I switched driving schools, hoping that they would teach my child how to drive since they are professional and I am paying my child came back and told me all they did was drive the drive test route that they will be given and six months later I come to find out that the drive test route They were taken on for their test was not what the school was taking them on Make sure you tell them to teach them how to drive it cost a lot of money to pay for these schools and they should be doing their job read more

Ted was a very awesome guy! Helped me pass my test on the first try, he walked me through some possible routes that the driving tester might make me go through and it helped a lot during the test, I was able to learn how to be a good and careful driver, 100% recommend this company to anyone. read more

I am so happy with this company. We had been having a hard time with anxiety for my daughter. They helped her work through the worries and fears. Ben even helped her go around the DMV area to give her confidence. They took the time to talk through all the steps and worries of driving with others on the road. I will be using them again for my other two kids when the time come. They also had great communication with me the whole time. And didn't go extra lessons when not needed. i think i should explain a bit further about what happened since my original google review was not uploaded here as i have just noticed. SO.. the photo i attached says "stop by" nothing about mailing my pink slip to me was said when i finished my online course. So obviously, i assumed i had to go pick it up personally at this person's office. So as anyone else would do, i looked up the business to find the address so i could go. (Literally had to get my parents to drive me 40 minutes away from where i live to get to this guy. When we got there, we were surprised to see that this was his home address. Okay, well, the website still says "stop by" and if he didn't want people showing up at his house, he wouldn't have uploaded his home address on google as his business address right? Well... Keep in mind it was around noon at this point, we didn't want to show up TOO early even though google said they opened at like 5am. Now i guess that makes sense cause it's their house. But anyway, we knocked on this guy's door and turns out, he's not home. But his (very rude) wife was. After the first knocks, she shouted from inside, "CAN I HELP YOU?! I'M STILL IN MY PAJAMAS!" First off, Lady, it's not my fault that you're still in bed at noon on a weekday. When you list your home address on the internet as your business address, you can't expect people not to show up there looking for your business. ESPECIALLY when your damn website literally TELLS us to go to your business personally. Anyway, after she finally answered the door and we told her we were looking for rob, she told us that she would call him and he would be here soon. He showed up in his Surf's Up car, rolled down the window and asked, very aggressively "what do you need?!" I told him what i needed and he was like "i mailed it to you yesterday" and i was like "well, your website told me to 'stop by'" and he just replied with, "well, i mailed it so you should get it soon" Moral of the story: If you tell me to come get something from you, i will go and get it. If you treat me like i shouldn't be coming to you when i get there, i'll leave you a sassy ass yelp review a year later So you'll always remember me. Wonderful!!! By the grace of god, Rob was able to fit me in for a 90 minute course last week along with helping me set up my DMV appointment. Not only did I become way more comfortable driving behind the wheel but I was also able to do a faux driving test yesterday that helped me prepare for the real thing. Rob was honest about how I did and what I needed to improve on in order to pass my test which I really appreciated. Today, I was able to use the Surfs Up Car for my test which my college self really appreciated. We met up and went over some small things about the car and reminders of what they look for while testing. Rob was with me along the entire way and was very helpful with his insight and calming demeanor. Ended up getting my license and also some good restaurant recommendations out of my experience with Surfs Up!!! I'd like to start by recommending you find driving school elsewhere. Long before soliciting driving school to drive on public roads, I learned to pilot tractors and ATVs on private property so I felt somewhat advantaged as to knowledge of how the car handled, drove, etc. I decided to take lessons with Rob because I had heard some good things about him from friends at school. Turns out that was in reference to the San Luis Obispo Surfs Up, completely unaffiliated if I am correct. Rob, as a driving instructor failed to instruct. What he did manage to accomplish was yell at little errors, miss large ones while he played on his phone, encouraging distracted driving, and show his skills on road rage. His BRIGHT BLUE BUICK is below average size, and the parking tips and tips to stay in your lane only apply to his car due to its minuscule size. It also is extremely loud and does not feel firmly planted on the road. Not confidence inspiring for new drivers. Maybe that's the goal. Make them so nervous that they are so worried about the car that they make mistakes so he can yell. Rob is an amazing storyteller, he tells amazing tales of his lawsuit with the state of California, involvement in Boy Scouts, and political opinions. There is nothing wrong with just tales except for they seem to contradict themselves despite their circular reasoning. Rob also fails to give directions until you are upon or past the intersection. Unfortunate since most of the times he decides to accost you for missing his directions given at an impossible time. One instance, he convinced me to approach a stoplight with speed as to not miss it. It turned yellow as approaching, he waved me on, and it turned red as I rounded the corner. He bravely stomped on the brake in order to stop us in the middle of the intersection. Robs erratic behavior doesn't stop there. On my first lesson, a car pulled out and was driving "too slowly" for his taste, he proceeded to reach over and honk the horn for me. Bold since a measly Honda Accord could probably squash his Buick. After receiving my license, despite Rob's lack of instruction, most-likely due to my parents instruction, I was passed by him on the freeway going at least 85. I hope that his smelly, bright blue Buick isn't noticed by the police because a ticket for a driving instructor would be quite ironic. Another choice of his that puzzles me is his decision to keep both windows open even while on freeway. A/C has been proven to be more efficient than keeping windows open for airflow ... and his works. His use of his cell phone during student lessons is worrying. He takes student time not only to schedule more lessons but also to hold personal calls. Such as scheduling his next concert attendance. The most worrying of Rob's practices is to make students run errands for him. I was asked to do so thrice. I was to take him to the voting office so that he could drop off his ballot, keep in mind, getting there, parking and waiting, and leaving are all on student time. I was also asked to drive him to his house where he proceeded to go inside for 10 minutes, leaving me in the car to wait. Finally, I was to drive to a convenience store where I waited no less than five minutes for him to come out and eat his refreshments in the most loud and distracting manner. His bad behavior does not stop there, but my review does. Please seek driving school elsewhere so that you can be instructed how to drive instead of how to pass a test. read more

If I could give a zero star rating I could. If you want your child to succeed and feel confident and comfortable driving, please don't take your child here. He was my instructor when I was 16 and was an aggressive asshole. He made me cry during a lesson and then belittled me because I was crying. Because of him, I refused to drive until I was 18 because I did not want to have to do another lesson with him again. I've also heard recently that he harasses young girls now, so that's awesome. AGAIN, please put your child through a different driving school if you can; Rob will ruin your teen's confidence in driving. read more

Rob is a professional driving instructor. His business exceeded my expectations. My daughter felt comfortable learning from him as well as accepting his corrections. I would recommend Surfs Up to a close friend. Please disregard the negative views on Yelp and realize where they are coming from. Did not have a good experience with this driving school! I prefer precision driving school over this one

This was my driving school when I was 15. The first couple of lessons were fine. When it came to my last lesson though, he told me that I needed more practice and that I wasn't doing well. I was paying for this all myself and I just couldn't afford to take another lesson so I decided to just take the test anyways. I passed and only got docked like one point so I couldn't understand why he told me I needed more practice. In hindsight and after looking at some of these other reviews, I feel like he said that to try and make more money even though he knew myself and the others did fine. He's also very condescending and I've heard he can be somewhat aggressive with people. Would not recommend. read more

I really thought this would be a convenient school for me since its in town. However it was definitely a waste of my money since he was really unprofessional and was constantly on his phone doing other work instead of paying attention to me. I was super nervous when he would tell me instructions because most of the time they where last minute and when i wouldn't turn it would turn into his making me feel like he was talking to a 5 yr old. I had to switch to a precision school. I highly don't recommend and im shocked i didn't find out people where having bad experiences too until now. I really wish this school met my expectations but unfortunately they're really unprofessional and need to find an assistant. Me & my family have a business of our own and we help each-other out by professionally answering business calls when the other is doing services. I definitely recommend being more respectful to clients and paying more attention to your clients before a crash in your hands happens. 0/10 if it was possible. During the first lesson I took before we had even gotten on the road he would begin talking to me and about every 2 minutes he would abruptly stop talking to check his text messages. He didn't apologize but instead laughed about how his wife was texting him about his dogs birthday. He then took several calls to schedule other appointments. However he didn't take any calls or texts when boasting about how his driving school was the best. When we finally got to the actual driving he was looking down at his phone 80% of the time. I wasn't taught anything really except how to press the gas, break, and how to signal. The only time he talked was to tell me to turn left or right. I was very unhappy with my experience and luckily was paying lesson by lesson. I finished my lessons with precision driving school and was very impressed by how much I was taught in each lesson by comparison to surfs up. read more

I took this driving school over 3 years ago. I still see their stupid car around town and I feel bad for whoever is in there. I never experienced a more miserable 6 hours in my entire life. Make sure you don't do the same thing wrong more than 2 times during a lesson because he will talk to you like you're 5 and completely belittle you. Also don't expect him to tell you where to go until you're right on top of the intersection OR tell you like a mile in advance then get mad when you turn too soon. All he does is play on his phone and eat sunflower seeds with the windows rolled down so the wind is blowing in your face. His car is tiny and cramped and smells like hot dogs and corn chips. At least you get to sit in your driveway for half an hour while he does paperwork and sits on his phone. Then he'll narrate stuff for you for 10 minutes with his stupid voice. Oh yeah and he'll brag about how he worked for the DEA or the FBI or something stupid. Who cares. At the end of the lessons I couldn't get home fast enough. Even if you do one thing wrong he'll get all pissed. Maybe if he wasn't on his phone taking care of personal business, I would know exactly where to turn. This guy sucks. read more

Rob was possibly the worst person to teach my kids to drive. They both hated it. He was on his cell phone the entire time and they felt as though he taught them nothing. No positive feed back ever. He would take my daughter to his house!!! That is sooo inappropriate. She came home angry and in tears every time and she is a tough young lady. My son also had a horrible experience with him. I would not have used him for my son but at the time I was unaware at how miserable my daughter had been. He treated my son like a child and verbally assaulted him when Rob did not feel as though he was ready for his test. Needless to say both of my kids passed their tests the first time and are great drivers no thanks to Rob. He left them feeling less than , they are just kids. He is a horrible example of a teacher. I couldn't have been more pleased with Rob's professionalism and candid critique of my son's driving. Rob was extremely helpful in letting us know the areas and aspects that my son needed to work on prior to his behind the wheel test with DMV. If there were negative stars, I'd give them. I highly recommend you NOT have your son or daughter use Surf's Up Driving School. If you have a sensitive or cautious kid, he is not the guy for your kid. I signed my daughter up to take her driving lessons with Surf's Up. She was pretty upset after the first lesson and I attributed it to her cautious nature in general. After pulling up to our house in tears after her second lesson we knew there was a problem. Luckily, we only paid for one lesson at a time and after two traumatizing lessons in which our daughter was snapped at, talked rudely to, and made to feel like she was stupid, we had her finish her lessons elsewhere. But because he made her feel like an idiot and she lost a lot of confidence from her experience with Rob, she didn't drive for a year after lessons with Rob but finally ended up going to Precision Driving School with Butch to work through her fears. She is now a confident driver thanks to Butch at Precision. She also has friends that have had a similar experience with Rob. One girl he yelled at while getting on the freeway and now, a year and a half later, she is still scared to merge on and off the freeway. Not to mention, he may have your student stop by his house or office during their driving lesson to grab things he needs and he will definitely spend almost the entire lesson on his cell phone handling business dealings and scheduling appointments, not really paying attention to the student. Another friend of my daughter's got yelled at by Rob at a crosswalk with a crossing guard in front of a school. The crossing guard motioned for her to go, but because he was on his cell phone he did not see what the crossing guard told her and he slammed the brake on his side of the car on and yelled at the student. He is literally the most unprofessional driving instructor I have ever encountered and needs to have his business license taken away. read more
