sure if my daughter loved riding the boards over the waves getting out or trying to ride them coming in! Either way it was a very pleasant experience. At the end Ashley took a few minutes to just swim with my daughter so she could show off her competitive swimming skills. Very nice of her! I bought a Groupon for a group lesson for 2 on Sept.30. I tried to get my boys into classes unsuccessfully. Left 3 messages and emailed via the contact form on their website. Nobody ever returned my calls or email. Eventually got a refund from Groupon because I could not redeem. read more

We had a fantastic time this week at surf school! Stephen was wonderful, helping us find the best deal and schedule. He recommended that my 14 year old son and I take a private lesson instead of the group lesson we bought on Groupon. At first, I thought it was just an upsell, but he was right: we got much better attention, which was important for my son. He just tacked the small extra charge to our Groupon. No big deal. Canon Carroll was our fantastic instructor: Friendly and engaging while being no nonsense, which is important when learning the basics. We spent 20 minutes or so on the beach learning essential tips and stretching. Then, we headed to the surf. He provided tons of advice and assistance, customizing it to our individual skill and ability levels (the 14 year old athlete was far more able than the 47 year old mom). Despite our best intentions, Canon was injured twice during the lesson. One was a freak accident and another was probably more avoidable if I had been more skilled. I wish I had watched some surf instructions online before trying because I am a visual learner and could have caught on more quickly. I highly recommend this school and would enroll my son in more lessons if we lived here. read more

Booked a private lesson for two kids ages 7 and 9. Started at 8am. We drove to the surf shop first to sign waivers and get suited. Then we drove down to Huntington Beach roughly 6 mins drive from shop and met them there. Nathan was the kids instructor. One of the kids has ADHD. Nathan was patient, kind, and great teacher. The waves were wicked strong. Spent roughly 1 on the beach closer to shallow end to catch the waves. The kids enjoyed it. Opened their eyes to endless possibilities. Thank you Nathan. Wonderful time with the lesson by Cannon today. He was pleasant, patient and an overall great instructor. He provided clear, precise direction and was able to get both our family members up on their boards quickly. My daughter wants to go back again before we head home because she had so much fun! My friend and I took a lesson with John and Jake and they were both awesome! My instructor (John) had SO much patience and listened to all my fears and comments about the waves and ocean. Did a 2 hour lesson and surfed (stood and rode waves) most of the time. Definitely will be back! The entire staff was accommodating and attentive to all of our needs. It's a very unpleasant experience. Definitely not coming back. The instructor's name is Coey, he was very unprofessional and mean. He never motivated me but kept making me embarrassed. It was my first time surfing, he told me: look at these children, they're also first time surfing, they can stand up on the board. He tried to shame me for not making good progress. When I asked him for surfing technique, he didn't know anything, he just said: you need to try more. He was very mean and not supportive at all. when I communicated with him about my feelings, he just kept defending himself and told me there's no technique for improvement. Instructors need more training. Awful experience. read more

Really great experience. First time surfing and Garrett was our instructor. He was very knowledgeable and patient, but appropriately assertively with his teaching. Surfing is definitely tough and seems to take a lot of technical ability, so this is a great starting point as I couldn't imagine just going into surfing without any prior lessons. If you've considered surfing or have an iota of interest in it, this is the perfect place to start! They will sort you out with your wet suit and surf board, and guide you gently through the whole process. Highly recommended! read more

I called about scheduling a session using a groupon that I had seen - I hadn't yet bought it because I didn't know what the school's schedule would be like during the holidays. Turns out I don't even need to buy it! I showed up on Wednesday at 10 AM and was promptly checked in and was provided a wet suit by Cannon, one of the instructors at the school. Cannon led us in a brief dry land lesson, which included safety instructions and practice popping up to standing. We then headed out to the beach, where the instructors helped us paddle out. Even though I arrived the morning after a big storm that left snow all over the place, the water was still warm enough. I was terrified that it would be freezing, but the wetsuits do the trick (though your exposed hands, feet, and face might lose some feeling). The instructors helped us catch waves one at a time by prompting us to paddle and/or giving us a shove as the wave came to catch us. For those who caught on early, you could definitely try catching the wave on your own. Our instructors were very helpful and set you up for success. Our class was on the larger side (six of us) so there were two instructors for the class. We also saw dolphins which was pretty awesome!! I ended up booking a private with Cannon for a few days later. For $30 extra and one-on-one instruction for 2.5 hours, it was well worth it, though the group lesson only had two people in it. So glad I got to catch some surf before my flight - there's nothing as exhilarating as the ocean carrying you down the shore. Lessons include board and wet suit and 2.5 hours of instruction. Hi. We bought a 2 hour private surf lesson for 1. When my son called to make an appointment, Clint Carroll offered to give my son a "private" lesson for an additional $35. He said the other private lesson we bought is actually in a group. My son, being naive, paid two additional $35 for him and his sister. When they went out to surf, it was the two of them with 1 instructor. Not only did we get the bait and switch, we ended up not getting the private lesson. Totally had a good experience. Have been wanting to go surfing for a while. First time was in Hawaii two years ago and thought to myself, Why do i need to go anywhere else! Im a so cal, orange county girl. Beach is 20 minutes away. The son, Cannon picked up the phone and honored the price of the Living Social Deal I found for $53. Competitors were about $100+, so i wasn't about to let that deal go. Cannon said there was no need for me to buy the living social and only charged my credit card for the promised price. #Win! When I put the address in my phone, I was surprised it wasn't by the beach. Don't be alarmed! The location was still very close, just among a few residential areas but accessible from the street. Had a few businesses around. After you arrive, they have you sign in and give you a wetsuit. Only cannon signed everyone in. For a friday morning at 9am on spring break weekend, about 15 of us were there. All first timers. At first, that got me worried that I wouldn't get a lot of attention. But fear not, no problem at all. You do a little 8 minute lesson in the store with a board on how to stand up. I skateboard and snowboard (not well) so It came a little easier. I skateboard goofy but i ride my snowboard and surfboard regular (I am so weird) I was able to catch waves none the less! The staff seem to be in their early/ mid twenties. Total surfer dudes who know what they are doing. And also very helpful. I am one to ask A LOT of questions, and they answered each one with a calm, smooth, relaxed demeanor. Which I appreciated because I had gone to the lesson by myself with no friends. Couldn't find anyone to go with me but the group and the instructors made everyone feel welcome, especially me! After the 8 minute lesson we drove separately to the beach. BRING COINS! You'll have to grab a meter. You'll park on Twin Dolphins by the huge hotel. A huge truck came with our surfboards and to my surprise, about 4 more instructors met us at the beach. Now for the surfing, we each were called one by one, getting individual attention with an instructor. They teach you to balance and push you to the shore, which you are then to stand and ride it. I was afraid I wouldn't get a lot of surf time, but my fellow first timers got tired and didn't go back out. After about 20 minutes I was surfing to the shore then being called back out almost instantly. It was amazing. All in all, lesson is 2 hours including arrival at the store. I would say I was able to surf for about little over an hour. Went out easily more than 20 times. Had a great experience and would totally do it again. I forgot my instructors name, but he was in polo in high school and moved to Newport. Answered all my questions about how to read waves and how to surf. Totally cool guy. Would recommend! The only thing is that Huntington beach has tar :/ apparently there is an oil rig nearby and some of it got on my surfboard! Didn't notice till the instructor told me. Blah! read more

Hubby bought a Groupon for him and H to try SUP. #1: Lesson was scheduled for Sunday. They call on Saturday asking "Where are you?" #2: Had to meet them at their office location for part of the lesson. What is that about? #3: They take you to the beach and drop off the boards and say, "We'll be back in a couple hours". Uhh...I thought this was for a lesson? No instruction in the water with the board. #3: They had the gall to ask for $20 "gratuity" to transport the SUP boards to the beach. If they would actually do a SUP lesson correctly, wouldn't you meet at the beach already? Why would you "ask" for a gratuity? If you want to charge for transporting the boards, then add it to your Groupon deal!!! I think this SUP Lesson Groupon deal was more of a way for this company to make extra money in the off season from surfing lessons. It would've been cheaper to rent a couple boards from another location "on or near the beach" and probably receive an actual lesson. So before I decided to sign up for an actual class with a pro, I decided to see how committed I was with surfing by seeing if I would go surfing every day for a week. I called around and Huntington surf and sports recommended Clint Carroll surf school to me over the phone so I called them. Steven picked up right away and was so great over the phone and called me back within an hour to let me know that he had availability for classes the next day. The whole process was easy: I paid over the phone and shortly after I got an email confirmation with instructions on where to meet, what time, and what to bring. Today was the big day! We met at their shop, filled out some forms, go into our wetsuits (luckily, I had my own, because they were short on size 8s, but whatever! Lol!) and all headed to the beach on Twin Dolphin and PCH. Parking at the meters always gets me anxious because I never know how long I'll be in the waves but I'll just write it off. I'm educating myself! :) I got to get trained by Blaze! Never thought he was how old he said he was because he acts so mature and knowledgeable! After a couple practice rounds on the sand with the other folks who were also taking lessons (5 of us), we headed into the water and I was soon standing on the board!!! I gotta tell you, though, it is MUCH EASIER being on their long, thick, wide soft board! What was it called? Storm blade? It was also easy to carry back into the water because it had handles, unlike all the other boards. I liked the class so much that I decided to ask them if they could sell me a board but Stephen's wise advice was to practice, get better and buy one when I'm comfortable and ready to graduate to a real board, since those boards were just for students. Lol! And I'm not going to be on those boards forever! Anyway, I liked the class so much that I decided to just rent a board and go back out to the waves to practice what I learned. Can I just say I had THE most amazing time ever today!! Easy as heck to book the appointment and I got a private lesson with Cannon....I can't really compare him to anyone/but he seriously was the BEST instructor I could have had! The whole time I felt like I was hanging with a friend. Super down to earth and there wasn't a dull moment of convo...I love that this is a family business and he, his dad (the owner) and grandpa have grown up surfing. It definitely made me feel comfortable. He was one thousand percent present every step of the way in helping me out in the water and would cheer and encourage every time I stood up and caught a wave....and when I didn't, he gave me the direction as to what I did incorrectly so I'd get it right the next time. Top notch surf school with super cool people. Had the pleasure of meeting the instructors, including Clint and his son Cannon. Cannon spent the morning teaching me (43yrs old) and my son Chase (9 yrs old) how to surf for the first time. Cannon gave us instruction on the beach and then took us out to make our first runs. In the end, she only took photos for half an hour and never sent them to me despite my constant reminders. This experience was a total disappointment and an absolute waste of time and money. I would never recommend this service to anyone. The merchant was also being racist, and accusatory. I have the recording if anyone is interested. Overall, just stay away to keep your insanity. Many other surf schools in Huntington and I trust there are many other non racist people.

She recommended Jorge because he has kids of his own. Jorge was great. Right away she hopped up and rode wave after wave. He was proactive at identifying good waves and giving her a slight push with verbal instructions. Afterwards, she kept asking me for a board and to go back surfing.. Even if you are a great surfer, there are many advantages of getting a lesson for your child. They have wet suits and giant foam boards. This saves money instead of going out and spending two or three hundred when your kid might not even like it. Using a larger board is the way to go and it eliminates the frustrations of learning on a shorter board. Jorge was great. He was proactive, engaging, and well versed with kids. I ended up buying a used foam board for her to practice more on. As she progresses, she can get a regular board This is a great place to take a lesson. Open communication and the follow-through makes me a fan and then some! Don't just go to the beach and take selfies to post. That behavior ruins the beach and it's a stupid way to live a fake life. While I was planning on easing my son (and myself!) into school/work over the course of 2 weeks, the place that I got hired at wanted me to start just 2 days after my interview. The first day drop-off went fairly well, I definitely cried more than my little one, and by the time I made it to my office just 5 minutes down the street from the school, my son's teachers had already sent me updates in the school's app that made me feel instantly better. The app allows us parents to know our kids' daily activities, diaper changes/potty breaks, meals (did I mention those are provided by the school? Complete game-changer for our busy mornings!!), naps, etc. and also allows us to see pictures of our children throughout the day. However, with Isabella's guidance, care, compassion, and immense patience, my sister's progress has exceeded our expectations. Isabella is a wonderful instructor who embodies warmth, positivity, and is firm even when she brings on new challenges for growth, which is perfect for my sister. With her compassion and kindness, Isabella has managed to make major progress with my sister to allow swimming goggles to be placed over her eyes. For nearly all her life, my sister has hated being submerged under water, goggles over her eyes, or anything over her face, but Isabella has been able to change that and help my sister grow in less than a year. Thanks to the support of her teachers, she has excelled academically. After a year at FVM, she took the GATE exam through the school district. Not only was she able to skip a grade, and she was also accepted into the GATE program. I truly believe this wouldn't have happened if she hadn't attended FVM. I'm incredibly grateful to FVM and all the staff. Ms. Sneha is such a kind and caring person. Without her, my daughter wouldn't have had the opportunity to learn here. Ms. Neranja, one of my daughter's primary teachers, holds strong teaching principles, and whenever I speak with her, I feel confident that my daughter is in good hands. I have found these classes to be a great way to strengthen their swimming skills and getting them used to drills in the water. Beginner classes are 1 hour long on T/Th from 5-6pm and your kid will get a great workout! They also learn how to move their legs to swim in place, how to swim holding the ball, pass the ball, score and block. When they have enough skill they can move on to the next level, which is M/T/Th from 5-6:30pm. My son has loved this year-round team; even in the winter he is excited to show up. From my observations, these swim sports help children develop some serious grit; rain or shine, they go in the water ready to practice. The coaches have been great too (shout out to coach Jake! And the others too, I just haven't learned their names). They RARELY cancel practice, unless there are thunderstorms. And the absolute best part of this club: canceling/starting a subscription is SUPER easy. It was about customer service, follow-through, and communication. Had someone simply returned one of our many requests with an honest update, we likely would have remained customers.
