If you need a change from the local food here in Portugal sushi is always good this place on key

Billed as 'the best sushi in town,' I just had to try Avenida SushiCafe for lunch with a friend when out and about in Lisbon recently. We were both hungry and wanted to eat and talk, so sharing a bunch of dishes felt like the ideal way to do this. The starters were chosen with the expert help of our waiter, who was helpful from start to finish. We went for the Himalayan salt rock sashimi of fatty tuna with carameliza onion, kabi wasabi and passion fruit and the Hammachi sashimi with wakame salad, pesto vinaigrette and black salt. We could tell that we were in safe hands with the quality of the food and the skill of the chef. For main course, we decided that a trio of fabulous dishes was going to be right for our appetite. The Otsukuri - a combination of osyters, tuna, salmon, cuttlefish and shrimp on ice - was a delight. Such a clever dish. This went well with the tuna gunkan with foie gras and caramelized purple onion and both of us loved every mouthful. Then it wouldn't have been complete without the Wagyu tataki with truffle and shimeji tempura. There was still room for dessert and we couldn't choose just one, so decided that both ice cream sundae with miso caramel, oreo crumble and waffle biscuit AND pumpkin pie and cinnamon cheesecake with crispy pumpkin seeds were going to do it for us. This modern and stylish restaurant never failed to live up to the hype. The food was as trendy as the décor and we had a great time.

The place is very nice comfortable and great design. The menus are in Portuguese and English only. May be adding one in Spanish would be a good idea. The hostess was very rude and sarcastic. The waitresses were just ok. The food is great. If you can pass the staff in the front then everything else is good

    Wonderful sushi tonight

I could not believe how great this spot was from decor to service to the food. Walking in it is absolutely beautiful, we chose a table, got a couple drinks that were all good from sake to a spicy margarita. Then we ordered what felt like a silly amount of food, but we were hungry. The waiter somehow remembered it all without writingit down and then coursed it perfectly. We started with the Otoro tartare and that was just about as splendid as anything comes. Then we followed that up with sashimi and just course and course of nigiri and sushi rolls. Every piece was epically amazing and every drink we had was stellar. I must say you cannot have too much otoro here! The otoro just blew our mind from a price and taste perspective. The dessert also was just so good - we had this matcha cake that again was warm and perfectly prepared. I couldn't believe how good it was. I don't know how they're pulling this off, but Nomada is the place to eat in Lisbon!

We ordered the: -Octopus Hot Dog (of course!) -Roasted Sardine Niguiri -Pan Sear Prawns and Garlic -Tuna tartare on toasted brioche with white chocolate and lime -Fried Seabass -Lobster Roll -Fried Scallops Overall everything was pretty good, but I wasn't in love with everything. The one stand out dish was definitely the Fried Seabass. It was really good! Sadly the Octopus Hot Dog was a bit underwhelming as I kept getting some hard pieces with every bite. The service was very friendly and quick. So although I most likely won't be coming back, I'm glad I tried Sea Me. Croacker Ceviche

There is one private booth table which we selected. It is a tapas style restaurant, so for two of us we ordered 6 dishes plus a dessert. The staff explains the menu and that a lower section shows larger dishes. We loved everything that we ordered but especially the lobster roll (their take don't expect a Maine style roll), sardine nigiri, garlic shrimp (the sauce was incredible and came with bread) and the dessert. The food came out very quickly but we were having dinner at 7pm. The total for two people was around 80 euro with the discount, but we did not get drinks other than still water.

There were some pretty glowing reviews on TripAdvisor and Google so I figured it must be decent. I've been to a lot of sushi places (high end, low end, authentic, all you can eat, etc) and the value just isn't worth it here. $60 Euro for 1 person and this is billed as authentic sushi (which it is definitely NOT). Service is good and the setting/atmosphere is swanky, but for that much you can feed 4 or 5 people at a variety of authentic Portuguese restaurants around town. In terms of food: Miso soup (1/5) - was WAY too salty and everything in the soup was too hard. Salmon nigiri (3/5) - was good, but nothing to write home about. Toro roll (3/5) - this roll is made with toro on top and real crab in the middle and would have been been good except there was some additional fish in it that was super hard to chew through. As it was supposed to be a toro roll, it's supposed to melt in your mouth. Shrimp tempura (1/5) - the tempura was just plain bad. The batter was not light and flaky and tasted spongy in places. I make better shrimp tempura at home. Bottom line, there are so many other good restaurants in Lisbon, do yourself a favor and skip this place.

Timeout in general though is a must see in general for any Lisbon bucket list, so stop by and decide whether or not you want sushi! It has really good sushi, and there's a lot of variety on the menu. I figured that if you're in Portugal, you need to get seafood in any variety, including sushi. The sushi was very good and very fresh. For the price it was also reasonable because it's cheap cheaper than what you could get in the US. My only complaint is I wish the menu was easier to understand. I am not a sushi expert, so there were different names of rolls that I didn't understand like Fotu Maki. It was fine though, because the waiter explained to me what each term meant and what was on the menu, but it would've been helpful to have that listed. You can sit anywhere inside the timeout market.
