Compare to the available Japanese restaurants in Toronto, It seems (at least from yelp) that Ottawa doesn't have a good collection of them (many places only got 3 stars or less). But this place is an exception. My husband and I went there for dinner and we were glad for our decision. We ordered the mega sushi combo and one of the daily specials (just enough for two of us). If you have been to japan and you know good sushi, avoid this place. Hamachi looked old, and the sushi rice has no flavor at all. Edamame was microwaved and over cooked mush. I wouldn't come back even if it was free. Oh I forgot, even the tempura flakes were stale?!? read more

The wife wanted to try a new sushi place tonight so we found this place on Yelp. When we originally got here, it was about 7.00pm and the place wasn't too busy. To top it off, the place is pretty small. That made us a bit worried (thought this place was supposed to be good!?). However, by 7.30, every table was taken! Word of advice - get hungry early in the evening for faster service. : ) We had a variety of rolls and the miso soup. The soup was pretty good (pretty hard to mess up miso). The rolls were mostly good, except for the California Roll. Personally, I like to bite rolls in half so that I can savor them longer - I also don't like stuffing my face with a giant piece of food. For some reason, the California Roll wasn't "slice-able" with my teeth, so I had to eat an entire piece each time. The other rolls though (from their Specialty selection) didn't have this problem though. I'm wondering if they just pre-make the CA rolls ahead of time, which is why mine was a bit tougher to chew than their special rolls? Regardless, next time I'll be sticking to the special rolls - delicious! read more

This sushi place is always my go to when looking for a quick bite of sushi. Their ingredients are fresh.

Sushi in Ontario, except at the most upscale of places, is always going to be inferior to the coasts, but this place is better than most. I ate here in the past couple of months once with a friend and again by myself. Their mixed nigiri are big (this seems to be a trend that has caught on in the past few years). The sashimi was surprisingly fresh, and as a huge eel nigiri fan their unagi special was irresistible. I wish more places offered it! It's rather pricey -- a generous plate of sashimi (loved the smoked tuna and scallop!) with miso and a nice wakame (seaweed salad in light vinaigrette) came to nearly $38.00 with taxes and tip. read more

Decided on this place based on Yelp reviews, pics and overall value of sushi in the city. The restaurant is cozy, but not cramped. It was packed when we arrived at 8pm and stayed full until 10pm. Service was a little on the slow side, but I think that's just because we showed up when everyone else did. Service was quite friendly as were the chefs. The sushi we ordered was worth the wait, especially the uni. I think this place is great value for the money. I will be returning. read more

We visited this restaurant because it was on Yelp's list of top sushi restaurants in Ottawa. We weren't disappointed. Mind you, Ottawa is certainly not known for its sushi. While Sushi 88 doesn't quite match up to places in Vancouver or Toronto, it is pretty great for Ottawa. The selection wasn't fantastic, nor was the service (it took over an hour to be served, but they were very busy and the server was very friendly and courteous). However, the sushi was excellent. The fish was fresh and tasty, as was the rice. I will be back! read more

Very nice date-friendly decor. Service was okay, if a touch amateurish. Sushi was alright I guess, not terrible, not phenomenal. Tea was good, and free. Some of the menu items don't match what's actually delivered. e.g.: The "Rock Star" says 18 pcs on the menu but it's actually 11 pcs. Nice spot for a date as long as your companion is not a sushi aficionado. Or perhaps stick to maki rolls which are less fish-centred. read more

They have only 11 tables, so you may want to make reservations. I had the red dragon roll which was amazing! Their menu had a section for first timers (those who might want cooked sushi). They had one server the night I went, she was able to serve all 11 tables and taking payments for the several pick up orders as well as being polite and efficient. read more

Their sushi rolls and sashimi are really good by Ottawa standard. Their special square rolls have more rice than anything else though, so I would stay away from those. Also, if you are asian and do not know the owner, go with your white friends if you want even a hint of service. Consider yourself warned. read more

This is a regular take out spot, I can recommend the rock and roll combo, take out is fast, cost is reasonable, always tastes fresh. Rolls come with plenty of roe, Miso soup is occasionally way salty. read more

I'm surprised this place would get such high rating. Rude, rough and unrefined service. Dishes banging. Not a Japanese-owned or operated restaurant. Expect the salad to be flooded in ginger dressing, this is not a place where Japanese balance is to be sought or obtained. Miso soup is very salty. Perfect for those who like their McFood. I can tell Chinese sushi chef is not big on cleanliness. One member of our party ordered salmon rolls and cucumber rolls. He must have made the salmon rolls first and not clean his area. Cucumber rolls had little pieces of salmon on it. Sushi rice is ok, but certainly not high quality. Overall, this ranks slightly higher than what you can get at Farm Boy. You'd think that in 2019 we could get better in a city of one million people. I mean this is ok, what you would find a no-name establishment in Markham or Scarborough. But why the high ratings? Fresh sushi made at the front of the restaurant so you know it's fresh. It's on average about 15$ a person. Price is very good considering the quality of the food. It's amazingly good an would recommend this place to anybody that loves sushi! A++ read more

Highly recommended. If you are familiar with those all you can eat sushi buffet in Ottawa, Sushi 88 provides a way better food. A lot people think it's a little bit pricy, that's because they don't use cheap ingredients. The flavor of the sushi rice was amazingly delicious. It is not our everyday restaurant, but whenever we feel like to have good sushi we love to go to sushi 88. read more

First visit: 01-Mar-2008 Copied from restaurantthing.ca We went here for the first time because it was close to So Good Chinese restaurant, but we didn't feel like eating Chinese again. The sushi was extremely fresh - the rice was great, the seaweed tender and the avocado was melt-in-your-mouth. We're both vegetarian so we can't comment on how the fish tasted, but the Farmer's Platter was definitely great. The tempura was crispy and excellent. The miso soup was probably the best i've had anywhere, and I ate a LOT of japanese food back in Toronto. The only real drawback was that it was slightly more expensive than many of the places I used to frequent in Toronto, [vegetarian dishes start at $10.95 here, usually $8.95 in the Annex] but the quality was definitely above and beyond. Service was fast and friendly too. I'll definitely be going back because it's so close by! read more

Three of us dined there on a Saturday night. It was not busy when we arrived but steadily filled up while we were there. Between the tree of us we had sushi, Tempura, and sushi on rice, and all dishes were excellent. (5 stars for the food). Service was a different matter. Service was typical including the removal of dishes as they were finished - and that was the last we saw of her. No chance for another beverage or even dessert ... we sat a good 30 to 40 minutes talking before we had to ask another server for the bill. read more

Our go-to sushi restaurant in Ottawa. On some nights, they offer brown rice as an option, which we enjoy. Service is fast (but not rushing you in any way), and very friendly. Price is ok...not the cheapest in town, but much better than average for the price. Maybe not enough options for sushi/sashimi combos, but that's a small point. read more

The line was out the door when I last went to Sushi 88 for their lunch special. Lovely setting and Decor but a shame that it only had several booths but it allowed for a nice intimate atmosphere. It is a small location in a great spot near the Chinatown arch, first on your left. The food was fresh and served promptly with quality ingredients. The light sushi option includes soup and salad and is relatively inexpensive at under ten dollars. Other menu options are a bit pricier however the quality is what you pay for without any disappointment. Other non-buffet locations in Ottawa are well within the price range but no where near the quality here. Be warned though, there could be a line between 1130-230 for the lunch special but you'll get in. Service is nothing less than exceptional with attentive, polite and courteous staff that are willing to answer questions or accommodate for substitutions. I plan to revisit this quaint spot now that its safe to say that spring has arrived. The salmon I highly recommend. read more
