Iron Throne describes itself as Vancouver's destination gym for powerlifting, weightlifting, and…read morestrongman, and I would say they're pretty right! It's a small gym, but it has everything you'd need as a powerlifter (not so much as great for hypertrophy training). The equipment is wonderful. There are four bench/squat rack stations, dumbbells ranging from 3 to 125lbs, plates ranging from 0.5 to 25kg, one rack of pound plates, chalking stations, two platforms, three deadlift platforms with deadlift jacks, and more. See my pictures! I will say, it's an adjustment going from pounds to kilograms but you get used to it! There are also so many bar clips! Basically more than enough for every station. There's a really great speaker system where you can play music off their tablet or through your phone's Bluetooth. Choosing music is on a first come, first served basis though. Unless you ask around or are doing a personal record attempt. They recently put in a snack machine to replace their fridge--filled with very affordable snacks, protein snacks, and drinks. There are cubbies to put your bags/jackets. There are two washrooms, both toilets equipped with bidets! They also provide feminine products, a weight scale machine, and air freshener. Becoming a member was simple--I bought my membership on their website and then someone contacted me to get my key card set up. I only wanted to go to the gym at 5am, which was still no problem. They are able to set you up to open the gym door with your phone, and then you can pick up your key card at the office desk. The key card is a white credit card-sized card with a sticker label of the gym logo and your name. The gym is 24/7 so you can fit a session in at anytime in your daily schedule. At 5am, the gym is pretty empty. I went once at a peak-ish time and it was pretty full. You may have to wait for someone to finish before you can start your set. Some people also play music way too loud for my liking--bring noise cancelling buds/headphones! The gym has no AC for the summer but there are two large garage doors you can open with large industrial fans. The biggest con to this gym is the price. Paying for one year at this gym is equivalent to paying for about 2.5 years at Fitness World. They also don't grandfather your original pay rate. If the price goes up, it goes up for everyone. But I'm lucky to have such a great local gym in Surrey!

I have a Canada-wide membership and been to GoodLife locations in Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton &…read moreWinnipeg...but I live closest to this location so it sees me the most often. First the good: Like all GoodLifes, it has a very good selection of cardio machines and a pretty good selection of plate-loaded/selectorized machines. The gear is all kept in good shape, and faulty equipment is usually repaired within a few days. There are two full dumbbell racks, three power cages, stretching areas, a group class room, spin class room, nice change rooms and showers etc. Lots of parking outside. The not-so-good: Crowded and smelly - especially the free weight area. Quite a few metal-heads and juicers - but not as bad as some other gyms in town. It's almost impossible to get a weight bench between 6pm and 10pm most evenings. Waiting lines are common for the more popular machines like the single pec/deltoid deck. Users rarely ever re-rack their weights, leaving them for you to stumble over or search for. The floor space isn't efficiently allocated for this location - as mentioned, the free weight area is always crowded, but the huge cardio area is never at more than 50% capacity, and I've never, ever seen anyone use a spin bike in the adjacent spin class room. The spin area and part of the cardio area should be repurposed with more benches, free weights and plate-loaded machines. This would help balance out the usage in the club. Signs reminding members to re-rack their weights would also be a very good idea. UPDATE : February 2017 Had to knock a star off. The gym had a large room where fitness classes were held, but it was very underutilized. Rarely more than five or six people in there at any given time. This room has been converted into a women's only gym... and is now used even less than before. I'm sitting in the co-ed gym right now and there are 4 women in here but only one in the women's only gym - which seems typical on my visits. This wouldn't be an issue except that management moved ALL the Hoist machines into the women's side, making them inaccessible to male patrons and screwing up many a workout. Unsurprisingly attendance at the gym seems down significantly. I know that I've been forced to go to GoodLife's Burnaby location and other gyms to get access to a full range machines. Management here had a chance to to improve the Surrey location per my original criticisms, but instead they've found a way to make it worse. Unbelievable.

I didn't hate the gym until I noticed how no one wipes down their equipment! I approached the…read morepeople at the front desk on numerous occasions advising them of this and they said "they are well aware of the issue" but "there's nothing they can do!" Of course there are things they can do. It is simply DISGUSTING!!! I havent seen any signs asking people to clean their machines and the cleaning staff never does it either! It smells horrendous in there and the gym is obviously unsanitary. I'm regretting signing a contract with this gym solely due to their lack of hygiene.
